Marco “Snappi” Pfeiffer says declining individual form and mounting pressure helped convince him to step away from playing Counter-Strike. He has now taken the head-coach job at HEROIC, drawn by the team’s potential and the people he spoke with. In an interview published by HLTV on 2 October 2026, he described the end of a playing career spanning almost 20 years across CS 1.6, CS:GO and CS2—and the learning curve he expects in coaching.
Why Snappi felt it was time to stop playing
Snappi said he had reached a point where he felt new players should take his place. “I think my individual level has gotten to the point where it’s better to let some new faces come in,” he said in the interview with the HLTV Confirmed crew.
Looking back at his last period as a player, he recalled that the first four or five CS2 events went well, but that things became rough afterward. He felt his individual output had fallen below the level he expected of himself, and said that may also have affected his calling. HLTV did not provide event-by-event statistics to quantify that retrospective assessment.
The pressure of the final months
Snappi described the last six months of his playing career as unusually pressurized. In his account, he felt he had to perform or retire: “The last six months I think I had a lot more pressure, because I knew I was playing… either I perform now or it is retirement, and that added a different level of pressure than I think I ever had in my career.”

He also said social-media criticism had been intense. Those remarks describe his experience; the interview does not quantify the criticism or establish it as a broader trend across esports.
How the departure came about
Snappi said he had raised the possibility with Xizt that the team needed more firepower in his position. He described the outcome as mutual, while characterizing it as more of an organization-level decision than one driven by the players. “In the end it was kind of mutual, of course. I think it was more of an org decision that came down, I don’t think it was players involved in it at all, but I thought it was the right decision.”

Why he accepted HEROIC’s coaching opportunity
Snappi said he had initially planned to wait until the transfer window after the Major. He changed course when the HEROIC opportunity arrived, citing the team’s youth and potential and positive conversations with people in the organization. “At first my plan was to wait for the transfer window after the Major, but when this opportunity came now, I just felt okay, I am gonna jump on it.”

What he expects to learn as a coach
Snappi has framed the move as a new role that will require learning, not a finished coaching formula. He said he may use books or courses to develop his understanding of the psychological aspects of coaching. The interview did not name specific materials or outline a formal curriculum. His stated approach is to arrive humbly: “I have to come in with a humble mindset.”
