For these Sonic games, chronological order means original release order—not the order of events in the story. This list uses Japanese release dates consistently and includes the core console and PC action entries for which dates are established here. It is a verified guide to key releases, not an exhaustive list of every mainline Sonic game: SEGA’s franchise history includes many genres and side entries, and does not define an official “mainline” category.
Eight core Sonic releases in chronological order
The dates below are Japanese release dates. The first game arrived earlier in North America, on June 23, 1991; its Japanese release followed on July 26. Using Japanese dates for the list makes the regional basis clear rather than mixing dates from different territories.
- Sonic the Hedgehog — July 26, 1991. SEGA identifies this as the series’ debut.
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2 — November 21, 1992.
- Sonic CD — September 23, 1993. This is included as a core action release, though SEGA describes it as side-story-like; its inclusion shows why “mainline” depends on the definition being used.
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3 — May 27, 1994.
- Sonic & Knuckles — October 18, 1994. It was a separate original release, even though SEGA later packaged it with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
- Sonic Adventure — December 23, 1998. SEGA classifies it as high-speed 3D action.
- Sonic Adventure 2 — June 23, 2001. SEGA also classifies this as high-speed 3D action.
- Sonic Frontiers — November 8, 2022. SEGA describes it as an action adventure. Its listed platforms are PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Steam, and Epic Games.
Why this is not a complete mainline list
SEGA’s history is organized by release year and platform, but it covers the broader franchise—including spin-offs, handheld releases, and tie-ins. It does not supply a definitive mainline-only canon. This list therefore applies an editorial boundary: core console and PC action games, with Sonic CD included despite its side-story-like description. Handheld action entries and other potential candidates are not silently folded in; a complete list would need each one checked and dated against the same rule.
Release chronology also does not establish an in-universe story sequence. The official histories used for these entries support release dates, not a single narrative order for the games.

How to play the early releases
SEGA’s Sonic Origins collection remasters Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic CD, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The last title combines the originally separate Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles releases, so playing the collection’s combined version is not identical to following the original release sequence. Origins covers these four early entries, not the later Adventure games or Sonic Frontiers.

In its 2011 anniversary history, SEGA reported that the original Sonic the Hedgehog had sold more than four million copies worldwide. That is SEGA’s historical figure as reported in 2011, not a current independently verified lifetime total.
