Sonic Origins is a collection of four early Sonic games, released digitally on June 23, 2022. Its follow-up, Sonic Origins Plus, arrived on June 23, 2023, adding characters and Game Gear titles. The old “this June” framing is historical, not a hint of a 2026 release.
What games are in Sonic Origins?
The collection brings together four games: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. SEGA’s online manual also describes Story and Mission modes.

The original Sonic Origins launched as a download-only game for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. SEGA lists it as a 2D high-speed action game for one to two players on its official site.
How do Anniversary and Classic modes differ?
Anniversary Mode presents the games in updated 16:9 widescreen. Classic Mode keeps the original standard 4:3 presentation. The choice is a straightforward one: choose Anniversary for a widescreen view, or Classic if you prefer the original framing.

Is Sonic Origins Plus available physically?
SEGA documents physical Sonic Origins Plus editions for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. The package includes an artbook and reversible Sega Genesis jacket. The Plus Content Pack itself is downloaded using a code included with the package, rather than supplied as a separate physical add-on. SEGA’s Shopping Guide and product specifications distinguish these editions from Xbox and PC, which are listed as digital-only.

SEGA’s official launch announcement leaned directly into the collection’s appeal, saying: “Experience the games that defined a generation. Sonic Origins is available now!” The Sonic the Hedgehog account posted that message on June 23, 2022, when the original collection launched.
