To win a board in Mario Party Superstars, finish with the most Stars. Coins help you reach and buy Stars, but spending them wisely—and responding to each board’s hazards and routes—is what keeps your options open. These tactics can improve your decisions, not guarantee a win: dice rolls and events can still change the lead.

How to make better decisions on any board

  • Keep the goal in view. Nintendo’s board tips put it plainly: “Whoever collects the most Stars by the end, wins!” Treat coins as a resource for pursuing that goal, rather than a score to hoard automatically. Nintendo’s classic-board tips explain the signature mechanics on all five boards.
  • Check what a move costs—and what it commits you to. Some choices spend coins now, while others affect where later players can travel or what route is available. Consider the future consequence before committing.
  • Reassess as the board changes. A counter, time-of-day shift, toll or sign change can make yesterday’s plan a poor choice. Look at the current state before moving.

Nintendo’s product listing describes five classic boards and 100 classic minigames, all played with button controls. Those are game features, not evidence that any particular strategy has a measured win-rate advantage. Nintendo’s product page lists Joy-Con, a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and Nintendo Switch Lite as control options; a Pro Controller is not required for these tactics.

What to do on each board

Space Land: get clear of the Bowser Coin Beam

Watch the Bowser Coin Beam counter as you plan your movement. When it reaches 1, look for a route out of the beam’s line of fire. A hit costs you all your coins, so protecting your balance can matter more than taking the most direct-looking path. Which route is safest depends on where you are; check your position rather than assuming one route is always the escape.

Peach’s Birthday Cake: weigh planting against keeping your coins

At Event Spaces marked with an exclamation point, strawberry planting can turn coins into a threat for later visitors. A large strawberry costs 30 coins; a smaller one costs 5. They grow into Piranha Plants that can take coins or Stars from other players who land within their reach.

Nintendo Mario Party Superstars: Standard - Switch [Digital Code]
  • Bring the party on 5 classic boards from the Nintendo 64 Mario Party games
  • Show your friends and family who’s boss in 100 minigames from throughout the Mario Party series
  • All game modes can be played online*
  • Matches with friends in board game mode are saved after each turn both locally** and online*—pick up where you left off
  • Play using a single Joy-Con controller, two Joy-Con with the Joy-Con grip accessory, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, or Nintendo Switch Lite system

Planting is a bet on what may happen later, not a guaranteed return. Before spending, consider whether keeping those coins available better serves your own Star plans. The plant’s potential payoff depends on another player reaching it.

Horror Land: time your approach to King Boo

The King Boo statue’s effect depends on the board’s day-and-night state. During the day it is harmless; at night, passing the statue with enough coins lets King Boo swipe Stars from unsuspecting opponents. Check both the time and your coin balance before aiming for the interaction. Nintendo does not state an exact coin threshold, so do not plan around an assumed number.

Nintendo Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo Switch) (European Version)
  • Mario Party is back with five classic boards from the Nintendo 64 Mario Party games. Frosting meets flowers as you race to get the most stars (and sabotage your opponents) on the Peach’s Birthday Cake board from the original Mario Party game. Or watch the countdown that unleashes Bowser Coin Beam and hold onto those coins on the Space Land board. The tides can turn quickly in Mario Party, so stay vigilant, partygoers. This and all other modes can be played online, too!
  • Try your hand at a Superstar collection of minigames from throughout the Mario Party series. Whether you are saving up coins for stars in board game mode or practising in free play, there is nothing quite like being the last one standing in Mushroom Mix-Up or Shy Guy Says. All minigames are played with button controls, so you can stick to the Joy-Con controller or bust out the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller or a Nintendo Switch Lite.
  • Bring the party anytime, anywhere with same-system, local wireless, or online play. Matches with friends in board game mode save each turn, so feel free to take a break and pick up where you left off. Use stickers to praise or pester fellow players as you race across the board collecting stars. All modes support online multiplayer, so you can hop in with friends for a few minigames or a marathon 30-turn match. Victory is just as sweet (and stealing stars is just as satisfying) from anywhere across the globe.

Yoshi’s Tropical Island: think ahead before raising a toll

The Star requires travel between the board’s two islands, which are joined by bridges guarded by Thwomps. You can raise a bridge toll as much as you like, but you cannot lower it afterward. Before increasing it, consider how the lasting toll could affect future movement—including your own. There is no universally best amount; positions and plans determine whether a higher toll helps.

Woody Woods: check the signs before paying to change them

Signposts determine the direction of travel, and Monty Mole charges coins to change them. The price varies unpredictably. Check where the current signs point, then compare that route with the benefit of paying for a reroute. Spending automatically can waste coins; whether a change is worthwhile depends on where it sends you and what you need next.
