That made Sony the clear leader in Anaqua’s comparison of major gaming companies—but it does not establish that Sony currently leads every company in the industry, owns the most valuable patents, or received 117 granted patents.
What Sony led—and what the figures count
Anaqua published its comparison on September 12, 2024, describing Sony Interactive Entertainment as the leading filer among the gaming companies examined. Because the article says Sony filed 117 applications “last year,” the comparison year is 2023. The figures are reported counts from Anaqua’s AcclaimIP analysis, not independently reconstructed totals. Anaqua’s report identifies the comparison as involving global gaming companies, but the accessible account does not fully document its company universe or counting rules.

On those reported counts, Sony had about 5.3 times Activision’s total and 5.6 times EA’s. Anaqua described Sony’s count as more than five times that of its closest competitors. These are patent applications, not a tally of issued patents or proof that each filing became an enforceable right.
Why the comparison is not a definitive industry ranking
The report’s headline is striking, but its publicly described methodology leaves important questions unanswered: which companies were included, how their legal entities and subsidiaries were consolidated, what search terms or patent classifications defined “gaming,” which jurisdictions were counted, and whether multiple filings for the same invention were grouped into patent families. The available account also does not make clear whether the count represents individual applications, global family groupings, or another measure.

Those choices can materially change a leaderboard. A broad definition may capture platform technologies such as streaming, controllers, VR, networking, and moderation systems, even if they are not exclusively used for games. A narrow definition may better isolate game-specific inventions but miss enabling technology. Publishers, hardware makers, platform holders, and general technology companies also have different reasons and opportunities to file patents.
Patent publication timing adds another limit. Anaqua’s mobile and handheld analysis covered filings from 2001 through 2024, but the report warned that figures from 2021 onward were temporarily depressed because some applications had not yet been made public. GamesBeat’s account of the analysis reproduces that caveat and the technology examples. Recent filing-year comparisons can therefore be incomplete even before other methodology questions are considered.

What technology areas appear in the report
Mobile and handheld gaming
The analysis treats mobile and handheld play as a long-running area of patent activity. Relevant concepts can span portable hardware, connected accessories and controllers, remote play, and experiences that move between a home console and a portable device. A patent filing in this broad area does not by itself show that Sony plans to release a particular device or feature.
Streaming and latency
Cloud and remote gaming rely on delivering playable video and input response over networks with changing bandwidth and delay. Patent concepts in this space may concern video encoding, buffering, bandwidth adaptation, asset delivery, interoperability among devices, or transitions between locally rendered and streamed play.

One Sony example cited by GamesBeat is published application JP2024111022 A, described as a system that adjusts video encoding in real time according to a player’s available bandwidth. It is an application example, not evidence that Sony commercialized the exact system or that it issued as an enforceable patent.
Cybersecurity and player safety
The report also points to technology related to disruptive behavior in online play. GamesBeat cites published application US20240017177 A1, described as a system that flags disruptive conduct during gameplay and supplies video clips to moderators for review. That description is not evidence that a product using the system exists or that a patent has issued; nor does a filing show that harassment or moderation problems have been solved.

Why Sony might file across these areas
Sony Interactive Entertainment operates across consoles, games, online services, accessories, VR, and remote-play experiences. A broad platform ecosystem creates more opportunities to seek protection for technologies that connect hardware, software, networks, and player-facing features. It is reasonable to interpret Sony’s filings as preserving options or supporting defensive protection, licensing discussions, or competitive positioning, but Anaqua’s report does not establish the company’s internal motives.
A filing can also preserve an option without ever becoming a consumer feature. A company may pursue protection for an idea that changes during development, remains unused, or has value mainly in negotiations or as a defensive asset. The count alone cannot tell readers which of those outcomes applies to Sony’s applications.

Why application volume is not the same as patent strength
Several distinct measures are often conflated in patent headlines:
- Applications: Filings seeking protection. They may be amended, abandoned, or rejected.
- Patent families: Related filings that seek protection for the same invention across jurisdictions; counting every filing can produce a different total from counting families.
- Granted patents: Applications that completed examination and resulted in granted rights.
- Active patents: Granted rights that remain in force, rather than expiring or lapsing.
- Patent quality and impact: Questions of claim scope, novelty, legal strength, citations, and relevance to products or revenue.
The patent claims—not a headline or abstract—define the legal scope. Rights are territorial and time-limited, and a granted patent may still have little bearing on a particular product. Anaqua’s patent-analytics materials discuss scoring dimensions such as technical, citation, and legal factors, illustrating why a raw application count is only one possible signal. Anaqua’s Acclaim Analyst data sheet describes those analytics; it does not turn filing volume into a standalone measure of innovation.
Does Sony still lead in 2026?
The available evidence does not establish a 2025 or 2026 gaming-company ranking. The directly relevant Anaqua comparison was published in September 2024 and concerns the preceding year. Anaqua’s separate analysis of USPTO activity uses a December 1, 2023–November 30, 2024 window and reports patenting across organizations generally, not a new gaming-company leaderboard. That broader USPTO analysis cannot verify that Sony remained the leading gaming filer.
Accordingly, the supportable statement is that Sony led Anaqua’s reported comparison of major gaming companies for 2023. The figures do not establish that Sony had the largest active patent portfolio, the most valuable gaming patents, or the strongest innovation record; nor do they show that a specific filing caused a feature in a PlayStation product.
