smp.dll is usually associated with a legacy Adobe Audition German Language Module, not with Windows itself. If Windows reports that smp.dll is missing, the safest fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair that program rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The filename is not unique, however. An unrelated SMP.DLL is also used by ABB DriveOPC and DriveWindow installations. The application path and the executable reporting the error matter more than the filename alone.
First, identify which program needs smp.dll
Do this before copying files, running registration commands, or reinstalling Windows components.
Record the complete error
Write down the entire message and the program you were trying to open. Commonly reported messages include:

- “A required component is missing: smp.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “Error loading smp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The program can’t start because smp.dll is missing from your computer.”
These messages identify a loading failure, but they do not prove which product owns the file.
Also note whether the message appears when starting Adobe Audition, another legacy application, or a program installed under ABB DriveWare.
Search for existing copies
Open Command Prompt and run:
where smp.dll
If Windows finds a copy, record its complete path. If it finds nothing, search the folders belonging to the application that produced the message.
Do not search for every copy and replace them all. Multiple products can legitimately use the same filename.
The Adobe-associated file should normally be beside the legacy application or one of its language components, not in a general Windows system folder. An ABB installation may instead contain:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesDriveWareDriveOPCSMP.DLL
The capitalization is not important to Windows, but the owning product is.
Inspect the file properties
In File Explorer:
- Right-click
smp.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Check Product name, File description, File version, and Company.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is present.
- Record the folder containing the file.
A file described as an Adobe Audition Language Module should be located with the Adobe application that uses it. A file claiming to be Adobe while sitting in an unrelated temporary folder, download folder, or system directory deserves caution.
The Adobe-associated entry is reported in archive metadata as a 32-bit file connected with the old Adobe Audition German Language Module. Reported metadata also associates it with version 1.5.4124.1 and a size of approximately 2.5 KB, but this is not a current Adobe file manifest. Treat those details as identification clues, not as a reason to download a matching file.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that reports the error
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes, plus any installer download time
For this type of DLL, repairing the parent application is the most likely and safest solution. A missing file may be only one symptom of an incomplete installation, damaged language component, moved program folder, or failed migration from another computer.
If the caller is a current Creative Cloud Audition installation
Use the Creative Cloud desktop application:
- Open Creative Cloud.
- Select Apps.
- Find Audition in the installed applications list.
- Select the More actions menu beside Audition.
- Choose the available repair, update, uninstall, or reinstall action.
- If the required legacy release is offered, open More actions, choose Other versions, and select the appropriate available release.
- Restart Windows after the installation completes.
- Start Audition again from its normal shortcut.
The exact legacy file may not be included in a current Audition package. Do not assume that installing the newest Audition version will recreate a file belonging to an older release.
If Audition starts normally, open a project and confirm that its language resources, presets, and plug-ins behave as expected. If the same error returns, continue with a clean reinstall rather than copying smp.dll from another computer.

Before removing anything, back up:
- Audition sessions and projects
- Presets
- Custom effects
- Plug-ins
- Templates
- User-created settings
Then:
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the matching Adobe Audition entry.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal and restart Windows.
- Sign in with an administrator account if required.
- Reinstall from the original licensed disc, installer, or another legitimate Adobe-supported source.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator if the normal launch fails.
- Install to a consistent folder and avoid restoring only selected files from an old backup.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the installer cannot overwrite old files, uninstall the damaged copy first, restart, and then install again. Do not delete unrelated Adobe folders unless the product’s own removal process or documentation directs you to do so.
Confirm whether the repair worked
A successful repair should do more than remove the popup. Confirm that:
- The application opens without the
smp.dllmessage. - The program’s installation folder contains its expected files.
- The same error does not return after a restart.
- The application can open or create a test project.
- Antivirus protection does not immediately quarantine the restored file.
If the application opens only when run as administrator, the installation may have a permissions or compatibility problem rather than a missing DLL alone.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Security software can quarantine an application file after an update, migration, or scan. Check this before downloading anything.
Windows Security steps
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
smp.dllor the application that failed to start. - Expand the event and inspect the file path, publisher, and action taken.
If a legitimate installer restored the file and Windows Security quarantined it, do not immediately create a broad exclusion. First verify that:
- The file is in the application’s expected folder.
- The file’s product and company information match the parent application.
- The file came from the original installer.
- The security product identifies the same file consistently.
If confidence is high, use the security product’s Allow on device or Restore action, then repair or reinstall the application. If the file is unsigned, located in an unexpected directory, or came from a DLL download page, leave it quarantined and reinstall the parent application instead.
A permanent antivirus exclusion for an unverified DLL is not a repair.
Fix 3: Check permissions and a moved installation
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A valid file can appear unavailable when the program was moved, partially copied, restored from backup, or blocked by permissions.
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Right-click the application’s executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator temporarily.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the application.
If this works, the installation or its folder permissions need attention. Do not leave administrator mode enabled permanently unless necessary. Instead, repair or reinstall the program into a consistent location.
For a copied legacy application, reinstalling is preferable to copying one DLL. The program may require additional language files, configuration data, registry entries, or dependent modules that were not included in the copied folder.
If the program was restored from a backup, restore the complete application through its installer when possible. A partial folder restore can leave the executable and DLL set out of sync.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that smp.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found smp.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
First check whether the file exists beside the calling application. If it does, repair or reinstall the application rather than trying random runtime packages.
There is no reliable evidence that the Adobe-associated smp.dll is a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET component. Installing unrelated redistributables should not be the first response.

Only install a runtime when the complete error identifies a separate missing runtime file and the application’s official requirements call for that runtime. Use the runtime’s official Microsoft source, match the application’s architecture where required, and restart afterward.
If the error changes to name another DLL, record that new filename. It may indicate a broader damaged installation rather than a problem with smp.dll.

Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes
System File Checker repairs protected Windows files. It normally does not restore a private Adobe application DLL. Use these commands when Windows itself shows other corruption symptoms, such as broken system features, repeated component errors, or damaged built-in applications.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run SFC second
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows.
A message saying that Windows Resource Protection found and repaired corrupted files indicates that Windows components were repaired. It does not confirm that smp.dll was restored. Test the original application afterward.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds, while the repair action is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that application owns smp.dll.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 unless the owning product requires it
Time needed: 5 minutes
regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that provide the required registration entry point, such as DllRegisterServer.
Running this by default is not appropriate:
regsvr32 smp.dll
It may return an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, and it cannot recreate a missing file or repair a damaged installation.
There is no public evidence establishing that the Adobe-associated smp.dll requires registration. Use regsvr32 only when the owning product’s documentation explicitly instructs you to do so.
ABB DriveOPC is a separate case. Its vendor documentation includes its own registration procedure, so do not apply that procedure to Adobe Audition merely because both products use the filename SMP.DLL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
Adobe Audition versions 1.0 through 3 were Windows-only products, and Audition 1.5 was designed for much older Windows releases. Adobe does not currently guarantee that Audition 1.5 runs on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
If the correct reinstall still fails:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter.
- Select Run.
- Choose the affected Audition executable.
- Follow the prompts and test the recommended settings.
You can also test compatibility settings manually:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Test an older Windows version offered by the troubleshooter.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
Compatibility mode cannot supply a missing file. It helps only when the complete installation is present but the old program does not work correctly on the current operating system.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but that does not make arbitrary DLL substitutions valid. The reported Adobe-associated smp.dll is a 32-bit legacy application file. Use the original application and matching files rather than searching for a supposed 64-bit replacement.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the caller needs them
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
A display, audio, or device driver is not normally the owner of Adobe’s smp.dll. Check drivers only if the error appears while opening hardware-related software or if Device Manager shows a separate problem.

- Use Update Driver and select Search automatically for drivers, or download the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver update, return to the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver when available.
Do not replace smp.dll because Device Manager lists an unrelated driver warning. Repair the product named in the error first.
Manually hunting through driver versions can be time-consuming and can install the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns smp.dll.
Why downloading smp.dll is unsafe
Avoid random DLL download websites and “DLL fixer” bundles. A downloaded file can have:
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- Missing dependencies
- An altered or malicious payload
- No trustworthy publisher information
- A license or provenance problem
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is especially risky. Those folders are not general storage locations for third-party application files, and placing a DLL there can affect file search behavior or make future diagnosis more confusing.

FAQ
Is smp.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence identifies the Adobe-associated smp.dll as a protected Windows component. It should not normally be expected in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Does smp.dll belong to Adobe Audition?
Reported archive metadata associates one smp.dll with the old Adobe Audition German Language Module. That identification is useful but is not a current Adobe package manifest. Confirm the caller and file path before acting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is there another product named SMP.DLL?
Yes. ABB DriveOPC and DriveWindow use an unrelated SMP.DLL, commonly under a DriveWare folder. The shared filename does not mean the files are interchangeable.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first step. smp.dll is not identified as one of those Microsoft runtime files. Install a runtime only when the complete error names a separate dependency and the application requires it.
Will SFC restore smp.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not private Adobe application files. Repair or reinstall the owning application instead.
Should I run regsvr32 smp.dll?
Not by default. Registration is relevant only when the owning product explicitly requires it and the DLL supports the required registration entry point.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Audition 1.5 work on Windows 11?
It is legacy software designed for older Windows versions, and current support is not guaranteed. A compatibility setting may help some installations, but it cannot make an incomplete or unsupported installation reliable.
What if the error remains after reinstalling?
Identify the exact executable producing the message, confirm which smp.dll path it is loading, and inspect the next dependency named by the error. Do not keep replacing files with the same name. If the caller is ABB DriveOPC or another application, follow that product’s repair process instead of continuing with Adobe troubleshooting.
