Social media terms describe different parts of making, publishing, distributing, and measuring video. Reach is not the same as views; a YouTube thumbnail impression is not a view; and a view count may not be the measure a platform uses for monetization eligibility. This glossary explains the distinctions, with platform-specific definitions where they matter.
Publishing terms: the parts of a video post
Caption
A caption is the text accompanying a video or post. It can add context, identify people or places, or direct viewers to more information. It is separate from a video’s hashtags and cover image.
Cover or thumbnail
A cover or thumbnail is an image representing a video before someone opens or encounters it. On YouTube, a thumbnail can be shown in places that count toward the platform’s impressions metric; the image itself is not a view.
Hashtag
A hashtag is a tagged word or phrase that can help categorize or navigate content. Meta’s 2020 Instagram Reels launch description said a Reel could appear on pages associated with certain hashtags. TikTok also lists hashtags among the content information that may be considered in recommendations. Neither fact means that adding a particular hashtag guarantees distribution.

Reels
Reels is Instagram’s short-form video format. Meta’s August 2020 launch description used the term for videos creators could record in clips or upload, then publish with elements such as a cover, caption, hashtags, or tags. That launch-era description is useful for understanding the vocabulary, but it does not establish which controls are available in Instagram’s current interface.
Creator tools and analytics
Creator tools are platform features for publishing or managing content and, depending on the service, reviewing performance, responding to comments, or exploring monetization. TikTok Studio is TikTok’s example. TikTok says Studio features vary across its app and web experiences, and some functions are best accessed in a browser; the exact controls available to an account may differ.

What do reach, impressions, and views mean?
These terms describe different kinds of exposure and activity. Their definitions can vary by platform and format, so treat a metric as the named platform defines it rather than as a universal score.
| Term | What it describes | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Reach or unique reach | Exposure to people. YouTube calls its figure “unique reach” and describes it as an estimate of individual people who saw a video or channel. | It is an estimate, not a view count. The definition and calculation can differ by service. |
| YouTube thumbnail impression | An occasion when YouTube registers a thumbnail being shown to a viewer. | An impression is not proof that the viewer played the video. |
| View | A platform-recorded play or viewing event. | There is no safe assumption that every service counts views the same way. |
| YouTube click-through rate (CTR) | In YouTube’s impressions report, how often viewers watched after seeing a thumbnail. | This definition belongs to that YouTube report; do not apply it to another platform without its documentation. |
YouTube says that starting August 24, 2026, views across formats count when playback starts. Its YouTube Partner Program earnings and eligibility continue to use engaged or qualified measures, rather than treating that broader view count as interchangeable with those measures. When reviewing YouTube analytics after that effective date, check which metric a report or eligibility rule actually names.

What are engaged views, stayed-to-watch, and watch time?
Engaged view (YouTube)
An engaged view is a YouTube measure of times viewers stayed past the initial seconds; loops are excluded. It is distinct from the broader view count.
Stayed to watch (YouTube Shorts)
Stayed to watch is the percentage of times Shorts viewers stayed past the initial seconds instead of swiping away. It describes an initial response, not the total time watched.

Watch time and average view duration (YouTube)
Watch time is the total time viewers spent watching YouTube content. Average view duration is the average minutes watched among viewers who stayed to watch; YouTube calculates it from engaged views and their corresponding watch time. A large view count and substantial watch time therefore answer different questions.

Read metrics as stages in a viewer’s path, not as interchangeable grades. YouTube and TikTok use their own analytics and terminology, and raw counts across services may not be methodologically equivalent.

What does the algorithm use to recommend videos?
A recommendation feed is a personalized stream of suggested content. TikTok says its For You feed may use user interactions, content information—including sounds and hashtags—and user information. TikTok also says that, for most users, interactions such as time spent watching are generally weighted more heavily than other factors it lists. This is a platform explanation, not a complete ranking formula or a recipe that guarantees reach; creators cannot control the recommendation outcome by adding one sound or hashtag.
What does branded or commercial content mean?
Branded or commercial content generally refers to content made in a commercial collaboration or for a brand, but the term does not have one established legal definition or disclosure rule across platforms and jurisdictions. TikTok’s commercial-content quality standard discusses user experience, authenticity, trustworthiness, and whether a video reflects actual product use. That is a quality standard, not a complete legal disclosure guide. Check the platform’s current labeling controls and the rules that apply where you publish before relying on any disclosure practice.
How do creator vocabulary and tools vary by platform?
A word may sound familiar across services without having the same metric or interface behind it. TikTok’s 2019 glossary introduced basic terms such as creator, profile, and community; it is useful as foundational vocabulary, not as evidence that today’s interface is unchanged. Meta’s Reels launch description is likewise historical. For current controls, use the platform’s current help pages and the analytics definitions shown for the specific account and format.
