There is no single confirmed fix for every Limbus Company crash. Start by identifying whether Steam closes the game immediately, shows a black screen, freezes while loading, or reports a network error. Then work through the least-destructive checks: restart Steam and Windows, check ProjectMoon’s announcements, update Windows and the graphics driver, verify the installation, and disable software that hooks into games.
Identify exactly where Limbus Company fails

Check for a ProjectMoon or Steam issue first
Review the official Limbus Company Steam announcements before changing files. ProjectMoon posted a “Ver. 1.111.0 Known Issues and Hotfix ETA” notice on August 6, 2026; that notice said a hotfix could arrive after restarting the game and might require additional in-game downloads. The feed also contains scheduled update notices, so a crash that begins immediately after maintenance may be a game-side regression rather than a damaged installation.
There is no evidence in the reviewed official notices of a universal PC outage on August 18, 2026. If announcements do not indicate an incident, continue with local troubleshooting.
Confirm that the PC meets the listed requirements
The Steam store listing names the following requirements. It shows identical minimum and recommended specifications, but meeting them does not guarantee stability: drivers, laptop GPU selection, Windows builds, background software and storage health can still cause failures.

The listing explicitly names Windows 10; it does not establish a specific Windows 10 build or make a separate Windows 11 compatibility guarantee. Linux, SteamOS, ChromeOS, virtual machines and unofficial compatibility layers require a different diagnosis from native Windows.
Apply the low-risk fixes in order
1. Restart Steam completely
- Choose Steam → Exit.
- Open Task Manager and confirm that Steam is no longer running.
- Reopen Steam and launch Limbus Company.
- If Steam itself is malfunctioning, restart Windows before deleting or editing game files.
2. Install Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install pending updates, restart, and test again. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance lists an outdated Windows installation as one possible reason a game fails after “Preparing to Launch”: Steam launch troubleshooting.
3. Update or roll back the graphics driver
Use the official driver channel for your GPU manufacturer: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. A clean installation is particularly appropriate if the crash started after a driver update, Event Viewer names a graphics module, other Unity or DirectX games also fail, or the PC recently changed GPUs.
The newest driver is not automatically the best one. If the failure began immediately after an update, testing the previous stable driver can be reasonable. Community reports have associated some silent crashes with Direct3D modules and have described both improvement after driver changes and continued loading-screen failures; those reports are individual evidence, not a universal fix.

4. Verify the Steam installation
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Limbus Company and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files (the wording can vary slightly by client version).
- Wait for Steam to finish reacquiring missing or damaged files, restart Steam, and test.
Verification normally does not erase account progress stored by the service. It cannot repair a driver, overlay, Windows problem, server incident or bug in the current game build. Steam’s game-specific support page is available here.
5. Remove hooks and overlays temporarily
Disable one item at a time, launch the game, and restore unrelated software after the test. Check:
- Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar and NVIDIA/AMD overlays
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- OBS game capture, Overwolf and third-party FPS counters
- ReShade and other injectors
- RGB, motherboard-monitoring and aggressive antivirus game-protection tools
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If it blocks the game, use the product’s official allow-list or exception procedure and restore normal protection afterward.
6. Test conservative display settings
- Use borderless windowed or windowed mode instead of exclusive fullscreen.
- Temporarily disable HDR and G-SYNC/FreeSync for Limbus Company.
- Turn off GPU recording and performance overlays.
- If the game opens, lower graphics settings and disable post-processing.
- On a laptop, check Settings → System → Display → Graphics and assign the intended integrated or dedicated GPU.
Clear local cache only after the basic checks
Community reports describe clearing local cache as a way to pass repeated crashes, but it can force a substantial redownload and may only help temporarily. Close both the game and Steam first. Do not delete the entire Steam installation, credential files, screenshots or unrelated game data; local paths vary by installation and game version. Treat this as a controlled reset of regenerated cache or configuration data, not a guaranteed repair.

Collect evidence from Windows and the game
Event Viewer
- Press Win + X and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs → Application.
- Find an Error at the crash time.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code and timestamp.
Player.log
The Windows log location listed by the Limbus Company FAQ is:

Copy the file after reproducing the problem. A community investigation also found Windows crash dumps under C:Users<UserName>AppDataLocalCrashDumps; this is a common Windows location, not a guaranteed Limbus-specific destination. The Limbus Company FAQ documents the log path.
Know when the problem is probably system-wide or game-side
- If other games crash too, investigate the GPU driver, RAM, overheating, Windows or hardware rather than Limbus Company alone.
- If only Limbus Company fails at one exact animation, battle or loading screen, reproduce it consistently and report it; a local fix may not exist for a current game regression.
- If the game works only after clearing cache, suspect local resource corruption, while recognizing that the symptom can return.
- Long loading on an older HDD is not automatically a crash. After verification, allow one reasonable several-minute test, but do not accept indefinite freezing as normal.
Windows, laptop and Steam Deck notes
Native Windows
Follow the decision tree above and keep Windows, the GPU driver and Steam current. Do not assume a Direct3D module named in one crash report describes every installation.

Laptops
Test both GPU assignments if available, connect power, and disable vendor performance overlays. A game that works on integrated graphics but not the dedicated GPU points toward GPU selection, driver profiles or an overlay/API conflict.
Steam Deck, Linux and Proton
These are compatibility-layer problems rather than native Windows crashes. Test the current Proton configuration, remove custom overlays or launch options, and consult Steam Deck/Linux-specific compatibility reports. Windows Event Viewer and the Windows Player.log path above do not apply in the same way.
Contact ProjectMoon support when the fixes fail
Steam lists ProjectMoon’s support address as [email protected]. Include:
- Your Steam username or account identifier, never your password
- Windows version, 64-bit status, CPU, GPU, RAM and driver version
- Whether the game is on an HDD or SSD
- The exact symptom, reproducible scene and crash time with time zone
- Which restart, update, verification, overlay and cache tests you performed
Player.log, Event Viewer details and any available crash dump- A screenshot or video of any visible error code

Should I reinstall Limbus Company first?
No. Restart Steam, update Windows and the GPU driver, verify the Steam files, and test without overlays before considering a full reinstall.

Does file verification delete my progress?
Steam file verification normally reacquires damaged installation files and does not erase account progress stored by the service.
