Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →“This application failed to start because sidechainer.dll was not found.” The sidechainer.dll error usually means a DAW or older project cannot find the TC Works SideChainer VST plug-in, not that Windows has lost a system file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what happened:
- The error appeared after reinstalling a DAW, moving VST folders, or removing old audio software: reinstall the matching TC Works Native Bundle or PowerCore software.
- The file disappeared after an antivirus alert: check Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The file exists, but the DAW says it cannot load it: check the VST folder, plug-in scan log, dependencies, and 32-bit compatibility.
- The DAW is 64-bit: confirm that it supports 32-bit VST plug-ins through bridging.
sidechainer.dllis identified in public file metadata as a Win32/32-bit plug-in. - The problem began after a Windows update, driver change, or installation: try System Restore after confirming the plug-in installation is intact.
- Only one old project needs SideChainer: open a copy of the project and consider bypassing or replacing the effect if the plug-in cannot run on modern Windows.
Do not begin by downloading sidechainer.dll from a random DLL site or copying it into C:WindowsSystem32. That can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual TC Works installation and its dependencies broken.
What sidechainer.dll is
sidechainer.dll is associated with TC Works SideChainer, an old audio effect plug-in used with TC Works software. SideChainer was designed as a companion plug-in for sending a control signal to a compressor for ducking and sidechain processing.
It is not:
- A Windows component
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A hardware driver by itself
- A normal COM or ActiveX DLL that must be registered with Windows
- A file that should normally be placed in
System32orSysWOW64
It is a VST plug-in component. Historical TC Works Native Bundle packages included SideChainer alongside other audio effects, and PowerCore-era software also included a native SideChainer plug-in.
#1 Best Overall
- Desktop controlled plug-in brings classic TC reverb sound to your DAW
- Dedicated desktop interface with intuitive hands-on control
- Huge reverb variety to perfectly suit diverse musical needs - everything from vocals to drums
- Preserves natural characteristics of original source
- Includes custom-built signature presets from your favorite artists
Public third-party metadata identifies one sidechainer.dll record as Win32/32-bit, with a historical version and file size. That information is not a current TC file manifest, so use it only as a rough identification clue. Do not reject a genuine installation solely because its exact metadata differs.
Error messages you may see
The wording depends on Windows, the DAW, and the plug-in scanner. Possible messages include:
- “This application failed to start because sidechainer.dll was not found.”
- “The file sidechainer.dll is missing or corrupted.”
- “A required component is missing: sidechainer.dll.”
- “Error loading sidechainer.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because sidechainer.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Failed to load sidechainer.dll.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency required by the plug-in.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete TC Works package
This is the most likely fix. Restore the original application instead of replacing one DLL.
The matching software may be:
- TC Works Native Bundle
- A PowerCore software installation
- A legacy project or DAW setup that used TC Works VST effects
Find the old plug-in location
- Open the DAW that reports the error.
- Open its plug-in settings or plug-in manager.
- Note every VST folder it scans.
- In File Explorer, search your old backups, installation media, and previous computer for
sidechainer.dll. - Record the folder containing the verified copy. Do not copy it yet if it came from an unknown source.
Common VST locations vary by installation. The important point is to use the folder configured in the DAW, not a Windows system folder.
Reinstall from trusted media
- Locate the original TC Works Native Bundle or PowerCore installer.
- If you used PowerCore, use the archived TC Electronic PowerCore software package that matches the old installation where possible.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if that option is offered. Otherwise reinstall the plug-in components.
- Select the VST plug-in destination used by your DAW.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open the DAW and rescan the VST folder.
The archived PowerCore software was supplied in separate 32-bit and 64-bit Windows installers and officially covered older Windows releases, including Windows Vista and Windows 7. TC Electronic also states that PowerCore development has ceased. Do not assume that an archived installer is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Confirm the result
The repair worked if:
sidechainer.dllis restored to the intended VST directory.- The DAW’s plug-in scan completes without a SideChainer error.
- SideChainer appears in the effects list.
- The affected project opens without asking for the missing plug-in.
If the installer completes but the DAW still cannot see SideChainer, the plug-in was probably installed into a different VST folder. Return to the DAW’s plug-in path settings and add the folder containing the restored file, then rescan.
Fix 2: Check 32-bit VST compatibility
Restoring the file does not make a 32-bit plug-in compatible with every 64-bit host.

Check the DAW architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System and then About.
- Check the Windows system type. This does not necessarily tell you whether the DAW itself is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open the DAW’s Help, About, or installation information screen.
- Check whether the DAW is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Open the DAW’s plug-in manager and look for a setting related to bridging, legacy plug-ins, or plug-in sandboxing.
A 64-bit DAW may need a reputable 32-bit VST bridge. If it has no bridging support, use a compatible 32-bit host for the old project or replace the effect with a current plug-in.
Do not assume that a separate native 64-bit sidechainer.dll exists. The available identification for this file describes it as Win32/32-bit.
Check the host and plug-in together
If SideChainer loads in one DAW but not another:
- Compare the VST folders used by both programs.
- Check whether the working DAW is 32-bit.
- Compare plug-in bridging and sandbox settings.
- Review the failing DAW’s scan log.
- Temporarily move duplicate copies of
sidechainer.dllout of extra VST folders, keeping only the verified installation. - Rescan the intended folder.
If the project depends on SideChainer and cannot load it, make a copy of the project before bypassing the effect. A replacement plug-in may reproduce the general sidechain function, but it will not necessarily reproduce the original settings.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may remove or quarantine an old plug-in. A quarantine event is not proof that the file is safe or malicious, so verify its source first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
sidechainer.dllor the TC Works installation. - Expand the detection to view its path and action.
- If the file came from the original installer or a verified backup, scan that source and confirm its integrity.
- Only then select the available Restore action.
- Reinstall the complete TC package if restoration is unavailable or the file is still missing.
- Run another scan before opening the DAW.
Microsoft warns that Defender may detect a restored file again. Do not create a broad exclusion for an unverified DLL. If the file came from an unknown download, delete it and obtain the plug-in from original installation media or a trusted archived TC package instead.
Fix 4: Check dependencies and the DAW scan log
A present file can still fail to load because another module is missing or incompatible.
- Open the DAW’s plug-in manager.
- Start a full rescan, if available.
- Read the scan result for SideChainer.
- Look for wording about a missing module, unsupported architecture, blocked plug-in, failed validation, or a crash during scanning.
- Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and opening Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the failed scan.
- Reinstall the complete Native Bundle or PowerCore package rather than copying individual supporting files.
Do not download individual runtime DLLs to satisfy an unexplained dependency. The complete installer is more likely to place related files, registry data, licensing components, and plug-in files correctly.
Fix 5: Check PowerCore hardware and legacy licensing
Some PowerCore-era installations depended on the PowerCore environment, including its hardware, software, or licensing requirements.

If SideChainer was installed as part of PowerCore:
- Shut down the DAW.
- Confirm that the PowerCore software package was installed completely.
- Reconnect the required PowerCore hardware if the project depends on it.
- Check whether the legacy driver or licensing software is present.
- Start the DAW only after the hardware and software are detected.
- Rescan the VST folder.
A copied sidechainer.dll cannot recreate missing PowerCore software, hardware support, or licensing components. The PowerCore manual and release notes describe these legacy requirements and document historical SideChainer fixes.
Fix 6: Restore the correct VST path
A plug-in can appear missing simply because the DAW stopped scanning its original folder.
- Open the DAW.
- Go to Preferences, Settings, or Plug-in Manager.
- Find VST, VST2, or Plug-in Locations.
- Add the folder where the TC installer placed
sidechainer.dll. - Save the settings.
- Choose Rescan, Rescan failed plug-ins, or the equivalent command.
- Restart the DAW.
- Test SideChainer in a blank project before opening the affected project.
Avoid placing several copies in different folders. Duplicate legacy plug-ins can cause the DAW to load the wrong copy or produce inconsistent scan results.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as the first repair
A VST plug-in is normally discovered by the audio host from its plug-in directory. It is not normally registered as a COM component.
Recommended Free Tools
Running this command is therefore usually irrelevant:
regsvr32 sidechainer.dll
Microsoft documents regsvr32 for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A VST plug-in may not provide that entry point. If you run the command, Windows may report that the specified module or entry point could not be found. That does not repair the VST installation.
Use the TC installer and the DAW’s plug-in scanner instead.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They normally will not reconstruct a missing third-party VST plug-in.

Use them when other Windows features are also failing, not as the primary SideChainer repair.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Rescan the VST folder in the DAW.
Success means DISM or SFC reports that Windows component corruption was repaired or that no integrity violations were found. If the commands report errors, copy the exact result and repair Windows separately. Reinstalling TC Works remains the definitive fix for a missing SideChainer file.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair offers a free scan that shows what it identifies, while repair features are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling TC Works remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

- Reinstall or repair the TC Works package if the DLL is still missing.
System Restore does not replace personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, or updates installed after the selected restore point. Use it only after confirming that the restore point is relevant.
Fix 10: Update or reinstall related audio drivers
Drivers are not the usual cause of a missing sidechainer.dll, but they can affect a legacy DAW, audio interface, or PowerCore installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Properties and open the Driver tab.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update driver only with a driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer.
- If the device stopped working after an update, check Roll Back Driver.
- Restart Windows and test the DAW.
Do not replace the plug-in DLL simply because an audio driver is outdated. A driver repair may restore audio hardware access, but it will not recreate SideChainer.
Finding the correct legacy audio driver can mean comparing hardware models and Windows compatibility manually. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing detected driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the hardware manufacturer remains the safest source for a PowerCore or audio-interface driver.

If SideChainer still will not run
At this point, the likely problem is compatibility rather than a missing file.
The archived PowerCore software officially targeted older Windows versions, and PowerCore development ceased. There is no current vendor confirmation that this legacy plug-in is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Try the following:
- Preserve the original project and presets.
- Test the plug-in in a separate 32-bit DAW or compatible legacy environment.
- Disable SideChainer in a copy of the project.
- Replace it with a current sidechain-capable effect if the project allows it.
- Render or freeze affected tracks on a system where the original plug-in still works.
- Keep the old installation media and verified plug-in files for future project recovery.
If the project opens when SideChainer is bypassed, Windows and the DAW are probably functioning and the remaining issue is the legacy plug-in environment.
Prevention
- Keep a backup of the original TC Works or PowerCore installer.
- Record the DAW’s VST folder before changing its settings.
- Keep project files, presets, and rendered tracks together.
- Do not delete old VST folders until legacy projects have been tested.
- Quarantine unknown copies instead of overwriting a verified installation.
- Avoid placing third-party audio plug-ins in Windows system directories.
- Keep a compatible 32-bit host available for old projects that require it.
FAQ
Is sidechainer.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an old third-party VST plug-in associated with TC Works SideChainer.
Which program installed it?
It may have been installed with the TC Works Native Bundle or with PowerCore-era software. The exact package depends on the original audio setup.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Restore it to the VST folder used by the DAW through the original installer or a verified backup.
Will regsvr32 fix it?
Usually not. VST plug-ins are normally scanned from their plug-in directory rather than registered as Windows components.
Why does the file exist but still fail to load?
The DAW may be 64-bit while the plug-in is 32-bit, the VST path may be wrong, or a dependency, PowerCore component, driver, or licensing requirement may be missing.
Is there a 64-bit version?
Available public identification describes sidechainer.dll as Win32/32-bit. Do not assume that a native 64-bit version exists.
Can SFC restore this file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not third-party VST plug-ins.
What is the safest source?
Use the original TC Works or PowerCore installer, verified installation media, or a verified backup from the same setup. Avoid random DLL download sites.
What if I only need to open one old project?
Work on a copy, try a compatible 32-bit host or bridge, and consider bypassing or replacing SideChainer. Preserve the original project and presets before making changes.
