The key distinction: some racers and updates are free additions, while crossover packs and the Season Pass are paid offers. What you can buy—and what it costs—depends on your platform, edition, and regional store.
Is Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds DLC free?
Some content is free, but not all of it. SEGA’s June 9, 2025 announcement separated free-update racers from paid Season Pass content: it named Hatsune Miku, Joker, and Ichiban Kasuga as free-update racers, and described a six-wave Season Pass for crossover content, with Minecraft as its first announced wave. SEGA said the schedule and content could change, so treat that as the launch-era plan rather than a guarantee of the final lineup or dates. SEGA’s announcement explains the original distinction.
Free updates can also include downloadable add-ons. For example, SEGA’s August 25, 2026 announcement describes AXEL as a free update, while also saying an internet connection is required to claim add-ons. The Nintendo US catalog separately lists Blue Star Extreme Gear as a free download. That listing is for Nintendo Switch; check the relevant platform store for other platforms’ offers. SEGA’s AXEL notice and the Nintendo of America DLC catalog identify those examples.
What does the Season Pass include, and what can you buy separately?
The Season Pass is a paid bundle for crossover content, not a requirement to receive every free update. SEGA announced six planned DLC waves in 2025, but the schedule was subject to change. Nintendo’s US catalog lists the Season Pass and individual paid packs separately. At the time of that catalog listing in 2026, it showed the Season Pass at $29.99 and packs for Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, PAC-MAN, Mega Man, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at $5.99 each. Those are US Nintendo eShop listing prices, not global or guaranteed current prices; check your local storefront for today’s offers and compatibility.

| Option | What it gets you | Price evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Free updates | Content or changes delivered through updates; SEGA’s 2025 announcement named Hatsune Miku, Joker, and Ichiban Kasuga as free-update racers. | No price stated in SEGA’s announcement. |
| Standalone collaboration packs | Individual crossover content packs listed separately in the Nintendo US catalog. | $5.99 each for the five named packs in Nintendo of America’s 2026 US catalog listing; prices may change and vary by region. |
| Season Pass | Bundle for planned crossover DLC waves; SEGA announced six waves in 2025. | $29.99 in Nintendo of America’s 2026 US catalog listing; regional and current pricing may differ. |
| Blue Star Extreme Gear | Free downloadable bonus listed for Nintendo Switch. | Free in Nintendo of America’s catalog listing. |
The Season Pass may not be the right choice for every player. Compare its current local price with the individual packs you actually want, and check what content is already included in your edition before paying. Nintendo says its DLC requires the base game, which is sold separately.
Which platforms and editions are covered?
SEGA’s June 2025 release announcement named PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and Epic Games Store for the September 25, 2025 release, with Switch 2 planned later. Platform availability for an individual pack should be confirmed in that platform’s store rather than inferred from a listing on another store.

SEGA Japan’s product information lists a digital Switch 2 release on December 4, 2025, a physical release on April 10, 2026, and a ¥1,000 upgrade pass from the Switch version. It also says Switch save data can transfer to the Switch 2 edition. These dates and the upgrade price are Japanese product terms, not universal pricing or availability; check your territory’s storefront. SEGA Japan’s product information has the edition details.
Werehog purchase-window remedy
A specific historical offer should not be mistaken for a general bundle: SEGA Support says eligible purchasers of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack from December 3 through December 17, 2025 could request an eShop code for the free Werehog DLC Pack by providing proof of purchase. The support article was updated January 8, 2026. It does not establish that Werehog is free for all Switch 2 purchasers. SEGA Support’s instructions describe the eligibility window and request process.

Do you need to update the game or connect to the internet?
Yes: SEGA’s March 19, 2026 Version 1.3.1 notice says, “You must update to the latest version of the game to use online modes and access DLC.” That notice listed Ver. 1.3.1 for PS5/PS4, Switch/Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S/One, Steam, and Epic. It is a dated version notice, not confirmation that 1.3.1 remains the newest version. Check your console or PC launcher’s update screen for the current patch. SEGA’s Version 1.3.1 notice gives the requirements.
SEGA’s August 25, 2026 AXEL notice adds a separate claim requirement: “An Internet connection is required to claim add-ons.” So an add-on described as free may still require you to connect to claim it, and an outdated game may prevent DLC access.

How to choose the right add-on
- Check your exact game edition and platform. Use the store page for the platform you play on; do not assume DLC listed for Nintendo Switch is available on another platform or edition.
- Separate free updates from paid packs. Free-update content and free downloads are not the same thing as the paid Season Pass or standalone collaboration packs.
- Compare the actual content you want. Review the current pass contents and individual pack prices in your region before deciding; the published six-wave plan is not proof that every announced date or detail remains unchanged.
- Update and connect before claiming. Install the latest game version and use an internet connection to claim add-ons.
