Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida thinks Sony and Nintendo should keep the PS5 and Switch 2 generations going for as long as possible. His reasoning is straightforward: console components have become more expensive, players have finite budgets, and he sees little urgent demand from players or developers for more powerful hardware. These are Yoshida’s views, not an announcement about either company’s future consoles.
Why does Yoshida think the current generation should last?
In a Vergecast interview published in late September 2026, Yoshida linked the prospect of later next-generation launches to rising hardware costs and affordability. He said: “people have finite you know budget” and that components specific to PCs and consoles “have increased the price.” He believes owners with systems that already meet their needs may not be eager to replace them.
Yoshida also argued that there is no broad demand for a leap in power. As reported by Nintendo Life, he said: “I don’t think lots of people are asking for ‘more power, we need more power’. Or even developers, I don’t think developers are asking ‘we need better hardware’.” He expects that to help Sony and Nintendo’s current generations “do pretty well for many years to come, still.”
That argument rests partly on Yoshida’s assessment that people are happy with PS5 and Switch 2. It is an opinion, not a reported satisfaction survey or a measured finding about all owners. His broader point is that a console generation can remain viable while its hardware still runs the games people want and a more powerful successor is not compelling enough to justify its cost.

Is Sony or Nintendo delaying its next console?
No delay was announced. Yoshida was offering an outside view as a former PlayStation executive, not describing a confirmed Sony or Nintendo roadmap. His comments suggest that higher costs could give the companies a reason to push back new launches; they do not establish that a PS6 or a future Nintendo console has been cancelled, delayed, or scheduled for a particular date.
The distinction matters: a plausible economic incentive is not the same as a company decision. Yoshida’s comments do not include a launch window, a cost estimate, or a specific component-price increase.

How does Xbox fit into his comparison?
Yoshida described Xbox as pursuing a different course, trying to change the competitive landscape through new hardware and business models. In his view, that makes Xbox’s next move especially consequential, while Sony and Nintendo can continue with their current generations. This is his strategic comparison, not confirmation of any company’s unreleased plans.

If your current console plays the games you want and performs well enough for you, Yoshida’s argument supports waiting rather than upgrading simply because a successor might arrive. Rising hardware costs and the finite budgets he describes could make a future console a significant purchase, while a new generation is not automatically necessary for every player.

- Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
- PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.
- Maximize your play sessions with near-instant load times for installed PS5 games.
- 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
- Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.
Waiting is less attractive if your current system cannot run the games you want, or if a specific feature or performance improvement matters enough to justify replacing it. Yoshida’s view is about the value of extending a generation; it cannot tell an individual player whether their own console is sufficient.
