Yes—Sony’s current US listings show the PS5 Digital Edition Slim with an 825GB SSD instead of the 1TB drive used by the earlier Slim Digital model. The cut does not apply to the disc-equipped PS5 Slim, which remains listed with 1TB.
What changed?
Sony’s US PS5 comparison page now identifies the two Slim configurations differently:

The earlier Slim Digital Edition launched with a 1TB SSD, according to Sony’s 2023 Slim announcement. The newer digital revision therefore removes 175GB of advertised capacity—about 17.5%—while the disc model keeps its 1TB specification.

This is not a new PlayStation generation
The change is a model revision, not a new console generation. Sony’s current digital product page identifies the smaller-storage system as part of the CFI-2100 model group. The original launch PS5 also used an 825GB SSD, but the important comparison here is the earlier 1TB Slim Digital Edition versus the revised 825GB Slim Digital Edition.
The PS5 Pro is a separate, more expensive product with 2TB of storage. It should not be treated as a storage-only alternative.
How much space is actually available?
Neither “825GB” nor “1TB” means that much free space is available for games. Sony reserves part of the SSD for system software and other functions, so the usable amount is lower and can vary with system software and configuration. Sony does not provide a single permanently applicable usable-space figure for every revision.
The practical difference remains meaningful: the 825GB model starts with 175GB less advertised capacity. That could be roughly one large game installation or several smaller ones, but game sizes, patches, texture packs and duplicated PS4/PS5 versions vary too much for a fixed game count.

Digital buyers feel the limitation most directly because their games must be downloaded and installed. Disc ownership does not eliminate the issue: PS5 disc games generally install data to the SSD, and the disc must remain inserted to play. See Sony’s disc-game installation guide.
Did Sony keep the price the same?
There is no single safe “same price” answer without specifying the model and date. Sony’s current US Direct listing shows the 825GB Digital Edition at $599 and the 1TB disc model at $649. They are not equivalent products because one lacks an included disc drive.
These figures also should not be confused with Sony’s separate US price announcement of August 20, 2025, which listed the standard PS5 at $549.99 and the Digital Edition at $499.99 effective August 21, 2025. Console pricing has changed since then. Sony has not, in the cited material, explained why the storage reduction occurred, so claims about NAND costs, tariffs or “shrinkflation” remain interpretation rather than confirmed Sony rationale.

Choose the 825GB Digital Edition if:
- You keep a small rotating selection of games installed.
- You are comfortable deleting and redownloading games.
- You plan to add a compatible M.2 SSD.
- You primarily buy digital games and the current price suits your budget.
- You use supported PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming games and have reliable broadband.
Prefer the 1TB Disc Edition if:
- You want physical games or Blu-ray playback immediately.
- You want 175GB more advertised storage without installing an accessory.
- You buy used or discounted discs.
- You expect to keep many large PS5 games installed.
- You want to avoid buying and pairing an optional drive later.
The 1TB disc model is only $50 more than the current 825GB digital listing, though prices and deals vary. Buying the digital console and Sony’s optional drive at the observed $79 price would total about $678 before tax, and still would not increase SSD capacity.

Storage expansion options
Install an internal M.2 SSD
A compatible M.2 SSD is the best upgrade for people who want to store and play PS5 games directly from expanded storage. Sony supports capacity up to 8TB, but the drive must meet its performance, size and heatsink requirements, and the console should be updated to the latest system software. Use Sony’s official compatibility guidance; not every inexpensive NVMe drive will work.
Use external USB storage
Compatible SuperSpeed USB storage can hold PS5 and PS4 games. PS4 games can be played directly from the external drive, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back to the console’s internal SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can be played. Sony lists a capacity range of 250GB to 8TB.
USB extended storage cannot be connected through a USB hub, and multiple extended-storage drives cannot be connected simultaneously. Details are available in Sony’s USB storage guidance.

Deleting an installed game does not remove it from your library. You can redownload it later, making this the no-cost option—provided you have enough download time and broadband capacity.

Can the digital Slim add a disc drive?
Yes, but only compatible Slim model groups are supported. Sony says its optional drive works with PS5 systems in the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups. An internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup. See Sony’s disc-drive setup instructions.
Adding the drive changes the console’s media capability; it does not add SSD storage. If you want both physical media and more storage out of the box, the 1TB disc model is generally the simpler choice.
How to identify the 825GB model
- Look for “PS5 Digital Edition – 825GB” in the official product description or on the box.
- Check the complete CFI model information on the console or packaging; retailer titles may use the generic “PS5 Slim” name.
- Do not assume every Slim is 825GB. Sony’s current US disc-equipped Slim listing says 1TB.
- After setup, check the available space under the console’s storage settings rather than treating the advertised capacity as free game space.
Bottom line: Sony has reduced storage on the US PS5 Slim Digital Edition from the earlier 1TB specification to 825GB. The disc-equipped Slim remains a 1TB model. The 825GB system is still practical for light users or buyers planning an M.2 upgrade, but the 1TB disc model offers more storage and physical-media flexibility for a relatively small current price difference.
