Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Roster: 23 Sonic Characters at Launch, With More Added Later

SEGA counted 23 Sonic-universe characters at launch. Free updates, premium crossovers, and bonus racers are separate categories, and SEGA has not published a single combined current total.

SEGA announced Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds as having the largest character roster in any Sonic racing game. At launch on September 25, 2025, the game included 23 characters from the Sonic universe—but that number does not include every guest, bonus, or later DLC racer. SEGA’s August 2026 update notice confirmed AXEL as a free-update addition, and its official roster directory does not give one combined current total.

What “largest roster” means

On February 12, 2025, SEGA of America described Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds as having “the largest roster of characters in any Sonic racing game.” That was SEGA’s pre-release claim; the announcement did not provide a number or a game-by-game comparison. It is best understood as SEGA’s characterization, not an independently verified count.

At launch, SEGA gave a specific figure: 23 characters from the Sonic universe. That is the base Sonic-universe roster count, not a total of all racers available through guest updates, premium crossover DLC, or bonus content.

How the roster is divided

SEGA’s announcements and racer directory distinguish racers by origin and access route. Those categories matter when comparing counts: a guest character added for free is not part of the launch Sonic-universe figure, and premium crossover content is not the same as the base roster.

What was confirmed at launch

SEGA’s September 25, 2025 launch release called the 23-character Sonic-universe lineup the biggest roster in the series. It also said Hatsune Miku, Joker, and Ichiban Kasuga would arrive through free updates, while Minecraft, SpongeBob SquarePants, and PAC-MAN characters were premium DLC. These are launch-era statements about planned and available content, not a current all-in roster tally.

The June 9, 2025 announcement had described Minecraft’s Steve, Alex, and Creeper as part of a Season Pass wave. It also said the Digital Deluxe Edition included the base game and Season Pass, including Nine, Rusty, and Dread from Sonic Prime. Edition contents can vary by platform or region, so check the listing for the specific version you plan to buy.

What has been added since launch

AXEL joins in a free update

In a notice dated August 25, 2026, SEGA said AXEL would join the roster through a free update on August 26, 2026. The notice also says an internet connection is required to claim add-ons.

There is no single published current total

SEGA’s official racer directory separates main-game racers, Season Pass collaboration racers, free post-launch racers, and bonus racers. The accessible directory text does not give a consolidated number across those categories. Because the roster has expanded beyond the launch lineup, adding the launch figure to announced additions would not establish a reliable current total.

Where to check editions and availability

SEGA lists a physical Standard Edition as well as digital editions. Store availability and edition contents depend on platform and region, so check the current listing for the version you intend to play. The game launched on September 25, 2025; Steam and Epic Games Store versions followed on September 26, 2025.

What the game’s roster claim does—and does not—tell you

The headline claim is useful as a series-level announcement, while the launch count answers a narrower question: how many Sonic-universe characters were in the base roster at launch. Neither figure tells you the current number of every racer across free updates, Season Pass content, premium crossovers, and bonuses. For that, the official directory’s categories are more informative than repeating the launch total as if it were current.
