The result, according to critics, is strongest when its oppressive mood and unfolding mystery make you want to retrace your steps; its boss fights may be less convincing. The game is listed for release on October 8, 2026, so this is a review of the available pre-release assessments—not a verdict on launch performance or player response.
What is Silver Pines about?
You play private investigator Red Walker, who arrives in the half-abandoned town of Silver Pines to find Eddie Velvet, a missing musician. The search opens onto the town’s darker history and a situation that grows increasingly nightmarish. Shops, apartment buildings and sewers form the central exploration space, where clues and puzzles gradually lead farther into the mystery. The official description and The Guardian’s review frame the appeal around that investigation as much as the horror.
Is Silver Pines a Metroidvania or a survival-horror game?
It is both, with the two labels describing different parts of its design. Survival horror governs how you handle danger and supplies; Metroidvania structure governs how you move through the town. The official store listing describes combat or evasion, scavenging, puzzles, limited inventory, and tools and weapons that open access to previously unreachable areas. That means returning to an old location with a newly acquired item is part of the intended loop, not simply retracing ground for its own sake. Steam’s feature description lays out that blend.
Exploration and tools
GamesRadar+ describes a dense map that rewards revisiting earlier locations. Tools can have overlapping uses: in that reviewer’s account, the crowbar can pull down wooden panels and serve as a melee weapon, but it takes more inventory space than a box cutter. Item combinations, storage boxes and weapon upgrades that reduce an item’s footprint add further inventory decisions. A camera feature lets Walker record points of interest. These details are the reviewer’s observations, rather than independently verified mechanics.
#1 Best Overall
The design’s central trade-off is clear: carrying an item that could solve a future obstacle may mean sacrificing room for healing supplies or weapons. That makes route planning and remembering locked doors part of the puzzle, while keeping the map’s backtracking connected to survival pressure.
Combat and scarcity
The Guardian describes breakable knives and pistols that need careful reloading because ammunition is limited. The result is a horror game in which fighting is not automatically the best answer; avoiding enemies and preserving supplies can matter as much as winning an encounter. A PC Gamer preview by Fraser Brown, explicitly limited to the first hour of a demo, found the early combat awkward and noted the small inventory and limited resources. That is a bounded preview impression, not a full-game judgment. PC Gamer’s preview is useful for that distinction.

What do the reviews say about the mystery and atmosphere?
GamesRadar+ and The Guardian both emphasize the game’s style, mood and pacing. GamesRadar+ praises its painterly visuals, music and investigative mystery; The Guardian highlights its mythology and the way clues, puzzles and locked-room progression sustain exploration. Together, those strengths suggest that Silver Pines is most compelling when the town itself keeps the investigation moving—each discovery gives a reason to press on or reconsider a place already visited.
GamesRadar+ identifies boss fights as a possible weak point. The Guardian, meanwhile, notes that the game works with familiar adventure conventions. Those observations matter for expectations: the distinctive draw described in these reviews is the combination of atmosphere and investigation, rather than a claim that every combat encounter or progression idea is novel. No numerical review aggregate is established by the individual assessments cited here.
Rank #3
Is Silver Pines like Silent Hill or Resident Evil?
The comparison works as shorthand for a moody horror presentation and survival-horror pressures, not as a claim that Silver Pines belongs to either series. Its supported points of overlap are limited supplies, puzzle-led progression and a mystery in an unsettling place. Its more specific identity is a missing-person investigation layered over gated, revisit-based exploration. If you want a horror game where mapping routes and managing inventory are part of solving the case, the comparison is useful; it should not be read as a promise of the same combat, pacing or storytelling as those franchises.
Platforms, release date and practical details
The PC and PS5 listings give October 8, 2026 as the release date. Steam lists Wych Elm as developer, Team17 as publisher, and single-player play; the PlayStation Store lists a one-player PS5 release at 04:00 UTC on that date. GamesRadar+ lists additional platforms, but the first-party store details cited here verify PC and PS5 only. Confirm availability in the relevant store for other consoles.

Verdict: who should play Silver Pines?
Silver Pines looks most promising for players who enjoy survival horror as an act of investigation: conserve resources, solve environmental puzzles, note blocked routes and return with the right tool. The critics’ strongest praise is for its atmosphere, visual style, pacing and mystery, while the reported concern about boss fights leaves some uncertainty around combat’s high points. With the listed launch still ahead at the time of these assessments, performance and player response remain unjudged.
