A teardown published in October 2026 reports another internal revision to the PS5 Slim: the inspected Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 Slim Digital had an EDM-051 motherboard, a revised liquid-metal containment area, a redesigned heatsink and easier access to its CMOS battery. The changes resemble aspects of the PS5 Pro’s cooling design, but no gaming-load temperature tests were reported. That means the teardown documents hardware changes—not proof that the revised Slim runs cooler or quieter.

What changed in the 2026 PS5 Slim revision?

Teardown reporting identifies the motherboard in the inspected Marvel’s Wolverine PS5 Slim Digital as EDM-051. The technician, Modyfikator89, and subsequent coverage describe a revised board layout, a changed protective area around the APU’s liquid-metal interface, a different heatsink construction and more accessible CR2032 CMOS battery. Notebookcheck’s October 1, 2026 report and TweakTown’s October 2 report describe the teardown findings.

The battery-access change concerns repairability, not game performance. The reporting presents the cooling-related changes as design improvements, but does not establish a measured benefit in temperature, acoustics, or reliability.

Does the updated PS5 Slim run cooler?

There is no published gaming-load temperature comparison in the cited coverage. TweakTown explicitly notes that the teardown reporting supplied no thermal measurements. Without controlled testing against an earlier Slim under the same workload and conditions, it is not possible to say how much—or whether—the revised design lowers operating temperatures.

PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

Likewise, “better cooling” should be understood as a description of the reported design intent or interpretation, not a verified performance result. The available reporting does not establish that the revision makes the console quieter, faster, or more reliable.

Is the heatsink the same as the PS5 Pro’s?

No evidence says the heatsink is identical. The reporting describes similarities to the PS5 Pro, particularly in the liquid-metal containment approach, and characterizes the arrangement as PS5 Pro-like. That comparison is about design features; it does not establish identical parts or equivalent cooling performance.

How does this differ from the 2025 PS5 Slim revision?

This is a separate reported change from the CFI-2116 PS5 Slim revision covered in 2025. That earlier revision was reported to adopt a PS5 Pro-like liquid-metal containment feature. The October 2026 teardown concerns a later internal revision with the EDM-051 board and additional reported changes. PlayStation LifeStyle’s 2025 coverage provides context for the earlier update.

Can you tell which PS5 Slim revision a store is selling?

The cited teardown reports do not identify a verified exterior mark, packaging label, or retailer code that guarantees a console contains the EDM-051 internals. A generic product listing therefore cannot be treated as confirmation of this revision. The reporting says the manual did not reflect the changes and that confirming the board revision would require inspecting the board itself.

Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual says there are no user-serviceable components inside and warns that unauthorized modification may void the warranty. Opening a console to check its motherboard is not a sensible way for a typical buyer to verify a revision.

What should buyers do with this information?

  • Choose a PS5 Slim based on the model, price, storage and retailer terms you can verify, rather than assuming a listing includes the EDM-051 revision.
  • Treat the reported redesign as an internal hardware change, not a reason to expect a measurable cooling or noise improvement.
  • Do not open the console to identify its board; Sony cautions against unauthorized internal modification.

Sony’s manual separately confirms support for commercially available M.2 SSD storage expansion. That is an optional storage upgrade, not a cooling accessory or a requirement for this revision.
