Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is Sony’s new AI upscaling option for the standard PS5. Sony says it improves image detail and stability, but it has not published performance figures or independent comparisons that quantify the difference. The first supported games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, which added QSSR as an optional graphics mode on October 1, 2026.
What QSSR does on PS5
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. It uses AI to upscale a game’s image, aiming to produce clearer detail and a steadier picture. Sony describes it as a new performance tier designed for the standard PS5, using a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for that hardware.
In Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement, Principal Engineer Daniel Craig said QSSR brings “notable improvements to both image detail and image stability” to PS5. That is a qualitative claim: Sony did not provide internal-resolution targets, frame-rate comparisons, latency measurements or a numerical image-quality score.
How much difference does QSSR make?
The expected gains are in fine detail and temporal stability—the consistency of details from frame to frame. In practice, that can mean less shimmer and clearer textures or edges in visually busy scenes. Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” in environments such as Madripoor and Shinjuku in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine details in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5.

Those developer comments describe the intended visual benefits, not a measured result across all games. The size of the improvement will depend on the game and scene. Sony’s announcement does not establish a universal frame-rate boost, and QSSR should not be treated as a promise of higher performance or a fixed resolution increase.
QSSR versus PSSR on PS5 Pro
QSSR brings a version of AI upscaling to standard PS5; PSSR remains Sony’s higher-end option for PS5 Pro. Sony calls PSSR the “gold standard” and presents QSSR as a more performance-conscious implementation for the less powerful hardware—not as feature or image-quality parity with Pro.

| Comparison | QSSR | PSSR |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware target | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Implementation | Streamlined neural network and hand-tuned implementation intended to maximize performance on standard PS5 | Sony describes PSSR as machine-learning AI upscaling; a directly comparable computational-cost figure is not stated |
| Image-quality aim | Sony says it improves image detail and stability on standard PS5 | Sony positions it as the higher-end option; it says PSSR analyzes images pixel by pixel and upscales them |
| Game support | Requires support from an individual game | Sony reported more than 50 PS5 Pro titles using PSSR by February 27, 2026 |
| How it is enabled | Added through a game patch as an additional graphics option in the first supported titles | Support is title-dependent; a universal system-wide switch is not established in the cited information |
Sony’s PS5 Pro launch release describes the console as having a substantially stronger GPU and faster memory than the then-current PS5, helping explain why QSSR is presented as a lighter tier for standard hardware. The PS5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024.

QSSR is not presented as an automatic setting for every PS5 game. A game must add support, typically through a patch, and the option may appear among that title’s graphics modes.

Yes. Sony announced QSSR for the standard PS5, with the two games above patched to offer it on October 1, 2026. Availability is tied to supported games rather than a console-wide setting, so having a standard PS5 alone does not enable QSSR in an unsupported title.
