Bottom line: A forum statement attributed to hardware leaker KeplerL2 claims Sony’s rumored PS6 handheld could be slightly faster than Xbox Series S in conventional rasterized graphics and substantially stronger in ray tracing and path tracing. No public benchmark, final specification sheet, release date, price, game lineup, or Sony confirmation establishes that claim.
What the PS6 handheld leak actually says
Reports from HotHardware, Games.GG and MP1st attribute the comparison to hardware leaker KeplerL2. The statement reportedly appeared as a NeoGAF post, not in a Sony presentation, regulatory filing, product page or published benchmark.
The wording is deliberately broad: the rumored handheld is said to be “a bit ahead” of Xbox Series S in rasterization and “massively ahead” in ray tracing and path tracing. No percentages, test games, clocks, resolutions, frame rates, power limits or measurement methodology were supplied. Those phrases should therefore be treated as an unverified performance characterization, not a result that can be reproduced.

What rasterization, ray tracing and path tracing mean
Rasterization
Rasterization converts 3D geometry, textures and lighting data into the pixels displayed on a screen. It remains the main rendering method in most games. “A bit ahead in raster” could refer to theoretical shader throughput, a particular workload or sustained performance at a handheld power limit. It does not say that both systems would render the same resolution or visual settings.

A handheld might render internally at 720p, 900p or 1080p and upscale to a small, high-density display. Xbox Series S is commonly connected to a television, so comparing the two without matching internal resolution and image-quality targets would be misleading.
Ray tracing
Hardware-accelerated ray tracing calculates effects such as reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion and portions of global illumination. Xbox Series S supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, but Microsoft does not claim that every game uses it or that ray-traced modes have uniform resolution or frame-rate targets. See the official Xbox product page.
Path tracing
Path tracing traces many light paths to approximate physically realistic illumination and is substantially more demanding than typical selective ray-traced effects. A newer architecture could make path-tracing hardware more efficient, yet technical support would not guarantee playable path-traced games on battery power. The leak provides no workload, denoising method, resolution, frame rate or power target.
The verified Xbox Series S reference point
Microsoft publishes a concrete baseline for the console being used as the comparison target:
| Component | Official specification |
|---|---|
| CPU | Eight custom Zen 2 cores |
| CPU clock | 3.8GHz, or 3.6GHz with simultaneous multithreading |
| GPU | 4 teraflops, 20 RDNA 2 compute units |
| GPU clock | 1.565GHz |
| Memory | 10GB GDDR6 on a 128-bit bus |
| Bandwidth | 8GB at 224GB/s; 2GB at 56GB/s |
| Target output | 1440p |
| Performance target | Up to 120 frames per second in supported content |
| Ray tracing | Hardware accelerated |
These figures come from Xbox’s official Series S specifications. They describe a fixed-power console, not the performance a future portable chip would necessarily deliver.
Rumored “Canis” hardware is not a confirmed specification sheet
MP1st reports an alleged design codenamed Canis. The figures below remain unconfirmed:

| Reported item | Rumored figure |
|---|---|
| CPU | Four Zen 6c cores plus two Zen 6 low-power cores |
| GPU | 16 RDNA 5 compute units |
| Memory | 24GB LPDDR5X |
| Memory interface | 192-bit |
| Process and die size | TSMC 3nm, 135mm² |
The report does not establish GPU or CPU frequencies, effective memory bandwidth, total device power, cooling capacity, operating-system reservations, battery size, screen resolution, storage, docking support, backward compatibility, price or release timing. Compute-unit counts cannot be compared directly across GPU generations, and teraflops alone are an unreliable predictor of game performance.

Why a future handheld could win some workloads
A newer design might provide more performance per watt through a newer GPU architecture, more capable ray-tracing units, improved compression and scheduling, machine-learning or reconstruction hardware, and a game engine tuned for the device. A lower-resolution portable display can also make an internally lower-resolution image acceptable.
Those advantages compete with portable constraints:
- Lower sustained power than a mains-powered console.
- Smaller cooling hardware and possible thermal throttling.
- Battery-life requirements that may force lower clocks.
- Shared memory between CPU and GPU.
- Different handheld, plugged-in and possible docked profiles.
The defensible inference is that newer architecture could compensate for lower power in selected workloads. It is not proof of higher sustained performance in every game.
Why “beats Series S” cannot yet be benchmarked
A fair comparison would need identical or clearly stated conditions for:
- GPU and CPU clocks, sustained wattage and thermal limits.
- Memory bandwidth, latency, compression and allocation.
- Internal and output resolution, graphics settings and ray-tracing options.
- Game version, patch, engine and developer optimization.
- Upscaling method, frame-generation mode and latency.
- At least 20–60 minutes of sustained play rather than a short peak result.
Without those details, “faster” could mean higher frame rates at a lower internal resolution, better ray-traced effects at similar speed, lower power for the same result, or only a theoretical GPU advantage.

What FSR 5 and PSSR 3 would—and would not—change
Leak coverage also links the handheld to alleged future versions of AMD FSR and Sony’s PSSR. AMD describes FSR as an upscaling and frame-generation technology for supported games in its FidelityFX documentation. These features require software implementation; a named technology is not evidence of final image quality.
Keep three claims separate:
- Rendering performance: how quickly hardware creates the base image.
- Upscaling quality: how convincingly a lower-resolution image is reconstructed.
- Frame generation: synthesized frames that can increase displayed smoothness but do not provide the same input-latency benefit as genuinely rendered frames.
The leak supplies no controlled comparison with DLSS 4.5. A stronger upscaler can make a lower internal resolution look sharper, but it cannot restore every detail that native rendering would produce.
What the claim could mean for actual games
- Higher average frame rates at the same internal resolution in some titles.
- Comparable frame rates at lower power or with a smaller cooling system.
- More convincing ray-traced lighting as an optional mode.
- Higher-quality output at the handheld’s native display resolution.
- Better results in games with a dedicated handheld profile and reconstruction support.
It does not establish that every PS6 game would outperform its Series S version, that the device could render at Series S television resolutions, that it would match a future full-size PS6, or that battery performance would equal a plugged-in or docked mode. A product could also be cancelled, redesigned or repositioned before release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCurrent products provide context, not proof of the rumor
Readers deciding what to use now should distinguish established products from an unannounced device:
- Xbox Series S: a fixed, console-optimized baseline with Quick Resume and support for up to 120fps in supported content; it is not portable and has no disc drive.
- Steam Deck: a portable PC platform with Steam integration and broad community support, but game compatibility varies and it is not a PlayStation hardware comparison.
- ROG Ally X: a Windows handheld offering access to multiple PC stores and higher configurable power profiles, with corresponding battery, heat and fan-noise trade-offs.
- PlayStation Portal: primarily a remote-play device, not a local PS5- or PS6-class rendering system, so it is not a performance substitute for the rumored handheld.
Verdict: technically plausible, currently unverified
A newer Sony portable could plausibly exceed Xbox Series S in efficiency or in selected ray-tracing workloads. But the KeplerL2 statement is an attributed forum claim without public tests, final silicon, clocks, power data or software demonstrations. Until Sony announces the product or independent testing supplies matched conditions, “beats Xbox Series S” should be read as a claim about possible graphics architecture—not an established buying or performance verdict.
