Sony INZONE M9 and M3: What the 2022 PS5 Monitors Offer on PC—and Their 2026 Status

Sony’s first INZONE monitors were built for PS5 convenience without being PS5-exclusive. Here is what the documented M9 offers, what remains unverified about the M3, and how the originals fit Sony’s 2026 lineup.

Sony’s July 4, 2022 INZONE launch introduced two 27-inch gaming monitors: the INZONE M9, a 4K HDR model with up to 144Hz over DisplayPort, and the INZONE M3, positioned as its faster, lower-tier companion for competitive gaming. They were designed to integrate conveniently with PlayStation 5, but neither monitor is PS5-exclusive; Sony also supports use with gaming computers and other platforms.

The original M9 is the model with a fully documented specification set. Its PS5-friendly features include HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz support, Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode. As of August 18, 2026, Sony’s U.S. store lists newer INZONE displays rather than the original M9 and M3, so the 2022 products should be treated as legacy, used, refurbished or residual-stock options.

At a glance: M9 versus M3

Model Best fit What is established
INZONE M9 (SDM-U27M90) PS5 4K gaming and premium PC use 27-inch 4K IPS LCD, HDR10/HLG, DisplayHDR 600, Full Array Local Dimming, 144Hz DisplayPort and up to 120Hz HDMI
INZONE M3 (SDM-F27M30) Competitive gaming and lower-GPU-demand setups Sony’s companion model to the M9; the complete launch resolution, refresh-rate, HDR and price table is not preserved in the currently accessible primary documentation

The launch report described the M9 at $899.99 in the United States. That was a July 2022 launch price, not a current price guarantee. (TechTimes, July 4, 2022)

What Sony announced in 2022

Sony introduced INZONE as a gaming brand spanning PlayStation 5 and PC use. The M9 and M3 were monitors rather than proprietary PS5 accessories: they accept standard video inputs and can be used with computers, consoles and other compatible sources. Sony’s support documentation identifies the original models as SDM-U27M90 (M9) and SDM-F27M30 (M3). (Sony support)

INZONE M9 specifications

4K IPS panel and refresh rates

The M9 uses a 27-inch IPS LCD panel at 3840 × 2160. Sony lists a maximum of 144Hz through DisplayPort and up to 120Hz through HDMI. The 144Hz figure therefore describes PC DisplayPort operation; a PS5 connected by HDMI tops out at the monitor’s listed 120Hz range.

HDR and local dimming

It supports HDR10 and HLG and carries DisplayHDR 600 certification. Its Full Array Local Dimming can improve contrast by controlling zones behind the panel, but it can also produce blooming or halos around bright objects on dark backgrounds. Sony advises reducing or disabling local dimming if blooming is distracting; the trade-off is a flatter, more washed-out-looking image. (M9 specifications; Sony support guidance)

Response time and variable refresh rate

Sony states a 1ms response time in Faster mode. That is a manufacturer response-time claim tied to an overdrive setting, not a promise of zero motion blur. If Faster produces ghosting or inverse ghosting, Sony recommends Fast or Standard instead. Variable-refresh support includes Adaptive-Sync over DisplayPort, NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible operation and HDMI 2.1 VRR.

Inputs, USB and mounting

  • One DisplayPort 1.4 input
  • Two HDMI 2.1 inputs
  • One USB-C input with DisplayPort Alt Mode
  • USB-B upstream and three USB-A downstream ports
  • 3.5mm headphone output
  • 100 × 100mm VESA mounting pattern

The M9 also includes a built-in KVM function. With the monitor’s USB connections configured, one keyboard, mouse and headset can switch between two computers or between a computer and a console according to the selected video input. (Sony M9 specifications; Sony support)

What can the M3 be verified to offer?

The M3 was announced alongside the M9 as the lower-tier, faster-refresh-oriented companion for players who prioritize competitive gaming. Sony’s currently accessible support pages confirm the SDM-F27M30 model and compatibility with computers and gaming consoles, but they do not preserve enough primary-source information to state its original resolution, refresh rate, HDR certification or U.S. launch price responsibly. Retailer listings without a clearly identified market and date are not a reliable substitute for those launch figures.

What the PS5 features actually do

Auto HDR Tone Mapping

When the M9 is connected to a PS5, the console can identify the display and optimize HDR settings during setup. This is a calibration convenience; it does not mean every game is rendered in native HDR or eliminate all differences between games.

Auto Genre Picture Mode

The monitor can switch picture behavior between game-oriented and cinema-oriented content. It is an automatic mode change, not an exclusive PS5 video format.

HDMI 2.1 VRR, ALLM and CEC

The M9 supports HDMI 2.1 Variable Refresh Rate, Auto Low Latency Mode and HDMI CEC (Sony calls the latter Control for HDMI). These features can reduce tearing, select a low-latency mode and coordinate compatible device controls. A PS5 game still needs to support the relevant resolution and frame rate: the monitor cannot make a title run at 4K/120Hz when the game, console setting or signal does not provide it.

Using the monitors with a PC

For a direct PC connection, Sony recommends DisplayPort 1.4 for DisplayPort use, an HDMI 2.1 Ultra High Speed cable for HDMI, or a USB-C cable that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Install current graphics drivers, select the desired refresh rate in the operating system and game, and use a direct connection while troubleshooting. Docks, converters and signal adapters can prevent high-resolution or high-refresh modes from appearing.

INZONE Hub on Windows

INZONE Hub supports the original M9 and M3 on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It can manage monitor and headset settings, assign picture modes to applications or games and adjust device options. The monitor’s rear joystick and on-screen menu remain available without a Windows PC; PS5 automatic features operate through the console/display connection rather than INZONE Hub.

A practical first-time setup

  1. Connect the graphics card directly with DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1 or USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode as appropriate.
  2. Install the latest graphics driver and choose the monitor’s intended resolution and refresh rate in Windows.
  3. Install INZONE Hub if you need software picture-mode or device controls.
  4. Connect the USB-B upstream cable and configure KVM assignments if you want the monitor to switch USB peripherals between sources.
  5. For PS5, use an HDMI 2.1 Ultra High Speed cable and enable compatible 4K, 120Hz and VRR options in the console and game.

Sony notes that the necessary DisplayPort, HDMI and USB cables may not all be supplied because the required type and length depend on the setup. (Sony cable and setup guidance)

Common problems and fixes

  • No picture or an unstable signal: update the graphics driver, check that the cable meets the required standard and test a direct connection without a dock or converter.
  • High refresh rate missing on PC: use DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.1 as appropriate, then select the mode in the operating system and game.
  • VRR flicker or shaking: enable VRR for HDMI, or Adaptive-Sync for DisplayPort and USB-C. A brief signal-scanning message or black screen can appear when the refresh frequency changes.
  • Blooming: lower or disable local dimming on the M9, accepting reduced contrast.
  • Ghosting or inverse ghosting: change the response-time setting from Faster to Fast or Standard.
  • USB peripherals do not switch: verify the KVM assignment, USB upstream connection and selected video input.
  • Firmware update required: update the original M9 through INZONE Hub on a Windows computer with both a video connection and USB data connection attached.

Availability in 2026

The July 2022 report’s statement that the M9 was available for purchase described launch availability. As checked on August 18, 2026, Sony’s U.S. INZONE monitor store no longer lists the original M9 or M3 among its active products. The page instead showed newer models, including the M9 II at a displayed sale price of $749.99 (reduced from $949.99), the M10S at $799.99 (reduced from $899.99), and the M10S II at $1,099.99. Sale prices can change, and these are not the 2022 M9 and M3. (Sony U.S. INZONE store)

For a used or refurbished original M9, check firmware, dead pixels, local-dimming behavior, included power adapter and cables, warranty coverage and the seller’s return policy. Do not pay near-new pricing for a legacy M9 when a current M9 II is available at a similar or lower listed price.

Who should consider the original M9?

  • Choose it when you specifically want 27-inch 4K, HDMI 2.1, PS5 4K/120Hz capability, HDR with local dimming and a PC powerful enough to drive 4K at high frame rates.
  • Reconsider it if you mainly play competitive PC games where extreme refresh rate matters more than 4K, dislike blooming, or need a current product with active store support.
  • Consider a current M9 II for a similar 4K-focused Sony experience with current warranty and availability.
  • Consider the M10S or M10S II if OLED contrast and very high-refresh competitive PC gaming matter more than 4K resolution; they are different current products, not replacements for the original M3 specification-for-specification.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
