Skich began as a way to help mobile players find games; it now aims to distribute them too. Its store combines game recommendations and social discovery with an alternative marketplace, available on iOS in the EU and Android worldwide according to Skich. The change moves Skich from sending players to Apple or Google to handling more of the journey itself—but its reach, catalog and commercial terms still need to be weighed against those established stores.
Skich began as a discovery app, not a store
The original Skich product addressed a familiar problem for mobile gamers: finding a suitable game in crowded app-store catalogs. Rather than presenting only search results and charts, it offered personalized game recommendations in swipeable cards, with screenshots and videos. Players could save games to lists such as “Want” and “Played,” review titles, react to them, and follow friends or other users. Pre-release tracking was another part of the discovery experience. When a player chose a game, Skich directed them to the App Store or Google Play to install it.
That distinction matters. The early app helped a player decide what to download, but Apple or Google still provided the download destination and handled the transaction. Contemporary coverage described Skich as a social discovery layer for mobile games, not an alternative marketplace (TechCrunch, April 2022).
Why discovery was a strategic starting point
A recommendation product can learn what players like through their stated interests, saved games, reviews and activity. Those signals can make recommendations more relevant; relevant recommendations can prompt downloads. If enough players return and engage, the service may become useful to developers as an additional route to an audience—and eventually as a distribution channel that can earn revenue from transactions.

That is the logic behind Skich’s evolution: discovery creates player intent; a store can capture more of the activity that follows. It is also a harder business than adding a new screen. A store needs developers and games to attract players, while developers need a meaningful audience to justify the work of supporting another storefront.
Skich’s early figures offer historical context, not a picture of its current scale. TechCrunch reported that tests involving more than 6,000 users produced 21.5% global first-week retention, and that 55% of testers found a game and proceeded to an app-store download. The same report said 30% followed another user and 29% reviewed games; these were figures reported about the early MVP, not independently established current performance (TechCrunch, April 2022).
In March 2024, GamesBeat reported roughly 100,000 users and about 25% month-over-month organic growth, along with the company’s claims that around 70% of users downloaded at least one recommended game and users were downloading games at five times a prior rate. Those are dated, company-reported figures; they should not be read as current user or conversion metrics. GamesBeat also reported $1 million raised from GEM Capital and a seven-person team at that time (GamesBeat, March 2024).
The EU regulatory change made an iOS store possible
Skich’s move into marketplace distribution depended in part on a change to the rules governing iOS distribution in the European Union. The EU’s Digital Markets Act opened a route for alternative app marketplaces there, under specific platform terms. It did not make third-party iOS stores universally available around the world.

Skich announced its iOS marketplace in March 2025, after an earlier plan to launch a store by the end of 2024. At launch, the company described the store as an EU offering and said it would add titles over time. The announcement marked a move from referring users to other storefronts toward operating a marketplace itself (TechCrunch, March 2025).
Apple’s EU terms include commissions and other possible costs that depend on the applicable terms and circumstances. Apple describes commission rates of 10% or 17%, a possible 3% payment-processing fee, and a possible €0.50 Core Technology Fee for qualifying installs beyond one million first annual installs. These are EU-specific provisions, not a universal comparison rate for every developer or transaction. A developer assessing Skich’s economics needs to consider the applicable Apple terms as well as Skich’s and any payment provider’s terms (Apple’s EU DMA terms).
What Skich Store offers players
Skich describes its current store as available on iOS in Europe and Android worldwide. Those are the company’s stated availability claims; they do not establish worldwide iOS access or guarantee that every device, country or game is supported. The store is focused on mobile games rather than apps across every category.
| Product or platform | What it is | Availability stated by Skich |
|---|---|---|
| Skich Store on iOS | Alternative marketplace for games | EU/Europe; Skich does not establish wider iOS availability |
| Skich Store on Android | Game marketplace, with game-management features | Worldwide, according to Skich |
| Skich web product | Game discovery through Skich’s website | Web access through Skich |
| Older Skich app | Discovery app that may still appear in conventional app stores; it does not include store-purchase features | May appear in Apple’s App Store or Google Play |
Skich’s discovery pitch remains central: personalized suggestions, social activity and curated “Gamelists” are intended to make a game-focused catalog easier to browse than relying on broad charts or keyword search alone. The company advertises more than 200 categories on its developer page and describes 240 genres on its store page. Those are its own product descriptions, and the differing counts are best treated as approximate marketing language rather than a standardized taxonomy (Skich for developers; Skich Store).

For Android users, Skich has also developed a Game Launcher to organize installed games. TechCrunch’s 2023 coverage described sorting by title, playtime, recent use or installation date, viewing playtime, launching and removing games, and adding titles manually when they were not recognized. That report cited a database of about 15,000 games at the time; it is a historical figure, not a current catalog count (TechCrunch, August 2023).
One source of confusion is that the older discovery app and the newer store are distinct products. Skich says its older app may remain listed in Apple’s App Store or Google Play without game-purchase functionality; players looking for the full marketplace need to follow Skich’s Store instructions. The company’s FAQ also says the store is free to users, although individual games may cost money or include in-app purchases. Some transactions may temporarily send users to traditional stores while Skich onboards more developers directly (Skich Store FAQ).
What the alternative means for developers
For a game studio, Skich’s proposition is a bundle: another distribution channel, an audience focused on mobile games, and discovery features intended to connect players with titles beyond the most visible chart positions. Developer profiles can expose a studio’s catalog, while social activity and Gamelists offer additional ways for players to encounter games. Skich says more than half of its users download at least one additional game from a favorite developer’s profile; that is a company claim, not an independently verified conversion rate (Skich for developers).
- Potential upside: an additional route to players, especially for games that benefit from genre-led discovery, social recommendations or browsing a studio’s catalog.
- Potential cost: another submission, quality-assurance, update and reporting workflow, plus work to handle entitlements and player support across storefronts.
- Key uncertainty: the sources available here do not establish Skich’s current active developer count, transaction volume or independently measured player reach.
Skich presents distribution as non-exclusive, so a developer can retain existing storefronts while exploring another channel. That lowers the need to choose one store over another, but it does not remove integration costs or guarantee that the new channel will generate enough users to justify them. Nor does an additional storefront automatically solve user acquisition: players still need a reason to install it.

How Skich’s store makes money—and what remains unclear
TechCrunch reported in March 2025 that Skich planned to charge a 15% commission on purchases made through the store and in-app purchases in games downloaded through it. That figure is useful as a reported snapshot of the launch-era model, not proof of a universal, unchanged rate in 2026 or of a developer’s all-in cost. The available sources do not establish how it combines with payment-provider charges, taxes, refunds or any applicable Apple fees (TechCrunch, March 2025).
In May 2026, Xsolla announced a partnership to act as merchant of record for paid-game sales and in-app purchases distributed through Skich Store. In practical terms, Xsolla says it provides payment processing, tax handling, refunds and compliance infrastructure, with transaction and revenue visibility through its tools. This can spare Skich from building the entire commerce stack itself and can reduce operational barriers for developers, but the announcement does not mean every legal or operational obligation disappears. It also does not state Xsolla’s fee for this arrangement (Xsolla and Skich partnership announcement).
Skich’s consumer FAQ says access to the store is free, while games and in-app purchases may be paid. It also notes that some purchases can still redirect to traditional stores during developer onboarding. That means the experience and transaction route may vary by title; a marketplace listing alone does not establish that every purchase is processed directly by Skich or Xsolla (Skich Store FAQ).
The adoption test is bigger than the storefront
Skich’s differentiator is not simply being another place to install a game. Its case rests on combining recommendation, social discovery, distribution and commerce. A focused interface could help players find titles that generic charts miss, while giving developers an additional way to reach them. But recommendation quality and social features only matter at scale if the catalog is compelling and enough users return to use them.

For players, the trade-off is a potentially more tailored discovery experience against the convenience and familiarity of established stores. The catalog is not established here as comparable in size to Apple’s or Google’s, some purchases may still route elsewhere, and alternative-store installation may involve extra permissions or trust decisions depending on platform and region. On iOS, geography is a decisive limitation: Skich’s stated offering is EU-focused.
For developers, the practical decision is whether Skich can deliver incremental reach worth the integration and support burden. Before committing, studios should obtain current written terms covering commission and payment fees, supported countries and currencies, refunds and chargebacks, SDK and entitlement requirements, update workflows, analytics, and how purchases behave for players who install a game from multiple stores. The public announcements cited here do not settle those commercial and operational details.
Skich has therefore made a meaningful shift in role: from guiding players toward games hosted elsewhere to trying to become a place where they can discover and obtain them. Whether that becomes a durable business depends on the less visible measures—catalog depth, repeat player use, developer participation and clear economics—not just the fact that an alternative store now exists.
