If Minecraft says there is “no internet connection” while other apps work, your PC may not be offline. The cause may instead be a Microsoft/Xbox sign-in problem, multiplayer privacy setting, firewall, Windows networking component, or the particular server you are trying to join. Diagnose the failure first; reinstalling Minecraft rarely fixes an outage, account restriction, or router problem.
These steps apply to Windows 10 PCs using Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock), Minecraft: Java Edition, or the Launcher. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so Microsoft no longer provides standard support for the operating system. Minecraft compatibility can vary by release; do not assume every current game version is fully supported on Windows 10.
Identify which connection is failing
“No internet” can describe several different problems. Start with the symptom that matches yours instead of applying every fix in sequence.

Minecraft for Windows is Bedrock Edition. Java and Bedrock have different multiplayer systems and ordinarily cannot join one another directly; players need a compatible edition and server. See Minecraft’s Java-versus-Bedrock guide.

Try these quick checks first
- Test Windows internet access. Open two or three unrelated websites and try another online app. If possible, check another device on the same Wi-Fi. If only this PC is offline, troubleshoot the PC; if all devices fail, restart the router and check with your ISP. For Ethernet, reseat the cable or test another one.
- Restart the PC and router. This can clear a temporary connection or sign-in fault. Wait for the router to reconnect fully before opening Minecraft.
- Check for an outage. Review the Mojang Support Center service-status information and Xbox status. If a relevant service has an incident, wait and try again later. Reinstalling the game or resetting DNS cannot repair a server-side outage.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy. If the game connects afterward, restore the VPN or proxy and investigate a narrow exception or its network settings. Do not leave security protections disabled as a permanent fix.
- Check date and time. In Windows Settings, confirm the date, time, and time zone are correct and set automatically where available. Incorrect system time can interfere with sign-in checks.
- Confirm your Minecraft edition and failure point. Note whether the error appears in the Launcher, at game sign-in, in the multiplayer menu, or only after selecting one Realm/server. This narrows which steps apply.
Check the Microsoft account and multiplayer permissions
A browser can sign in successfully while the Xbox app or Minecraft cannot. Those apps use their own stored account sessions, and multiple Microsoft accounts on one PC can leave Minecraft using a different gamertag than expected.
- Open the Microsoft Store and check the account shown there.
- Open the Xbox app and confirm it is signed in to the intended account and gamertag.
- Check the account/profile in the Minecraft Launcher and in Minecraft. For Windows Minecraft, the active gamertag may be associated with the Microsoft Store account used for the purchase. Minecraft’s Microsoft account guidance recommends signing out and back in with the correct Xbox account, then restarting the game, if the wrong gamertag is active.
- Sign out of the affected app, sign back in with the same intended account, close the app completely, and reopen it. Avoid switching accounts in only one place and assuming the others changed too.
If the game launches but multiplayer, Realms, invitations, or communication are blocked, review the account’s Xbox/Microsoft privacy settings. Realms requires privacy settings that allow Multiplayer and Clubs. Child and teen accounts may have additional restrictions controlled by a parent or family organizer. Ask that organizer to review the settings; do not try to evade family restrictions by making another account.
Also verify that the purchase and active account match. If the Launcher says you need to buy the game, or shows an unexpected profile or edition, resolve the account mismatch before reinstalling.

Allow Minecraft through Windows Firewall
Do not turn off Windows Firewall permanently. Allow only the relevant app on the network type you use. On Windows 10:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Firewall & network protection, then Allow an app through firewall.
- Select Change settings and find the relevant Minecraft, Launcher, Java, Xbox, or Gaming Services entry.
- Allow the appropriate entry on your private network when that is the network you trust and use. Avoid allowing apps on public networks without a clear need.
Java Edition may need a Java executable such as javaw.exe, rather than a file named Minecraft.exe. If an entry is missing, use Windows’ permitted-app workflow or update/reinstall the legitimate app so its rule can be recreated. Do not allow arbitrary executables from unofficial downloads. Third-party antivirus software may include a separate firewall; check that product’s controls too. Microsoft explains the available controls in its Firewall and network protection guide.
Test VPNs, filters, and other network software
Temporarily test without software or settings that inspect, filter, or reroute traffic: VPNs, proxy settings, third-party antivirus web shields, custom or parental DNS, ad-blocking DNS, and school or workplace network filters. If Minecraft works after one is disabled, turn protection back on and configure a specific exception with the provider or administrator rather than leaving the filter off.

If Minecraft connects through a phone hotspot but not your normal network, that points toward the router, DNS filtering, NAT behavior, ISP, or network policy; it does not prove which one is responsible. Virtual adapters, Hyper-V switches, and tunneling software can also affect connections. Keep their settings in mind before using Network reset.

Reset Windows networking if the connection itself is suspect
If websites also fail or the earlier checks point to Windows networking, use these commands as a controlled repair. They can disconnect the PC temporarily. If you use a static IP, business VPN, proxy, or special DNS setup, record those settings first.
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run these commands one at a time:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset- Restart Windows, reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet if needed, and test a website before testing Minecraft again.
The first two commands release and renew the IP configuration; the next clears the DNS cache, and the last two reset Winsock and TCP/IP-related settings. These commands will not resolve a service outage, account restriction, dead router, or unavailable private server. Microsoft documents network repair commands in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Use Network reset only as a later step
Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls the adapters with defaults. It is too disruptive to be a first response to a Minecraft-only error. Before proceeding, save Wi-Fi credentials, record any static IP/DNS or proxy settings, and note VPN or virtual-switch configuration. You may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi or set up VPN clients and Hyper-V virtual switches again.
- Open Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Select Network reset > Reset now and confirm.
- Let Windows restart, reconnect, and test general internet access before reopening Minecraft.

If web browsing works but Microsoft apps fail to authenticate, update or repair those components before reinstalling Minecraft.

- Close and reopen Microsoft Store, Xbox, and the Launcher. Sign in with the intended account.
- Install pending Windows updates, then open Microsoft Store and install available app updates.
- Refresh the Store cache: press Windows key + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and select OK. Wait for the blank Command Prompt window to close and the Store to reopen. This clears the Store cache; it does not change an account’s multiplayer permissions. - For an app that supports it, open Start > Settings > Apps, select the app, choose Advanced options, then select Repair. If Repair does not help, consider Reset; you may need to sign in again and restore app-specific settings. Labels and availability differ across Windows 10 builds and app types.
- Reinstall the affected app only after checking accounts, services, and network/security filters. Use the official Minecraft download page for the Launcher.

Gaming Services errors need a targeted repair
Investigate Gaming Services if the Xbox app or a game cannot install or launch, you are repeatedly prompted to install Gaming Services, or you see errors such as 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F. Those symptoms are different from a single server failing to connect.
Microsoft’s Gaming Services troubleshooting article gives a specific Windows 10 repair route for those errors, including removing Gaming Services components and reinstalling the service through the Xbox app. Use that procedure only when the symptoms match. It involves administrator-level changes; back up important data or create a restore point, follow Microsoft’s instructions exactly, and do not copy registry-removal scripts from unofficial sites.

Edition-specific checks
Minecraft for Windows (Bedrock)
- Check the Microsoft Store and Xbox app account, the active gamertag, privacy permissions, and Gaming Services.
- Confirm multiplayer and Clubs are permitted for Realms and other multiplayer features.
- If only Bedrock fails while Java works, prioritize the Store/Xbox/Gaming Services path rather than resetting Java settings.
Minecraft: Java Edition
- Confirm you are signed in to the intended Microsoft account in the Launcher.
- Check the server address, port, server status, and version compatibility.
- For firewall prompts, the relevant app may be Java (often
javaw.exe). Mods, mod loaders, modpacks, and third-party launchers can introduce their own compatibility or network issues; test a clean, current profile if practical. - If Bedrock works but Java does not, focus on Java’s firewall permission, Launcher/profile, mods, and the target Java server rather than assuming a general internet failure.
The two editions are distinct; the Java & Bedrock PC package does not merge them into one multiplayer system. Minecraft’s server guide also distinguishes server access and account sign-in requirements.
If only one friend, Realm, or server is failing
Do not reset the whole PC’s network for a failure limited to one destination. Check whether the server or Realm is online, confirm the address and port, ask the host whether the world is available, and verify that you have the required whitelist or invitation. Check that you and the host use compatible editions and supported versions. A block or account permission can also prevent joining even when the internet works.
Compare with another server or Realm, and if practical try a different network. If only a privately hosted server fails, contact its owner or administrator. Do not open router ports to fix a client-side connection failure; port forwarding is relevant only in particular hosting setups and can expose a home network if configured carelessly. Minecraft’s server guidance notes that private server and home-network configurations may be outside its normal support scope.

- A Minecraft or Xbox service incident is reported: wait for the service to recover rather than reinstalling.
- Only one private server fails: ask the host to check its server, whitelist, address, version, and permissions.
- The account is restricted: ask the family organizer or account administrator to review the applicable settings; a network reset will not remove an account restriction.
- Only a school, work, or managed network blocks play: contact its administrator instead of bypassing its controls.
- Gaming Services remains broken after the targeted Microsoft procedure: use Microsoft/Xbox support for the exact error.
- Other apps and devices also lose internet: continue with Windows, router, or ISP troubleshooting; Minecraft is not the underlying problem.
