Sega hears requests for Sonic remakes and ports—including a port of Sonic Unleashed—but Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka says the company currently has a stronger desire to spend its limited development resources on new games and surprises. His explanation is that modernizing an older game can take work comparable to making a new one. The interview announced no port, remake, platform or release date.
Iizuka made the remarks in an interview published by AUTOMATON WEST on September 30, 2026, after Tokyo Game Show 2026. He was identified as the Sonic series’ general producer. His comments describe his account of Sega’s priorities, not an announced release plan or an independently verified budget.
What Iizuka said about Sonic remakes and ports
Iizuka said Sega hears requests from fans for remakes and remasters, specifically mentioning people asking the company to port Sonic Unleashed. But he said his current preference is to use limited resources for new games and fresh surprises:
“We hear all sorts of requests from the fan community for remakes and remasters, such as people asking us to port Sonic Unleashed. But our resources are limited… Rather than using those limited resources to make remakes and remasters, we have a stronger desire to provide fans with new games and deliver new surprises.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The interview does not quantify how many fans have made these requests. It establishes that Iizuka says Sega hears them, not that a measured majority of players prefers one approach.
Why he says remakes can take as much work as new games
Iizuka argued that a remake is not necessarily a low-effort way to bring a familiar game back. In his view, developers may need to rebuild graphics and address gameplay that feels rough by current standards, rather than simply reissuing the old version unchanged.

“With remakes and remasters, you’re essentially providing the same experience again. But these days, remaking an old game requires about as many resources as creating a new title. You have to remake all the graphics, and you can’t simply release the gameplay as it was back then because many things are deemed rough by modern standards.”
When the interviewer raised converting a 4:3 display to 16:9, Iizuka agreed that the change is not necessarily simple. The point is not that every re-release requires the same work: his argument is that the effort depends on what must be rebuilt or adapted to make an older game suitable for a modern release.

What that means for a possible Sonic Unleashed port
Sonic Unleashed is an example of a port fans have requested, not a project Sega announced in this interview. Iizuka gave no release window, target platform or confirmation that the game is in development for a new system.
He did acknowledge a related concern: some Sonic games are difficult to obtain or unplayable for players today. He said Sega hears those concerns and asked affected players to wait longer, but did not promise that Sonic Unleashed or any other specific game will return.

How new releases fit into Sega’s broader Sonic strategy
Iizuka said the series has put out something new in some form each year across its 35-year history, while also noting that modern game projects can take three or five years. He described multiple development lines as a way to support the release lineup. The interview also says the Sonic brand’s growth has contributed to greater investment in games.
On the franchise’s wider media activity, Iizuka said movies and other projects can increase awareness, contribute to game sales and provide more resources for later games. He also said game developers’ resources are not used for transmedia projects, meaning that, in his account, movie or anime production is not delaying new games. These are his descriptions of Sega’s approach, not audited financial findings.

AUTOMATON WEST’s interview background puts cumulative Sonic series units at 1.77 billion as of January 2026 and says Sonic the Hedgehog launched on Mega Drive in 1991. Those figures provide franchise context; they do not change the immediate answer for fans waiting on a specific port: Iizuka recognized the requests, but announced no release.
