Short answer: Sony has reportedly started early development of a standalone handheld designed to play PS5 games, but it has not announced the product, confirmed its specifications or given a release date. Bloomberg’s November 25, 2024 report said the device could still be canceled and was likely years away. The PlayStation Portal available today is a different product: primarily a Remote Play and cloud-streaming device, not a self-contained console.

This status reflects publicly available information through August 16, 2026. Sony’s 2026 hardware announcements reviewed for this topic covered products such as the FlexStrike wireless fight stick and a 27-inch gaming monitor, not a new handheld.
What Bloomberg actually reported
Bloomberg reported that Sony was in the early stages of developing a portable console intended to play PS5 games away from a television. The report positioned the project as a possible answer to Nintendo’s strength in dedicated portable gaming and the wider market for handheld play.

That is a report about a project, not a product launch. Bloomberg also said the device was likely years away and that Sony could decide not to release it. There is no official Sony announcement confirming the project’s existence, name, design or commercial plans. Read Bloomberg’s November 25, 2024 report.

Portal connects to compatible games installed on a paired PS5 over Wi-Fi and supports DualSense-style features, including haptics and adaptive triggers where games support them. Remote Play itself does not require PlayStation Plus, although online multiplayer requirements still apply. See Sony’s PlayStation Portal specifications and support information.
On November 5, 2025, Sony added cloud streaming for supported PS5 games on Portal, including selected digital PS5 games in a subscriber’s own library. The catalog, account requirements and regional availability vary, and PlayStation Plus Premium is required. Cloud play remains dependent on internet quality and service availability. Will the new device run PS5 games natively?
That is the central unanswered technical question. Bloomberg’s wording describes a portable console capable of playing PS5 games, but the available reporting does not say whether that means native execution on the device, cloud streaming, Remote Play, or a combination.

Compatibility questions Sony would need to answer
- Can existing digital PS5 purchases be downloaded without buying them again?
- Are patches required, and who decides which games receive support?
- Do saves synchronize automatically with PS5?
- Can the system operate fully offline?
- Will physical PS5 purchases transfer to a digital handheld?
- Is PS4, PSP or Vita backward compatibility included?
- Will third-party games receive the same support as Sony-published titles?
Hardware, games and price: what remains unknown
No reliable public source establishes the screen size, resolution, refresh rate, processor, memory, storage, battery capacity, weight, controls, operating system or display technology. A horizontal handheld with integrated controls and some DualSense-inspired features is plausible, but it is only a scenario, not a specification.
The same applies to software. Sony has not named launch games, announced a storefront, confirmed a dock or television output, or explained whether the device would share a software ecosystem with a future home console generation.

Price is also unknown. A machine powerful enough to run demanding PS5-class software would face difficult trade-offs among performance, battery life, heat, size and affordability. Large game installs would create additional storage costs.

When could it launch?
There is no verified release date, preorder window or launch region. Bloomberg’s description of a project that was years away in November 2024 is the strongest dated timing information available here, and it included the possibility of cancellation. Dates such as 2027, 2028 or 2029 should be treated as speculation unless Sony publishes a timetable.

Could it be connected to PlayStation 6?
A future handheld could launch alongside a next-generation home console or share an ecosystem with it, but that is strategic speculation. Sony has not confirmed a PlayStation 6 handheld, specifications, release window or backward-compatibility plan. Any alleged chip, memory or performance details circulating through leaks should not be treated as final hardware information.
Why Sony might build another handheld
- Nintendo remains the dominant dedicated portable platform.
- Portal demonstrated interest in using PlayStation games away from a television, even though it mainly relies on streaming.
- A native device could compete more directly with Nintendo hardware and PC handhelds.
- Local execution could reduce dependence on a powered-on PS5 and a reliable Remote Play connection.
The first two points reflect Sony’s existing products and the rationale described around the reported project. The latter points are an interpretation of what a standalone system could offer, not a stated Sony strategy.
The technical and business hurdles
- Power and thermals: PS5-class workloads consume far more energy than typical mobile games, forcing compromises in battery endurance, cooling, fan noise and weight.
- Compatibility: Existing games may need patches, lower settings or careful testing.
- Storage: Large modern installs make fast, high-capacity handheld storage expensive.
- Price: High-performance components could put the system above mainstream handheld prices.
- Software support: A convincing launch lineup and continuing developer investment would be essential.
- Network expectations: Cloud and Remote Play remain sensitive to latency, bandwidth, blocked ports and service outages.
- Product clarity: Sony would need to explain clearly why a native handheld is different from Portal.
Should you buy Portal or wait?
Buy Portal now if
- You already own a PS5 and want a dedicated Remote Play screen and controller.
- Your home network is reliable and you mainly play around the house.
- You have PlayStation Plus Premium and want supported cloud streaming.
Remote Play can fail on weak home upload connections, congested Wi-Fi, restrictive hotel or public networks, high-latency links, an unavailable PS5, or games that depend on special peripherals. Cloud streaming also varies by region, title availability, account eligibility, data limits and service uptime.
Wait if
- You specifically want offline, locally installed PlayStation games.
- You do not own a PS5 and do not want a device whose main function depends on one.
- You are buying only because you expect Portal to upgrade into a future native console.
Sony has not promised that Portal will become compatible with, or provide an upgrade path to, any rumored handheld.

What to check if Sony announces it
- Confirm whether games run locally, stream from the cloud, use Remote Play, or combine those modes.
- Check the launch library and whether existing PS5 purchases carry over.
- Verify offline play, required patches and cross-save behavior.
- Compare realistic battery life, screen quality, controls, storage and expansion options.
- Check price, subscription requirements, launch regions and warranty or repair arrangements.
- See whether Portal remains useful rather than assuming it becomes redundant.
The Bottom Line
Sony’s portable PlayStation is a credible reported project, not an announced product coming soon. Until Sony confirms the hardware, software model and timetable, treat every specification, price and release-date claim as speculation. Portal is the available option today, but it remains primarily a PS5 streaming accessory rather than the standalone handheld many readers are waiting for.
