Solo Leveling: ARISE pairs fast, satisfying action with a progression loop that can feel tedious. That was Beebom’s verdict after playing an early-access preview only through chapter 6; a separate launch-period review also criticized the game for repetitive, grind-heavy progression. Those impressions describe specific builds and playthroughs, not a measurement of how long every player will take to advance.
What is Solo Leveling: ARISE?
Solo Leveling: ARISE is a single-player action RPG adaptation of the Solo Leveling webtoon. Players follow Sung Jinwoo as he takes on gates and grows toward becoming the Monarch of Shadows. Netmarble outlined the game’s combat systems in its March 25, 2024 official showcase. The company announced a worldwide launch for Android, iOS, and PC on May 8, 2024; that dated announcement does not confirm present-day service status or availability in a particular region. In its launch announcement, Netmarble reported more than 15 million pre-registered players, a company-reported count rather than an independent measure of active players or sales (showcase; launch announcement).
Why did the preview call leveling a grind?
Progress can feel gated
Beebom described leveling as fun but tedious in its early-access preview, whose playthrough stopped at chapter 6. The author said progress felt level-gated: reaching boss encounters could mean completing more gates and side content first. That is a limited-preview impression, not proof that all players will encounter the same pacing or that progression takes a set amount of time. Beebom’s framing, “Being a Hunter Like Jinwoo Is a Grind,” belongs to that preview rather than standing as a universal verdict (Beebom preview).
Character growth adds another layer
A launch-period PCGamesN review also described progression as grindy, frustrating, and repetitive, while noting Sung Jinwoo’s attribute development alongside draw-based hunter acquisition and duplicate-dependent limit breaks. Those are the reviewer’s assessments of the build and period played, not current guidance on specific requirements, drop rates, or progression speed (PCGamesN review).

- Play as Sung Jinwoo: Directly control the protagonist, experiencing his growth and leveling up from E-Rank to the strongest hunter.
- Authentic Story Adaptation: Relive the webtoon's iconic narrative through high-quality graphics, voice-acted cutscenes, and animated comic panels.
- Dynamic Action Combat: Engage in real-time, fast-paced battles with responsive controls, dodge mechanics (Extreme Evasion), and QTE skills.
- Customizable Combat Style: Adapt your playstyle by mixing and matching various weapons and skills for Sung Jinwoo.
- Recruit & Strategize with Hunters: Summon and build teams with beloved characters from the original series, each with unique abilities and roles (e.g., support, damage, tank).
The tension is part of the appeal and the trade-off: Jinwoo’s rise is the story’s central fantasy, but pursuing that growth also means developing characters and gathering resources. In the preview, that pursuit could feel like busywork when the next major encounter was out of reach.
Does the combat make the grind worthwhile?
Combat offers variety and timing
Netmarble’s showcase describes weapons and runes that alter combat styles, Extreme Evasion, Shadow Step counterattacks, situational QTE skills, summoned shadows, and the ability to switch among hunters. This is the developer’s description of the system, not an independent assessment of how well each mechanic works (Netmarble showcase).

Reviewers liked the moment-to-moment action
PCGamesN praised the movement as fast, fluid, and responsive, highlighting well-timed dodges and using skills at useful moments. That gives the grind criticism a meaningful counterpoint: the action itself could be engaging even when character development felt repetitive (PCGamesN review).
Mobile controls may complicate QTEs
Pocket Tactics said touch controls could make it difficult to tap the right attack during quick-time events and recommended a controller for mobile play. Treat that as the reviewer’s practical advice, not a tested requirement or a guarantee that a controller will suit every player (Pocket Tactics review).

What should players know about draws and spending?
Launch-period reviews noted gacha draws, character and weapon acquisition, duplicates, bundles, and paid summon offers. Pocket Tactics specified that its review used a pre-release build and that it had not seen the full range of microtransactions and battle passes; Pro Game Guides also discussed monetization and draws. These accounts establish that gacha and purchase systems were part of the game’s design at the time, but they do not establish current prices, draw rates, event rules, or the full present-day offer set (Pocket Tactics; Pro Game Guides).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, is being a hunter like Jinwoo a grind?
In the limited chapter 6 preview, leveling could be enjoyable yet tedious, with gates and side content standing between the player and some boss encounters. A launch-period review likewise found repetition in progression. But reviewers also praised the responsive action, dodging, and combat timing. The fairest answer is that the game’s progression may feel grindy to players who dislike repeated resource gathering or gated advancement, while its combat can help make that climb satisfying. The available reviews do not quantify the time required, establish a universal experience, or verify how current progression is tuned.
