What’s actually slowing this PC down?

On PC, open Skyrim’s console with ~ (or, on some UK keyboard layouts, `), then enter a command and press Enter. Type help in the console for an in-game command list. For item cheats, use player.additem <ItemID> <quantity>; the correct ID matters.
How to open the console
- Load your game on PC and press
~, to the left of1on a US keyboard. Bethesda Support says players using a UK-configured keyboard may need the grave accent key,`, at the top-left instead. Bethesda Support’s console access instructions. - Type a command into the console and press Enter to run it. To see the in-game command list, enter
help; Bethesda Support identifies this as the route to a complete list. - Press the console key again to close it and return to the game.
How to add gold or items
Use player.additem <ItemID> <quantity>. Replace <ItemID> with the item’s ID and <quantity> with the number you want to add.

For example, player.additem 0000000f 1000 adds 1,000 gold, according to PC Gamer’s command guide. The Steam Community guide also lists 0000000a as the lockpick ID, so player.additem 0000000a 10 is an example of adding ten lockpicks. These are selected examples, not a complete command reference. Type help in the game to find available commands and syntax.

Targeted commands need the right selection
Commands such as unlock act on the object selected in the console. Open the console and click the intended door or container before entering the command. If the selection is wrong, the command may affect a different object or fail. Commands that alter quests, characters, attributes, or the world can have wider effects than simple item additions; avoid experimenting on a save you want to keep.
Special Edition console changes
Bethesda’s Special Edition Creations Update notes document PC console changes that include filtering in help by form type, Ctrl+C to copy a selected reference, Ctrl+V to paste, KAH to kill hostiles, and GetSelectedRefBase to return the selected reference’s base form ID. These are changes recorded in those Special Edition update notes, not confirmation that all Skyrim editions have identical console behavior. Bethesda’s Special Edition Creations Update notes.

What if the tilde key doesn’t work?
- Check the keyboard layout. On a US layout, try
~to the left of1; on a UK-configured layout, try`at the top-left. - Check for input-device or driver conflicts. Bethesda Support notes that Microsoft eHome devices or drivers can interfere with recognition of the tilde scan code.
- If the console opens but a command does not work, check its spelling, required arguments, target selection, and whether it applies to your game edition. Use
helpfor in-game command information.
Save before experimenting
Make a separate manual save before trying unfamiliar commands. PC Gamer warns that console commands can cause glitches, problems, or crashes; a separate save gives you a point to return to, but it is not a guarantee that every issue can be undone. PC Gamer’s command guide.
Does using console commands disable achievements?
Whether console use disables achievements is not established for every current PC edition and storefront. The available official sources do not confirm a universal rule, so do not assume the effect is the same across versions.
