Effective nonprofit social media starts with a clear mission-linked goal, a realistic plan, and safeguards for the people and information involved. Choose platforms your team can serve consistently, make posts accessible, and measure whether they prompt useful next steps—not just likes. There is no universally best platform or posting frequency; the right approach depends on your audience, capacity, and purpose.
Start with a mission-linked goal
Ask: “What do you want your nonprofit’s social media presence to accomplish?” LinkedIn for Nonprofits identifies goals such as raising awareness, building recognition and trust, driving website traffic, and developing donor relationships.
Choose one primary outcome for each campaign or content series, then connect it to an action people can take. For example, a program update might invite volunteer inquiries, while a fundraising post can link to a campaign page. Treat reach, clicks, and engagement as signals along that path—not as proof that a donation occurred or that the organization achieved its mission.
Choose platforms your team can sustain
Use platforms where your intended audience can find and engage with you, and where your team can publish suitable content reliably. Being present everywhere is not a strategy if accounts go quiet or cannot be moderated. The available guidance does not establish one best platform or a definitive demographic comparison, so make the choice against your own audience, objectives, content skills, and capacity.

Set a sustainable publishing rhythm
No universal posting frequency is established for nonprofits. Start with a cadence your team can maintain without sacrificing accuracy, accessibility, or moderation. Review performance and workload over time; adjust if the plan is difficult to sustain or if posts are not helping advance the intended objective.
A lightweight content calendar makes that plan usable. For each post, record:

- Its objective and intended audience.
- The platform and format.
- The owner, draft deadline, and any approval needed.
- The destination link or call to action.
- The measure you will review and the period for reviewing it.
LinkedIn for Nonprofits recommends using a detailed calendar to keep activity aligned with strategy and tracking performance at both post and account level. A shared calendar also makes ownership and follow-up visible to staff and volunteers.
Measure outcomes, not vanity alone
Pick measures that match the goal, state the review period, and compare like with like. These are practical examples, not a universal KPI standard:
- Awareness: reach or impressions alongside relevant audience response.
- Website traffic: link clicks and visits to the destination page. Use consistent campaign tagging where your analytics setup supports it.
- Community engagement: meaningful comments, replies, or volunteer inquiries—not only reaction counts.
- Fundraising: separate social engagement and referral visits from completed gifts recorded by your donation system.
Look for patterns over time to inform what, when, and where to publish. A post and a later outcome occurring together does not by itself prove the post caused that outcome.

Put governance and risk controls in place
Social posts can be hard to undo, and public accounts can blur personal and professional boundaries. The Charity Commission for England and Wales updated its guidance on charities and social media on 21 April 2026 to reflect the Online Safety Act 2023. Its legal and trustee guidance applies to England and Wales; organizations elsewhere should check their own local law and regulator guidance. The Commission says trustees are responsible for agreeing a social media policy and proportionate internal controls. Its guidance covers risks including privacy, copyright, defamation, whistleblower protection, equality and human rights, and online safety. Read the Charity Commission’s guidance.
What your policy should cover
- Who owns each account, who may post or share, and what conduct is expected.
- When additional approval is required, especially for sensitive or high-risk posts.
- Who checks comments, how often they do so, and who can hide or remove content.
- How account access is secured and transferred when staff or volunteers leave.
- How to respond to an inaccurate post, a security issue, harmful content, or a reputational crisis—and who makes escalation decisions.
- What to do if someone breaches the policy, and how consequential decisions are recorded.
Use stronger review and escalation steps for posts involving vulnerable people, sensitive personal information, or emotionally charged issues. A clear process helps contributors act quickly without leaving difficult decisions to whoever happens to be online.

Protect people and respect content rights
Before publishing personal information, images, or stories, consider privacy obligations and obtain consent where required. Avoid revealing a beneficiary’s sensitive details or location unless there is a lawful and appropriate basis. For photographs, artwork, and other material created by someone else, obtain permission and check usage rights rather than assuming that online availability means it can be reused. Follow platform rules and establish a route for reporting harmful or potentially illegal content.

Build accessibility into the publishing workflow
Accessibility needs to survive the full path from draft to published post. The National Council of Nonprofits notes that platforms and third-party scheduling tools can differ in their support for accessibility features.
- Add captions to video so viewers can follow its spoken content.
- Where supported, write concise descriptive alt text for meaningful images.
- Put essential information in post text rather than only inside an image or graphic.
- Preview the post on mobile and confirm that the publishing route preserved captions, descriptions, and formatting.
Use generative AI as a drafting aid, not an approver
Google for Nonprofits says generative AI can help with tasks such as drafting social media posts. Treat generated text as a draft: a responsible person should verify factual claims, check for bias and fit with the organization’s mission, and review the wording before publication. Do not enter personal or confidential information into an AI tool until you have checked its privacy and security terms. See Google for Nonprofits’ responsible AI guidance.
