Developed by Steve Gal and published by Pugware, Skautfold: Usurper released on Steam on February 20, 2018. The store describes it as a Metroidvania Action-RPG and the second game in the Skautfold series, following Shrouded in Sanity. The setting is an alternative 1898 London transformed by an otherworldly Citadel and the maddening Fog it releases. The premise sets up a dark, Lovecraftian journey through the Citadel, where the focus is on combat, exploration and character development rather than on prior series knowledge. Steam’s official listing provides the game’s story and feature description.
How the Guard combat system works
Guard is the game’s defining combat idea. According to the official listing, incoming hits consume Guard points before they reduce health. A precisely timed dodge through an attack restores some of the absorbed attack as Guard, so avoiding damage is also a way to replenish the resource that keeps you in the fight. The system rewards timing and risk-taking rather than treating a dodge as only an escape.

A reflective shield offers another defensive option: it can redirect many projectiles, but doing so costs Guard. In practice, the mechanics described by the store page suggest a combat loop built around watching attacks, deciding whether to evade or block, and managing Guard so it does not run out at a critical moment. The listing does not establish how every enemy encounter feels, so treat this as a description of the intended system, not a firsthand assessment.
Exploration, builds and challenge options
A connected Citadel to explore
The Steam description calls the Citadel a massive, interconnected world with shortcuts, varied areas, secrets, additional areas and optional bosses. A 2018 Steam Community reviewer likewise described a connected map, nonlinear exploration and movement unlocks. That individual account is consistent with the store’s Metroidvania framing, but it is one player’s report rather than an independent map survey. Expect exploration that can involve revisiting routes as you gain ways to move through the world.

Build variety, as advertised
Pugware’s Steam listing advertises eight stats that can be reallocated and more than 90 weapons and spells. It names melee weapons, ranged weapons, spells and summons among the available options. These are developer-provided content counts, not independently verified totals. Still, the advertised breadth means the game is pitched around experimenting with character builds rather than committing permanently to a single stat distribution.
Optional ways to raise the stakes
The listing names four challenge conditions: no-Guard, one-hit-point, permadeath and built-in speedrunning modes. They are options for players who want a stricter run or a speed-focused challenge, not requirements for completing the standard experience.

What Steam reviews say—and what they cannot tell you
At the Steam page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, Skautfold: Usurper had 69% positive ratings from 304 all-time user reviews, a rating Steam labels “Mixed.” This is a dated snapshot, not a permanent score; both the percentage and review count can change. It offers a qualified signal rather than a clear consensus that the game is an easy recommendation.
One highly rated Steam Community review from July 19, 2018 praises the Guard mechanic and nonlinear connected map, while also describing a technical problem that made the game unplayable on that reviewer’s setup. The reviewer suggested settings changes, possibly including an INI edit, but was unsure whether the fix would work across computers. That is an anecdotal report from one setup in 2018; it does not establish how common the issue is or whether it persists today. No independent compatibility test is available here. Platforms and compatibility to check before buying
Steam lists the Windows PC version. Metacritic reports versions for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and records June 23, 2023 as an initial release date for the console release; it lists Red Art Games as that release’s publisher. A PlayStation Store product listing is available. Store editions and regional availability can vary, so check the current listing for your platform and region before buying.
Steam’s minimum requirements name Windows XP Service Pack 3, a 1.2 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, DirectX 10 and 2 GB of storage. Those are legacy requirements, not a guarantee that the game will work on present-day Windows systems. Steam also states that its client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024; that client policy does not verify this game’s compatibility with every current computer. If technical certainty matters, check the store and platform details for your specific setup rather than relying on the old minimum OS line.

Who should consider Skautfold: Usurper?
- Consider it if you want a Lovecraftian setting, interconnected Metroidvania exploration and combat built around precise dodges, Guard management and projectile reflection.
- It may suit you if you like experimenting with weapons, spells, summons and stat allocation, or want optional modes that add severe constraints.
- Be cautious if you need a strong, consistent user-review consensus or verified compatibility for your particular hardware. The available rating is Mixed, and the technical concern noted above is anecdotal rather than a confirmed widespread problem.
