Sony Brings Back Classic PlayStation Designs to PS5 in April 2025 Update

Sony brought back PS1-, PS2-, PS3- and PS4-inspired PS5 interface designs in an April 2025 update. Here’s how to select one and what to expect.

Sony announced on April 23, 2025, that classic PlayStation interface designs were returning to PS5, with a phased global rollout beginning April 24. The designs evoke the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PS4, and are selected through a new Appearance setting. They customize the PS5 interface; they do not restore the older consoles’ operating systems or add games to the PS5.

What the classic PS5 designs include

Sony calls these options “classic console designs” and “classic console UI customizations.” The four designs represent the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. They give the PS5’s system interface a nostalgic presentation rather than turning the console into one of its predecessors. Sony’s announcement confirms the four designs and the Appearance setting.

The word “themes” is often used as shorthand, but this is not a general-purpose theme marketplace or a promise that every part of the old consoles’ interfaces has been recreated. The April 2025 announcement does not enumerate every screen, sound or startup effect affected by each design. Treat particular animations and sounds as implementation details that may depend on the design and software version, not as a guaranteed full recreation.

How to enable a classic design

Install the system-software update

  1. On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
  2. Select Update System Software if an update is available, then follow the on-screen instructions. Sony’s PS5 system-software support page provides the official update guidance.
  3. After installation, restart the console if prompted.

Choose the appearance

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Appearance.
  3. Choose the PlayStation, PS2, PS3 or PS4 design you want, then return to the home screen to see the customization.

Sony’s announcement identifies Appearance under Settings but does not document every intermediate menu label. If your software uses different labels, check the current system settings rather than assuming the path is identical on every firmware revision.

How the return differs from the 30th-anniversary feature

Sony first introduced nostalgic PS5 UI customizations as a limited-time selection during its 30th-anniversary celebrations in late 2024. On April 23, 2025, it announced their return following positive player feedback. The announcement does not specify a removal date for the earlier selection, so reports that give a precise end date go beyond what Sony’s statement establishes.

The anniversary presentation was also reported with a separate 30th-anniversary look, alongside the four console-generation styles. Sony’s April 2025 announcement specifically confirms the four classic designs; it does not establish that the anniversary option, every boot sequence or every original sound carried over unchanged. Digital Trends’ account of the anniversary experience is useful context for what players saw then, but it is not a guarantee of the later implementation.

Sony announced the April update as a return, but did not make an explicit promise that the feature can never be withdrawn in a future update. The announcement also identifies the rollout by date and does not provide a firmware version number for the feature. It describes a phased global rollout beginning April 24, 2025, not a simultaneous release to every console.

What the designs do not change

  • They do not install or unlock PS1, PS2, PS3 or PS4 games.
  • They do not make the PS5 run an older console’s operating system or add emulation.
  • They do not change a game’s graphics, gameplay or performance; the announced feature concerns the PS5 system interface.

Sony’s announcement does not identify a model-specific restriction for the classic designs. It also does not establish their exact availability on every later firmware build or in every region, so check the console’s current Appearance settings if the option is missing.

Audio Focus is a separate feature in the update

The April 2025 update also introduced Audio Focus, an accessibility-oriented setting designed to make softer sounds easier to hear through headphones or a headset. It is separate from the classic interface designs and is not required to use them.

  • Presets: Boost Low Pitch, Boost Voices, Boost High Pitch and Boost Quiet Sounds.
  • Intensity: Weak, Medium or Strong for each preset.
  • Settings path: Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus; it can also be accessed through the Control Center.
  • Connection limit: Sony says it works with headphones connected by USB or the analog jack, but not HDMI audio routed through a TV, AV receiver or soundbar.

Troubleshooting the classic appearance

Appearance is missing

  1. Check Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings for an available update.
  2. Install the update and restart the PS5 if prompted.
  3. Reconnect the console to PlayStation Network, then look for Appearance in Settings again.
  4. If it is still unavailable, consult PlayStation Support for current update guidance. Use official Sony update files only; do not install unofficial firmware.

A startup sound or animation is absent

That alone does not show that the appearance selection failed. Sony’s April announcement confirms the classic designs but does not guarantee a specific startup sound or animation for each one. Check the selected design and your TV, headset, receiver or soundbar volume and audio routing. The startup presentation remembered from the 2024 anniversary feature should not be assumed to be identical in every later implementation.
