Sony may be reviving Ape Escape, but the only current claim is an unconfirmed insider report—not a PlayStation announcement. In a report published October 2, 2026, Wccftech said Nate The Hate indicated the series was coming back and that Team Asobi was not making the project. The report does not establish a developer, platform, format, or release window.
Is Sony bringing Ape Escape back?
It is possible, but it is not confirmed. Wccftech’s October 2, 2026 report attributed the revival claim to insider Nate The Hate. Wccftech also noted that Sony had not commented. There is no official announcement in the available reporting, so there is no confirmed game to describe as greenlit, scheduled, or in development.
The report does not say whether the possible project would be a new game, remake, or remaster. It also does not establish its developer, target platforms, scope, or timing. Those details should be treated as unknown rather than filled in from the franchise’s history.
Who is reportedly making it—and who is not?
According to Wccftech’s account of Nate The Hate’s comments, Team Asobi is not developing the reported project. The insider also said Bandai Namco was not involved “to his knowledge,” while indicating he would need to check further on Bandai Namco. That second point is explicitly tentative, not a definitive confirmation of the company’s absence.

Shuhei Yoshida, who was an executive producer on the original game, has said that some original Ape Escape team members remain at Team Asobi. That historical personnel connection does not mean Asobi is involved in the rumored project; the report says the opposite.
What happened to Japan Studio?
Japan Studio developed the original Ape Escape series, but Sony reorganized the studio in 2021. Sony Interactive Entertainment said, in a statement quoted by VGC, that “JAPAN Studio will be re-centered to Team ASOBI, the creative team behind Astro’s PLAYROOM, allowing the team to focus on a single vision and build on the popularity of Astro’s PLAYROOM.” External production, software localization, and IP management functions were to be concentrated in PlayStation Studios’ global functions.

That change explains why it would be misleading to name Japan Studio as the developer of a possible new entry. It does not reveal which team, if any, is working on the reported project.
Why Ape Escape stood out on PlayStation
The original Ape Escape launched on the first PlayStation in 1999 and made the DualShock’s two analog sticks central to play: players used them to control gadgets while pursuing and catching monkeys. Yoshida recalled the starting point in a GamesRadar+ / Retro Gamer interview: “Wanted to create a 3D, open-field, sandbox game like Mario 64, and they came up with the idea of capturing monkeys. So that came first.”

The distinctive control idea and the series’ playful pursuit-and-capture premise are part of its legacy, but they do not tell us what form a revival might take. The last new series entry identified in the report was PlayStation Move Ape Escape in 2010—about 16 years before the October 2026 report.
