Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is no single fix for every PC crash in Life is Strange: Double Exposure. The safest order is to update the game, verify its Steam files, update the graphics driver, disable overlays, reduce rendering load, and then test the community-reported -dx11 launch option. The correct fix depends on whether the game crashes before the menu, during loading, in a cinematic, or at one repeatable story scene.
Do not delete your saves or reinstall Windows as a first step. Use the diagnostic sequence below to identify whether the problem is file corruption, hardware compatibility, drivers, overlays, DirectX rendering, or a chapter-specific bug.

Start with the symptom
Where the crash happens is the most useful clue:
- Immediately after pressing Play or before the main menu: check files, drivers, overlays, and the renderer.
- Black screen or infinite loading: update the game, verify files, disable overlays and HDR, then test
-dx11. - Crash when starting a new game or loading a chapter: verify files and try restarting the affected scene.
- Crash during a cinematic, Quick Time Event, or timeline transition: lower settings, disable HDR, cap the frame rate, and test the other rendering path.
- Random desktop crashes after several minutes: check temperatures, remove overclocks or undervolts, update drivers, and disable overlays.
LowLevelFatalError, rendering-thread, shader, or DXGI errors: treat them as clues involving files, drivers, GPU stability, or rendering—not proof that one component has failed.- “Out of video memory”: lower texture and resolution settings, close GPU-heavy applications, and check your VRAM.
This game released on PC on October 29, 2024, and has received later updates. The December 5, 2024 update addressed a PC infinite-loading issue, while a Steam update listed on May 14, 2025 removed Denuvo. Those changes fix named issues; they do not guarantee that every PC crash has been eliminated. See the official update history and Steam news listing.
Quick fixes to try first
- Finish every pending Steam download. Open Steam and wait until the game is fully updated.
- Verify the installation. Use the procedure below before changing configuration files or saves.
- Update the GPU driver. Use the official NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel download page.
- Disable overlays and monitoring tools. Temporarily turn off Steam, Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, recording, RGB, and peripheral overlays.
- Reduce rendering load. Use Low or Medium, disable HDR and ray tracing if available, enable V-Sync, and cap the game at 60 fps or lower.
- Test DirectX 11. Add
-dx11in Steam launch options if the default renderer still crashes.
Test one change at a time where possible. That tells you which category of problem you have and makes it easier to undo a workaround.

Check the official PC requirements
Square Enix lists these Windows PC requirements:
| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10/11, 64-bit | Windows 10/11, 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i5-2400 or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-7700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 12 GB RAM | 12 GB RAM |
| GPU | GTX 960 4 GB or Radeon RX 470 4 GB | RTX 2080 Super 8 GB or RX 6700 XT 12 GB |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Storage | 25 GB | 25 GB |
| Publisher target | 1080p, 30 fps | 1080p, 60 fps |
Check the official requirements and the Steam listing for the complete specification. The publisher recommends an SSD, but does not list one as mandatory.
Minimum requirements are not a promise of crash-free play or guaranteed performance in every scene. A GPU with less than 4 GB of VRAM is below the listed minimum. Laptop players should also confirm that the game uses the discrete GPU rather than integrated graphics.
Verify the Steam game files
File verification is Square Enix’s documented first-line response for crashes, startup failures, and black screens. It is safer than deleting the installation or save data.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Life is Strange: Double Exposure and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files. Older Steam interfaces may call this Local Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the scan and any reacquisition to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Steam may report that one or more files were reacquired. That is normally the repair result, not a new error. The same procedure appears in Square Enix’s crash and missing-files FAQ, where older Steam labels are used.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Test DirectX 11 when DirectX 12 appears to be involved
-dx11 is the most prominent community-reported workaround for launch and loading crashes. It is not an officially guaranteed universal fix. It tests whether the default DirectX 12 rendering path is involved.
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab.
- Find Launch Options.
- Enter
-dx11. - Close the window and launch the game.
Some players have also reported trying:
-force -dx11
Try -dx11 first and test only one option at a time. The extra -force parameter is not presented by Square Enix as an official fix.
DirectX 11 may let the game start or pass a problem scene, but reports also describe graphical glitches, lower performance, later cinematic crashes, or no improvement. If it works, reach the next normal autosave, quit normally, remove the launch option, and test the default renderer again. To remove it, return to Properties → General → Launch Options and delete the text.

Fix crashes during cinematics or specific chapters
A crash at the same cinematic, timeline switch, or chapter is different from a game that cannot boot. It may be a scene-specific game bug, a rendering transition, an overlay conflict, or a damaged asset.
- Return to the main menu.
- Use the available chapter, scene replay, or checkpoint restart option.
- Set the preset to Low or Medium.
- Disable HDR temporarily.
- Disable ray tracing or other expensive optional effects.
- Enable V-Sync and cap the frame rate at 60 fps or lower.
- Replay the scene without changing display settings during the transition.
Players have reported that restarting a scene and combinations of lower settings, HDR off, V-Sync, and a 60-fps cap helped in some cases. These are community workarounds, not publisher-confirmed fixes; see the community crash reports.
If DX11 gets you through the scene, save normally, quit, remove the launch option, and test DX12 again. Restore graphics settings one at a time rather than re-enabling everything at once.
LowLevelFatalError, DXGI, and shader-related crashes
For LowLevelFatalError, rendering-thread failures, shader decompression errors, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, or DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, use this order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Verify the Steam files.
- Install the current driver from your GPU manufacturer.
- Disable overlays and recording tools.
- Return GPU, CPU, and RAM overclocks or undervolts to stock settings.
- Lower resolution, textures, HDR, and other expensive effects.
- Test
-dx11.
A normal driver update is the right first step. A clean driver installation is more appropriate if the problem began after a driver update or after switching GPU brands. Third-party driver-cleaner tools are optional advanced troubleshooting, not a required first-line fix.
A shader error does not prove that the CPU or another component is physically damaged. It is a diagnostic clue that can involve files, drivers, rendering, or engine state.
Disable overlays and check security software
Temporarily disable:
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay
- AMD Adrenalin overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner on-screen display
- Screen recording, RGB, peripheral, ReShade, and frame-generation tools
This is especially useful when the crash occurs during video playback, a cinematic, an overlay notification, or a resolution/HDR change.
If antivirus software is interfering with game files, prefer a temporary exception for the game folder or executable. Do not leave protection disabled, and remove the exception if it does not help. Never download replacement DLLs, “crash fixers,” registry cleaners, or unofficial game executables.
Assign the game to the high-performance GPU
On a laptop or hybrid-graphics system:
- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add the game executable if it is not listed.
- Set it to High performance.
- Plug in AC power and disable battery-saving mode while testing.
- Restart the game.
Use Steam’s Browse local files command to locate the executable instead of guessing its path. Also install current chipset and graphics drivers from the laptop manufacturer where appropriate. If the crash occurs during a display-mode change, test with an external monitor disconnected.
When a clean reinstall is justified
Reinstall only after verification, drivers, overlays, settings, and renderer tests. It is reasonable when verification repeatedly finds damaged files, an update was interrupted, the installation directory has persistent errors, or mods and injectors were previously used.
- Back up saves if you know their location.
- Remove Steam launch options.
- Uninstall the game through Steam.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall to an SSD with at least 25 GB free, if available.
- Verify the new installation.
- Launch once with overlays disabled.
- Re-enable optional tools individually.
An SSD can improve loading and streaming, but it is not an established universal crash cure. Do not buy a new GPU merely because the game crashes if your system already meets or exceeds the published requirements.
Protect your saves
Do not delete local saves as a routine troubleshooting step. A crash at a chapter checkpoint may be caused by the scene or renderer rather than save corruption.
If corruption is genuinely suspected, back up the save folder first. Be careful with Steam Cloud: disabling it or deleting files can cause the wrong copy to replace the current one. Contact Square Enix support before deleting local or cloud data.

When none of the fixes work
Report the issue to Square Enix with enough detail to distinguish a general launch failure from a scene-specific bug. Include:
- The exact chapter, scene, cinematic, or timeline transition.
- Whether the crash occurs before the menu, during loading, or after playing for a while.
- The complete error text, including any
LowLevelFatalErroror DXGI code. - Windows edition and version.
- CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, and whether the system is a laptop.
- GPU driver version.
- Whether Steam verification reacquired files.
- Whether overlays, mods, injectors, HDR, and overclocks were disabled.
- Whether
-dx11changed the behavior.
Attach crash logs or a system report if the support form requests them. This is more useful than reporting only that “the game crashes.”
FAQ
Does -dx11 permanently fix the game?
No. Some players report that it allows the game to launch or pass a problem scene, but it can introduce visual or performance problems and may fail later. Treat it as a diagnostic or temporary workaround.
Will verifying files delete my save?
Steam file verification repairs installation files; it is not a save-deletion procedure. Still, back up important saves before making broader changes.
Should I disable HDR?
It is worth testing when the crash occurs during a cinematic, display transition, or scene load. Restore it later if stability returns.
Can a PC above the recommended requirements still crash?
Yes. Requirements do not eliminate driver conflicts, overlays, unstable overclocks, renderer problems, or scene-specific bugs.
Should I reinstall Windows?
No—not for this problem as a first response. Verify the game, update drivers, remove hooks and overclocks, test rendering settings, and contact support first.
