Sony raised recommended retail prices (RRPs) for selected PS5 models in Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand from April 14, 2025. The change was not uniform: Europe and the UK saw an increase for the Digital Edition, while Australia and New Zealand saw increases for both the disc and digital consoles. Sony left PS5 Pro prices unchanged and reduced the RRP of the optional Disc Drive. A separate increase took effect on April 2, 2026, so the 2025 figures below are historical, not current prices.
2026 update: Sony’s later price change lists European RRPs of €649.99 for the disc PS5, €599.99 for the Digital Edition and €899.99 for PS5 Pro; UK RRPs are £569.99, £519.99 and £789.99, respectively. These prices took effect April 2, 2026. For territories not listed in its table, Sony directs buyers to local retailers or PlayStation Direct. Sony’s 2026 announcement describes the change as global and cites continued pressures in the global economic landscape.
What Sony changed in April 2025
In an announcement on April 13, 2025, Sony Interactive Entertainment said the new RRPs would apply from April 14 in selected EMEA markets, Australia and New Zealand. An RRP is Sony’s recommended price, not a guarantee of what every shop charges: retailers may discount consoles, bundle them or price remaining stock differently.

The 2025 increase applied to the Digital Edition in Europe and the UK, but not the standard disc PS5. In Australia and New Zealand, both the disc and digital consoles increased. Sony also said PS5 Pro prices were unchanged and lowered the Disc Drive accessory’s RRP in the listed markets. The announcement did not mean that every EMEA country was affected; Sony advised shoppers in other markets to check local retailers or PlayStation Direct.

The following are Sony’s announced RRPs from April 14, 2025—not guaranteed current retail prices. Sony’s announcement stated that the listed European and UK disc-console prices were unchanged; it did not provide a new price for those models.

All 2025 prices and changes in the table come from Sony’s announcement. “Unchanged” means Sony announced no increase for that product in the 2025 change, not that its price has remained fixed since then.
How much higher were the 2025 Digital Edition prices?
These comparisons use the prior prices reported by the Associated Press, rather than comparing against a launch price. They describe the approximate change in the Digital Edition’s price in three markets; they are not a comparison of today’s shop prices.

The AP report gives those previous price points and describes the increases as at least 10%. The official 2025 announcement supplies the new RRPs but not a before-and-after table. A comparable previous New Zealand RRP has not been established here, so no percentage is given for that market. Associated Press coverage of the 2025 increase.
Why Sony said prices were rising
Sony attributed the 2025 decision to a “challenging economic environment,” naming high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates. It did not publish a detailed cost breakdown or identify a particular component, tariff, tax or supply-chain expense as the sole cause. That is the company’s explanation, not an independently demonstrated account of every factor behind the new RRPs. Sony’s 2025 announcement.
Does a Digital Edition plus Disc Drive make financial sense?
The lower 2025 accessory RRP made the Digital Edition-plus-drive route less expensive than it would have been at the former accessory price. It did not guarantee that the combination would beat a complete disc PS5 or a retailer bundle. Compare the local prices at the time of purchase rather than relying on RRPs from 2025.

- Digital Edition alone: suits buyers who get games digitally and do not need to play or collect discs.
- Digital Edition plus the official Disc Drive: adds the option to use compatible physical games later. Include the console and drive prices, stock availability, any necessary accessories and retailer offers in the total.
- Disc PS5: can be a better fit for buyers who purchase used or discounted physical games, resell or borrow games, own PS4 discs, or want Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray playback.
Digital game sales and physical-game deals vary, so there is no universal break-even point. A drive only makes sense if its extra flexibility is worth the total cost to you and the accessory is available at a price you consider reasonable. Sony’s official destination is PlayStation Direct; availability, pricing and delivery vary by territory.
What the April 2026 prices mean for buyers
The 2025 increase is useful as a record of Sony’s earlier regional decision, but it should not be used as a current-price guide. For Europe and the UK, Sony’s published 2026 table gives these RRPs from April 2:

Sony’s 2026 announcement says buyers in territories outside its published table should consult local retailers or PlayStation Direct. It does not provide a New Zealand 2026 RRP in the information available here, so one should not be inferred. An Australian price guide reports April 2026 RRPs of AU$999.95 for the disc PS5, AU$919.95 for the Digital Edition and AU$1,399.95 for PS5 Pro; those are secondary-source figures, not prices confirmed by the official Sony table. How to decide when and what to buy
Check the actual local offer
Compare the price at authorized local retailers and the official storefront where available. A temporary discount, bundle with a game you want, or remaining stock can change the value calculation; a marketplace listing above RRP is not evidence of Sony’s recommended price.
Choose a model around how you buy games
Pick the Digital Edition if digital purchasing is already your preference and its lower upfront price matters more than disc access. Choose a disc model if you regularly benefit from second-hand, borrowed or resale markets, or have a physical library. Compare the total price of a Digital Edition and separate drive against the disc model and relevant bundles before deciding.

Consider used or refurbished hardware carefully
A used or refurbished PS5 may cost less, but check the seller’s reputation, warranty, controller condition and, for a disc model, the drive’s condition. A retailer promotion may be a simpler alternative if warranty coverage and a new console matter more than the lowest price.

Existing owners do not need to act
A higher RRP does not change the performance or functionality of a PS5 already in your home. For owners considering a second console, replacement unit, Disc Drive or PS5 Pro, compare that specific purchase against current local offers; the 2025 fact that PS5 Pro was unchanged is not by itself a value recommendation.
What Sony’s business context does—and does not—show
Sony’s fiscal-year 2026 filing discusses hardware sales, memory-semiconductor supply shortages, hardware profitability and promotional planning. That context does not establish that memory costs caused the April 2025 increase, which Sony explained at the time by citing inflation and exchange-rate fluctuations. Sony’s fiscal-year 2026 filing.
For any purchase, treat an RRP as a reference point rather than a promise about the checkout total. Local taxes, shipping, retailer discounts, bundles and stock affect the price a buyer actually sees.
