The Sparkle GeForce GTS 250 1GB is a discontinued 2009-era graphics card that can still make sense in a period-correct Windows XP/7 gaming PC or a restoration project. It is not a sensible modern gaming upgrade. First identify the exact Sparkle SKU: the full-size SXS2501024D3-NM and low-profile SXS2501024D3L-NM have different clocks, power requirements, dimensions and SLI claims.

For most 2026 buyers, keep a working card for retro use, but choose a newer low-power GPU for current software, media codecs and displays.

Quick verdict

  • Retro DirectX 9/10 gaming: Potentially worthwhile, especially if you already own it.
  • Modern gaming: No. It lacks current APIs, drivers and performance.
  • Basic legacy HTPC display: Possible, with important HDMI-audio and codec limitations.
  • Windows 10: NVIDIA documented legacy-driver support, but not current application support.
  • Windows 11: Do not assume official compatibility.
  • Used purchase: Buy only after verifying the SKU, cooler, outputs and power connectors.

Identify the exact 1GB Sparkle card

Sparkle was the board partner; NVIDIA supplied the GeForce GTS 250 GPU. Sparkle sold at least two materially different 1GB cards. Retail photographs can vary by revision, so use the PCB label and hardware checks rather than appearance alone.

Model Form factor Core / effective memory clock Power Identification
SXS2501024D3-NM Full-size, approximately 24.1 cm in the reviewed sample 738 MHz / 2,200 MHz Two six-pin PCIe connectors Native HDMI, DVI-I and VGA; two-slot cooler
SXS2501024D3L-NM Low-profile PCB, approximately 198.5 mm 600 MHz / 1,500 MHz One six-pin PCIe connector Low-profile bracket and PCB; retailer listing says SLI unsupported
  1. Read the model number on the PCB, box or label.
  2. Check whether the bracket and PCB are genuinely low-profile.
  3. Count the six-pin sockets.
  4. Inspect the output arrangement.
  5. Use GPU-Z or the operating system’s hardware information to confirm the GPU and clocks.

The full-size specification is documented by Silent PC Review and the historical Newegg listing. The low-profile specifications appear in Newegg’s SXS2501024D3L-NM listing.

What the GTS 250 is

The GTS 250 uses NVIDIA’s 55 nm, G92-derived architecture with 128 stream processors. It was a midrange 2009 product, closely related to the GeForce 9800 GTX+ and widely characterized as a rebrand or light revision rather than a new high-end design. Contemporary positioning was broadly around AMD Radeon HD 4850-class performance.

For the full-size SXS2501024D3-NM, the published specifications are:

  • 1GB GDDR3 on a 256-bit memory interface
  • 738 MHz core and 1,836 MHz shader clock
  • 2,200 MHz effective memory clock
  • PCI Express 2.0 interface
  • 400 MHz RAMDAC
  • DirectX 10 and OpenGL 2.1-era feature set

The 1GB capacity could help some period games at higher resolutions or image-quality settings compared with 512MB cards. It does not make the card comparable to a modern 1GB GPU: architecture, shader throughput, memory technology, drivers and API support are all much older.

Outputs and multimedia behavior

The reviewed full-size card provides native HDMI, DVI-I and VGA/D-Sub, with HDCP, dual-link DVI and a listed maximum resolution of 2,560 × 1,600. Its HDMI socket does not automatically mean modern plug-and-play audio: the reviewed design requires an S/PDIF connection feeding audio into the card. Confirm the exact board’s manual and headers before planning HDMI sound.

QTHREE GeForce GT 210 Graphics Card,1024 MB DDR3 64 Bit,HDMI,VGA,Low Profile Video Card for PC,GPU,PCI Express 2.0 x16,SFF,Low Power
  • The Geforce 210 is with a 589MHz core clock,up to 1066Mbps effective, perfect for working, video and photo editing, allows good fluency, which can effectively meet your needs.
  • PCI Express 2.0 interface, offers compatibility with a range of systems. Also includes VGA and HDMI outputs for expanded connectivity, supports up to 2 monitors.Good for adding a simple low profile gpu to a small form factor pc.
  • The computer graphics cards is small in size and saves more space, easy to install, plug and play, you can build a compact PC system easily for slim/ITX chassis.
  • This low profile video card is good value option for entry level, if you just want basic upgrade graphics and daily simple work for your computer, or not be AAA gamer.(include low profile bracket)
  • No external power supply and the all-solid-state capacitor keeps low power consumption and high performance, supports Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP(not compatible with windows 11).

That output mix can suit an older LCD, CRT, projector or basic legacy HTPC. It does not imply HDR, modern high-refresh features, current codec acceleration or contemporary HDMI capabilities. Adapters may be required, and active versus passive conversion depends on the target signal.

Case clearance, slots and power

Physical fit

  • Measure from the rear bracket to drive cages; the reviewed full-size card was approximately 24.1 cm long.
  • Reserve two expansion slots for the cooler. A low-profile PCB is not automatically single-slot; the low-profile listing also specifies a two-slot cooler.
  • Verify that the case includes the correct full-height or low-profile bracket.
  • Confirm a physical PCIe x16 slot and adequate airflow around the fan intake and exhaust.

PCI Express 2.0 is backward-compatible in many systems, but firmware, operating-system support and motherboard power delivery can still cause installation problems.

Six-pin connectors and PSU capacity

The full-size model needs two six-pin PCIe connectors; it cannot be powered from the motherboard slot alone. The low-profile listing specifies one six-pin connector and a minimum 450 W supply with at least 24 A on 12 V. Those figures are not guarantees: PSU age, native connector quality, CPU load and the rest of the system matter.

Prefer a power supply with native PCIe plugs. Molex-to-six-pin adapters can overload weak or shared cables, especially in an old, poorly documented PSU. In Silent PC Review’s historical test system, wall draw approached 300 W under extreme stress; the sample was estimated at roughly 22 W idle and up to 124 W DC under load. Those are test results, not universal board-power specifications.

  • HDMI connectors is maximum resolution 4096 x 2160 at 24 hertz; DVI connectors is maximum resolution 2560 x 1600 at 60 hertz

Cooling, noise and ageing

The reviewed full-size design used a compact spiral heatsink and 74 mm fan. It was relatively quiet at idle but became buzzy or whiny under load; the test sample reached about 73°C in ATITool and 84°C in FurMark. A card nearly two decades old may behave very differently.

  • Dried thermal compound can raise temperatures.
  • Dust can block the small heatsink.
  • Worn bearings can cause clicking, grinding, surging or fan stoppage.
  • Bare memory chips had limited direct cooling on the reviewed design.
  • Replacement coolers may be difficult to source and can block adjacent slots.

Safe maintenance sequence

  1. Photograph the card before removing anything.
  2. Hold the fan still while blowing out dust; do not let it overspin.
  3. Inspect fan wobble, wiring, capacitors, PCB damage and connector pins.
  4. Check thermal pads for hardening or displacement.
  5. Replace thermal paste only if the cooler can be removed without damaging the board.
  6. Retest temperatures and fan behavior.

Stop using the card after artifacting, burning odor, unstable power behavior or fan failure. Repasting cannot repair damaged memory, solder fatigue or a failing voltage regulator.

Historical performance and realistic uses

The GTS 250 was a competent midrange 2009 gaming card, not a modern 250-series product. It remains most appropriate for period-correct Windows XP or Windows 7 systems, older DirectX 9/10 games, basic desktop output and selected legacy Linux or CUDA experiments. Do not infer current-game frame rates from launch-era reviews, and do not expect DirectX 11/12 feature levels, ray tracing, DLSS, modern hardware encoding or current display standards.

Operating systems and drivers

Windows XP and Windows 7

NVIDIA’s historical 190.62 Windows XP documentation lists the GTS 250 among supported GeForce 200-series products. These systems are the most historically appropriate targets.

Windows 10

NVIDIA’s 341.95 Windows 10 64-bit page lists the GTS 250. Use an archived official package where possible, but treat this as legacy compatibility, not ongoing security or application support.

Windows 11

Do not claim official Windows 11 support merely because a Windows 10 driver exists. Community workarounds are unsupported and may be unstable. Check Device Manager, driver installation behavior and each application’s requirements.

Linux

NVIDIA’s legacy GPU page places the GTS 250 in the 470.xx legacy-driver group. Distribution support depends on the kernel, X.Org or Wayland stack and package availability; NVIDIA’s listing does not guarantee installation on a current distribution.

Driver recovery

  1. Record the operating-system version and architecture.
  2. Use NVIDIA’s archive or the distribution repository, not a random driver-updater utility.
  3. Remove conflicting packages if the installer requires it, then reboot.
  4. Confirm the GPU in Device Manager or the system’s GPU tools.
  5. If the display fails, use Safe Mode or a recovery console to remove the driver.

CUDA and compute limits

NVIDIA lists the GTS 250 on its legacy CUDA GPU page. That means historical or specifically compatible CUDA experimentation, not support for current CUDA toolkits, machine-learning packages, video encoders or rendering applications. Verify the software’s required compute capability before attempting installation.

  • Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030
  • Video Memory: 4GB DDR4
  • Boost Clock: 1430 MHz
  • Memory Interface: 64-bit
  • Output: DisplayPort x 1 (v1.4a) / HDMI 2.0b x 1

Used-buying checklist for 2026

Ask the seller

  • What is the exact model number?
  • Can they provide clear photographs of both sides and a GPU-Z screenshot?
  • Do all required outputs work?
  • Does the fan start and ramp smoothly?
  • Are idle and load temperatures available?
  • Are both six-pin sockets functional on the full-size card?
  • Is the correct full-height or low-profile bracket included?
  • Has the cooler been replaced or modified?

Test after purchase

  1. Inspect capacitors, PCB, connector pins, fan and heatsink.
  2. Install it in a system with adequate native PCIe power.
  3. Confirm video output at boot.
  4. Install an appropriate legacy driver.
  5. Run a short graphics test while watching temperatures and artifacts.
  6. Test every output you need and listen for fan clicking or surging.

Avoid “untested” listings without returns, green or checkerboard artifacts, non-starting fans, damaged sockets, evidence of baking or reflowing, missing brackets and listings that mislabel a 512MB card as 1GB.

Is it worth using or buying?

Situation Recommendation
Restoring an authentic XP/7 gaming PC Use it if tested and stable.
Already-owned working card for older games Keep it; maintenance and PSU checks matter.
Small case needing a low-profile GPU Consider the low-profile SKU, but verify its slower clocks, one connector and two-slot cooler.
Modern games, HDR, current codecs or current drivers Buy a newer low-power or entry-level GPU instead.
Card with failing fan or artifacts Do not rely on it; replacement is usually safer.
Price close to a newer used GPU Choose the newer card unless historical authenticity is the goal.

There is no reliable new-retail supply: the historical full-size Newegg listing is out of stock. Used marketplaces, recyclers and retro forums are the realistic sources, so condition and return protection matter more than the old launch price.

Common confusion points

  • 9800 GTX+ versus GTS 250: They are closely related, but board layouts and clocks are not necessarily identical.
  • Low-profile versus full-size: They are separate SKUs, not interchangeable specification sheets.
  • HDMI audio: The reviewed full-size card needs S/PDIF input for HDMI sound.
  • SLI: Retail information identifies support for up to three-way SLI on the full-size listing, while the low-profile listing says SLI is unsupported.
  • “1GB” marketing: Capacity does not overcome old GDDR3 bandwidth, architecture or software support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the full-size Sparkle GTS 250 1GB need two power connectors?

Yes. The SXS2501024D3-NM uses two six-pin PCIe connectors; the low-profile SXS2501024D3L-NM listing specifies one.

Can it run Windows 11?

Do not assume official support. A Windows 10 legacy driver listing is not proof of Windows 11 compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it suitable for modern gaming?

No. It is best reserved for period-correct DirectX 9/10 systems and legacy display use.
