Sony has not announced the PS6 or a new native PlayStation handheld. The reported specifications come from hardware leaker KeplerL2 and were relayed by VideoCardz: a future PS6 could use 30GB of GDDR7 memory, while a separate handheld could use 24GB of LPDDR5X. If accurate, the console configuration would offer substantially more capacity than the current PS5, but these figures do not establish the products’ performance, price, or release date.

What the PS6 and handheld memory rumor actually claims

The two alleged devices should be treated as separate, unconfirmed claims rather than a Sony specification sheet.

  • PS6: 30GB of GDDR7 memory, reportedly arranged using 3GB modules in a ten-module clamshell configuration, with a 160-bit memory bus and 32Gbps memory speed.
  • Next-generation handheld: 24GB of LPDDR5X memory. The device has also been associated with the unofficial codename “Canis,” but Sony has not confirmed that name or the product itself.

VideoCardz attributes the figures to KeplerL2, with the handheld claim connected to a NeoGAF discussion. HotHardware and other outlets subsequently reported or analyzed the claims. Neither Sony nor an official technical document has confirmed the capacities, memory technologies, codenames, bus widths, or launch plans.

Rumor coverage has also mentioned possible 2027 or 2028 timing, but that is not a scheduled release window. Console designs can change before mass production, and Sony has not announced a PS6 date.

The alleged 30GB PS6 configuration

The reported 30GB figure is unusual because console memory capacities more commonly use configurations that align with standard memory-chip densities. The alleged use of 3GB modules could explain the number. A clamshell arrangement generally places memory packages on both sides of a memory interface, or combines packages around the same interface, to reach a desired capacity without making the bus wider.

That approach can provide more capacity within a particular board layout, but it may also increase manufacturing complexity, validation work, cooling demands, and cost. The ten-module arrangement remains a rumor, not confirmed evidence of Sony’s final motherboard design.

What bandwidth would the reported numbers produce?

If the alleged 160-bit bus operates at 32Gbps per pin, the theoretical bandwidth is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

160 bits ÷ 8 × 32Gbps = 640GB/s

That calculation is a mathematical consequence of the reported specifications. It does not independently verify that the PS6 exists or that Sony will use this configuration in a retail system.

How it compares with PS5 and PS5 Pro

System Memory Memory type Status
PS5 16GB GDDR6 Official
PS5 Pro 16GB plus 2GB GDDR6 plus DDR5 Official
Alleged PS6 30GB GDDR7 Rumored
Alleged handheld 24GB LPDDR5X Rumored

Compared with the PS5’s official 16GB GDDR6 pool, 30GB would represent an 87.5% increase in nominal capacity:

(30 - 16) ÷ 16 × 100 = 87.5%

The comparison with PS5 Pro requires more care. Sony lists 16GB of GDDR6 alongside 2GB of DDR5; that is not the same architecture as a single 30GB GDDR7 pool. In every case, nominal capacity is not identical to the amount available to games. The operating system, firmware, background services, video buffers, and developer allocation policies all consume or reserve memory.

The PS5 is commonly cited at approximately 448GB/s of memory bandwidth. Against that figure, the rumored 640GB/s would be about 42.9% higher:

That is a bandwidth comparison, not a performance prediction. It should not be described as an 11% increase against the usual PS5 bandwidth figure.

What GDDR7 could change

GDDR7 could give a future PlayStation more throughput without requiring an extremely wide memory bus. Higher bandwidth may help a GPU move high-resolution textures, geometry data, ray-tracing structures, and machine-learning workloads more efficiently.

A larger memory pool could also give developers more room for:

  • Higher-resolution textures and larger geometry datasets.
  • More complex ray-tracing acceleration structures.
  • Reconstruction, denoising, frame-generation, and other AI-assisted rendering techniques.
  • Open-world streaming systems that keep more assets available at once.
  • Reduced pressure to stream data constantly from the SSD.

However, GDDR7 alone would not guarantee higher frame rates, native 4K rendering, better ray tracing, faster CPU performance, shorter loading times, or more detailed games. Those outcomes would depend on the GPU architecture, CPU, memory controller, cache hierarchy, compression technology, storage pipeline, software tools, power budget, and cooling system.

Capacity and bandwidth solve different problems. More capacity lets a system keep more data resident; more bandwidth lets it move data faster. A game can benefit from one without being limited by the other.

Why the alleged handheld could use 24GB

The reported handheld figure is 24GB of LPDDR5X, not 24GB of GDDR7. LPDDR5X is designed around lower power consumption and would likely serve as shared memory for both the handheld’s CPU and GPU.

That makes the number plausible as a premium handheld capacity, but it does not make it directly comparable with 30GB of dedicated-style GDDR7 in a home console. ASUS’s ROG Ally X specifications, for example, list 24GB of LPDDR5 memory in a 12GB-by-2 configuration. That comparison demonstrates that 24GB is a possible high-end handheld capacity; it does not verify Sony’s rumored device.

Twenty-four gigabytes could give a handheld more headroom for current-generation assets, operating-system functions, reconstruction technologies, and future game engines. It could also reduce the risk that the handheld becomes an extremely restrictive memory target for developers.

Would 24GB let the handheld run PS6 games unchanged?

No. Memory capacity alone cannot establish console-equivalent performance. A handheld would also need enough GPU compute and ray-tracing performance, a capable CPU, sufficient memory bandwidth, workable battery life, and an acceptable thermal design.

Even with 24GB, handheld versions might use:

  • Lower output resolution or more aggressive reconstruction.
  • Reduced texture quality.
  • Simpler lighting and ray-tracing effects.
  • Shorter draw distances and smaller crowds.
  • Lower frame-rate targets.

The device could potentially share games, engines, and assets with a home console while using a different performance profile. The reported 24GB could reduce memory-related compromises, but it would not prove that the handheld could run PS6 games at console-equivalent settings.

What this could mean for PlayStation developers

A relatively well-equipped handheld might allow Sony to build a closer software relationship between its home console and portable platforms. Developers could share more code and assets, and ports might require fewer fundamental changes than they would on a severely memory-constrained device.

That is an inference, not a confirmed Sony strategy. The handheld could still become the limiting platform if its GPU, CPU, battery, or cooling system is substantially weaker. More memory does not remove the need for separate resolution, effects, and performance profiles. If Sony required every game to support the handheld, developers might still design around its lower power envelope.

A 24GB design could also raise the device’s bill of materials and retail price. Sony would have to balance memory headroom against battery capacity, cooling, storage, processor capability, and the price customers will accept.

The cost and pricing question

More memory is commercially significant, especially as Sony’s current hardware is already positioned across a wide price range. Sony’s U.S. recommended prices effective April 2, 2026 were $649.99 for PS5, $599.99 for the Digital Edition, $899.99 for PS5 Pro, and $249.99 for PlayStation Portal, according to its official price update.

HotHardware discussed speculation that the reported memory design could add more than $100 to the console’s bill of materials. That specific estimate is not independently established by primary evidence and should not be treated as a predicted retail-price increase.

If the rumor is accurate, Sony could respond to memory costs through a higher launch price, lower margins, a smaller SSD, different capacities across models, a less ambitious processor or GPU, or a later launch. The memory figure alone cannot tell us which trade-off Sony would choose.

Do not confuse the rumored handheld with PlayStation Portal

PlayStation Portal is an existing PS5 Remote Play device, not a confirmed native next-generation handheld. Sony’s compatibility documentation describes its core function as connecting to a compatible PS5 for Remote Play.

That makes Portal fundamentally different from the rumored handheld. The alleged new device could, in theory, run games locally, but Sony has not confirmed whether it would be a standalone console, a streaming product, a hybrid device, or something else.

What remains unknown

Until Sony makes an official announcement, readers should consider all of the following unresolved:

  • The PS6 and handheld’s existence and final product names.
  • Whether “Orion” and “Canis” are genuine internal codenames.
  • The CPU and GPU architectures.
  • The final memory capacities, bus widths, speeds, and usable allocations.
  • Storage capacity and performance.
  • Power consumption, cooling, battery life, and form factor.
  • Backward compatibility and cross-save features.
  • Whether the handheld can run games locally.
  • Disc support for the home console.
  • Retail pricing and regional availability.
  • Launch timing.

Rumors that mention 30GB, 32GB, 36GB, or 48GB should be treated as separate unconfirmed claims rather than evidence of a finalized specification. The specific 30GB figure in this report should remain attributed to KeplerL2 through secondary coverage.

Bottom line

The reported numbers are technically plausible, but they are not confirmed PlayStation specifications. A 30GB GDDR7 design would provide 87.5% more nominal memory capacity than the PS5 and, under the reported bus and speed, theoretically deliver about 640GB/s of bandwidth—roughly 43% above the PS5’s commonly cited 448GB/s.

The alleged 24GB LPDDR5X handheld could offer useful memory headroom and make cross-platform development easier, but shared memory, lower power, weaker graphics hardware, and battery limits would still define its performance. For now, the rumor indicates what Sony might be prioritizing in a future platform—not what the PS6 or a new handheld will actually deliver.
