If you already own Special Edition, compare the Anniversary Upgrade on your platform instead of buying the full game again. Special Edition remains a sensible choice if you don’t want the extra content.
What’s the difference between Special Edition and Anniversary Edition?
Special Edition is the core game in this comparison. Anniversary Edition is the full game bundled with the three official add-ons—Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn—and Creation Club content. Bethesda describes the Anniversary bundle as including more than 500 unique pieces of Creation Club content, including quests, dungeons, bosses, weapons, spells, armor, and gameplay modes. Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page lists the current bundle.
Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition FAQ also describes 74 Creations and more than 500 individual elements. Those are different ways of counting: the number of creations is not the number of individual pieces.

What does the Anniversary Upgrade do?
The Anniversary Upgrade is for someone who already owns Special Edition and wants the Anniversary content. It is not a standalone copy of Skyrim: Bethesda says the digital upgrade requires Special Edition. If you don’t own the base game, choose the full Anniversary Edition instead. Check the product name in your platform’s store before checkout so you don’t mistake the upgrade for the full game. Bethesda’s FAQ and product page outline the options.

Does Anniversary Edition improve graphics or performance?
Don’t choose Anniversary Edition on the assumption that it universally improves graphics or performance. Bethesda says Special Edition and Anniversary Edition owners on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S receive a free next-generation upgrade, with enhanced graphics and faster loading. That upgrade is a separate platform benefit, not a reason every buyer must purchase Anniversary Edition. Bethesda Support’s next-generation upgrade information covers the eligible consoles.
Switch 2 features
Bethesda lists Switch 2-specific features including enhanced resolution with DLSS anti-aliasing, improved loading times, optimized performance, mouse and motion controls, Amiibo support, and Zelda-inspired in-game items. These features are for the Switch 2 edition; they should not be assumed to apply to other platforms. Bethesda’s Switch 2 announcement provides the feature list.

Prices, formats, and downloads
There is no single current price that applies across platforms and regions. Check your platform’s store for the price and confirm whether the listing is the full game or the upgrade.
- Historical launch prices: Bethesda’s November 5, 2021 FAQ listed Anniversary Edition at USD $49.99 and the upgrade at USD $19.99, with different launch MSRPs for other listed currencies. These are launch prices, not current prices; Bethesda noted that price and availability could vary by region and platform. FAQ and launch announcement.
- Switch 2 announcement prices: Bethesda’s December 9, 2025 announcement listed $59.99 for the full edition and $19.99 for the upgrade. It also said owners of the original Switch Anniversary Edition could download the Switch 2 version for free. Treat these as announcement prices, not confirmed current prices. Bethesda’s announcement.
Format and download requirements matter, especially when buying a physical copy. Bethesda’s FAQ describes physical PS4 and Xbox One editions and says internet access is required to redeem and download the included Creation Club content. Bethesda’s Switch 2 announcement describes a physical code-in-box option and says Switch 2 versions are digital downloads. Check the listing’s platform and format before buying.
