Sony officially revealed PlayStation 5 Pro on September 10, 2024, and released it worldwide on November 7, 2024. Sony positioned it as a higher-performance, disc-less PS5 with an upgraded GPU, faster ray tracing and machine-learning upscaling. Its current recommended price is $899.99 in the U.S., effective April 2, 2026—higher than the $699.99 U.S. price Sony announced at reveal.
What Sony announced about PS5 Pro performance
At the September 10, 2024 reveal, Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, called PS5 Pro “the next step in that evolution” of the PS5 generation. Sony described three main graphics improvements over the PS5 available at the time:

- GPU: Sony said PS5 Pro has 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering.
- Ray tracing: Sony said the console can cast rays at double, and at times triple, the speed of the current PS5.
- Upscaling: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s machine-learning-based, AI-driven upscaling technology, designed to sharpen image clarity.
These are Sony’s claims from its September 10, 2024 announcement, not independent benchmark results. Sony says the goal is higher-fidelity graphics with smoother frame rates at 60FPS, but actual features and results depend on each game; Pro-enhanced features are available only in select enhanced PS5 games.
PS5 Pro release date and what is included
PS5 Pro launched worldwide on November 7, 2024. The announced configuration includes a 2TB SSD, one DualSense wireless controller and Astro’s Playroom pre-installed. The console does not include a disc drive.

Disc drive and physical media
Sony sells the PS5 Disc Drive separately. Sony’s launch guide says it supports PS5 and supported PS4 physical game discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD discs. If your library or buying habits depend on physical media, include the separate drive in your cost comparison.
Size, connectivity and accessories
Sony lists the console at approximately 388 × 89 × 216 mm (width × height × depth) and around 3.1 kg. The reveal also announced Wi-Fi 7 in territories that support the standard, plus VRR and 8K gaming support. Compatibility with existing accessories includes PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore. For setup, Sony’s PS5 Pro getting-started guide covers transferring data from PS4, PS4 Pro or PS5 and installing an M.2 SSD moved from an existing PS5.
PS5 Pro enhanced games and backward compatibility
Sony named games including Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and The Last of Us Part II Remastered as PS5 Pro-enhanced examples. The features and benefits vary by title, so a game’s inclusion does not establish a particular frame rate or improvement in every mode.
PS5 Pro Game Boost may stabilize or improve performance in supported PS5 and backward-compatible PS4 games. Sony said its scope covers more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games, but that does not promise a specific result across the full catalog. Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games is available only for select titles.

Before choosing the Pro for a particular game, check whether that title has Pro-specific enhancements and whether your display can make use of features such as VRR or 8K. Sony’s announcement identifies examples and explains that support varies by game.

Sony’s September 2024 reveal prices are historical launch-announcement prices. On March 27, 2026, Sony published new recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026. The current recommended prices in the listed markets are:

The reveal prices come from Sony’s 2024 announcement; the later recommended prices are from Sony’s March 27, 2026 pricing notice. These are recommended prices, not a guarantee that every retailer charges the same amount. For other territories, Sony directs buyers to local retailers or direct.playstation.com; prices for unlisted countries are not established here.
How to decide whether PS5 Pro fits your setup
- Check your games: Look for Pro-specific support in the titles you play most. Enhancements and outcomes are game-dependent.
- Check your display: Consider whether your screen and setup can use features such as VRR or 8K; availability of Wi-Fi 7 also depends on territory support.
- Account for physical media: If you use discs, factor in the separately sold drive rather than treating it as part of the console package.
- Compare prices in your market: Use Sony’s current recommended price as a reference, then check retailer pricing and availability locally.
Sony also announced a limited 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro bundle quantity of 12,300 units in September 2024. That was the announced quantity, not confirmation of current availability.
