spxcoins.dll is a legacy driver-installation file, not a Visual C++ runtime or ordinary Windows application component. If spxcoins.dll is missing, Windows is usually trying to install, start, or repair hardware from the Specialix multi-port serial family, later associated with Perle Systems.
Start by identifying what is requesting the file:
- Note the exact program, installer, or Device Manager operation showing the error.
- Check whether it appears during startup, while installing a serial adapter, or when opening an old application.
- Confirm whether the related Specialix or Perle multi-port serial card is still installed.
- Check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit before reinstalling a driver.
- Look in Windows Security Protection History if the error began after antivirus activity.
The safest repair is to reinstall the original Perle or Specialix driver package for the exact hardware. Do not begin by downloading spxcoins.dll from a random DLL website or copying it into System32.
What spxcoins.dll does
The file is identified as Specialix MPS NT Upgrade CoInstaller and is associated with the Specialix Multi-port Serial Device Class CoInstaller. A co-installer is a component used during device-driver installation or upgrade. It helps Windows complete setup for hardware with functions beyond the basic driver installation process.
This places spxcoins.dll in the legacy Specialix and Perle multi-port serial hardware family. These products provided multiple serial ports through an expansion card or related adapter, commonly for office, industrial, communications, or point-of-sale equipment.

The file is not known as:
- A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable component
- A DirectX file
- A .NET runtime file
- A normal Windows application dependency
- A general-purpose system DLL required by modern Windows programs
Historical Windows XP file listings included files from this product family, but that does not mean spxcoins.dll is a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. Its presence on a current computer normally points to an old device installation, an upgraded system, a restored disk image, or software that still expects the legacy serial hardware.
Public file records describe a known copy as a 32-bit Windows DLL. That does not prove every historical Specialix or Perle package used the same binary, so use the driver package matched to your hardware and Windows architecture rather than relying on a file description from the internet.
What the error message really means
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because spxcoins.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application has failed to start because spxcoins.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because spxcoins.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting spxcoins.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “spxcoins.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Error loading spxcoins.dll.”
These are Windows loader messages. They identify the file Windows attempted to load, but they do not prove that the named DLL is the only problem.
For example, “the specified module could not be found” can mean that spxcoins.dll is present but one of its dependent files is missing. A damaged driver package, an incompatible architecture, a blocked file, or an incomplete device installation can produce a similar result.
The timing is useful:
- During serial-device installation: the driver package is incomplete, incompatible, or damaged.
- At Windows startup: an old service, device entry, or startup reference may still be looking for the file.
- After removing hardware: stale driver software may remain even though the card is gone.
- After an upgrade: the old driver may not have migrated correctly.
- After antivirus activity: the DLL may have been quarantined.
- When launching an unrelated old program: that program may be invoking a hardware utility or installer.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Perle or Specialix driver
This is the most likely solution when the serial hardware is still in use.
Identify the hardware first
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
- Also inspect Other devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and System devices.
- Look for a multi-port serial adapter, an unknown device, or an entry with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Select Hardware Ids from the Property list.
- Record the displayed identifiers, especially the vendor and device values.
If the device is not obvious, shut down the computer and check whether the Specialix or Perle card is physically installed. Do not remove an expansion card while the computer is running.
Check Windows architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
On Windows 11, 64-bit Windows is usual, but verify rather than assume. Older driver packages may be separated into x86 and x64 versions. A 32-bit DLL cannot simply be treated as interchangeable with a 64-bit driver component, and an old 32-bit package may not work with a 64-bit operating system.
Remove only the broken device installation
If Device Manager clearly identifies the affected adapter:

- Right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you intend to replace the old package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated serial, chipset, or motherboard devices just because they have similar names. If you are unsure, record the device name and hardware IDs before making changes.
Install the original package
Obtain the driver from Perle’s official support and download area, using the exact product model and the correct Windows architecture. Perle’s legacy listings include older Windows packages for several multi-port serial products and distinguish between 32-bit and 64-bit systems.
Then:
- Extract the downloaded package if it is compressed.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not require it.
- Return to Device Manager.
- Confirm that the adapter appears without a warning icon.
- Open Properties and check the General tab for a working-device message.
- Open Ports (COM & LPT) and verify that the expected serial ports are present.
If the package does not recognize the card, stop rather than forcing it onto the system. Confirm the product model, hardware IDs, Windows architecture, and whether the card is supported by that package.
If the exact legacy package is no longer available, contact Perle support with the hardware model and Windows version. Do not substitute a DLL from another product.
When manually checking several hardware models and driver packages, it is easy to install the wrong version or miss an outdated driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation and repair require the full version. Reinstalling the exact Perle or Specialix package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed or isolated the DLL. This is especially relevant if the error began immediately after a scan or threat-removal action.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection that refers to the driver directory or
spxcoins.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and associated program.
- Restore the file only if the path belongs to a trusted Perle or Specialix installation and the hardware is still required.
Do not restore a file solely because its name matches the error. A malicious file can use the same filename, and an old driver package may have been altered.
If the original package is available, reinstall it instead of restoring the quarantined copy. Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can cause it to be detected again. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it isolated and investigate the installation with a full security scan.
After restoring or reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat the operation that produced the error.
- Check Device Manager for warning icons.
- Confirm that the file is located under the expected driver or vendor directory, not an unrelated temporary folder.
Fix 3: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when the system has broader corruption, several Windows components are failing, or the error appeared after a failed update or disk problem. These commands do not replace the correct Perle driver, but they can repair damaged Windows components that an installer depends on.

- Serial adapter allows a serial device to be connected to a USB computer
- Plug and play convenience:DB9 serial port is seen as a COM port by your computer, and is available for use by any program that accesses COM ports
- No need for an external power adapter:draws power directly from your computer via the USB connection
- DB9 serial port supports data transfer rates up to 230 Kbps:twice the speed of a standard built in serial port
- LED shows adapter status and data activity at a glance
- Open Start.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click the result.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Try the original installation or application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the component source that System File Checker may need.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the result, run DISM again if necessary, restart, and repeat SFC once.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: retry from an administrator window or use Safe Mode if another process is interfering.
If SFC and DISM complete successfully but spxcoins.dll is still missing, return to the hardware-specific driver repair. These commands do not download a missing third-party driver.
Repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what needs repair; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the vendor driver remains the correct fix when the missing file belongs to the serial hardware package.
Fix 4: Install pending Windows updates
An update may correct driver-installation behavior or replace a damaged Windows component.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no further updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart and test the device again.
Windows Update is not a substitute for a discontinued vendor driver. It may not contain the Specialix or Perle package, especially on a modern Windows release.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can help when the error began after a driver update, software removal, or system migration and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs. It does not normally remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before confirming.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the restore point is too old or no restore point exists, cancel the operation and reinstall the correct driver instead.
Fix 6: Remove a stale reference when the hardware is gone
If the Specialix or Perle card was removed years ago and no current software needs it, restoring the DLL may only hide the real problem. Remove the obsolete reference instead.

Start with Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager.
- Select View.
- Select Show hidden devices.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and System devices.
- Identify greyed-out entries clearly associated with the removed hardware.
- Open Properties and confirm the device name before removing it.
- Right-click the stale entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
If the message appears at startup after the device is removed, also inspect:
- Settings > Apps > Startup
- Task Manager > Startup apps
- Task Scheduler
- Services
- The startup program’s own uninstaller
Do not delete registry entries at random. If a program still needs the old hardware, removing its service or installer reference can create additional failures. Create a restore point before making changes.
Why copying the DLL is unsafe
Downloading a single DLL and placing it in System32 is not a reliable repair for spxcoins.dll.
It can fail because:
- The file may be the wrong architecture.
- The version may not match the driver package.
- Required dependent files may still be missing.
- The file may have been modified or bundled with malware.
- Windows may need the complete device installation, not just one DLL.
- The installer may need to register services, device classes, or configuration files.
System32andSysWOW64have counterintuitive names on 64-bit Windows.
Use the complete original driver package instead. It supplies the files and configuration together and gives Windows the best chance of installing the device correctly.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix spxcoins.dll
regsvr32 is intended for COM and OLE DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for repairing every DLL.
There is no verified evidence that spxcoins.dll is a self-registering COM server. Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:
Recommended Free Tools
regsvr32 spxcoins.dll
If you run it and receive “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found,” that does not show that Windows is broken. It usually means the DLL was not designed for COM registration.
Use the vendor’s driver installer instead. The installer knows which files, device classes, services, and configuration entries are required.

How to verify a suspicious copy
If you already have a copy of spxcoins.dll, inspect it before using it.
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and record the full location.
- Open Details and review the description and product information.
- Open Digital Signatures, if present.
- Select a signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Use the associated driver package or installation log to determine why the file is present.
A missing signature does not by itself prove malware, particularly for an old driver component. Conversely, a familiar filename does not prove authenticity. Compare the file with a copy extracted from the original vendor package and scan it with current security software.

Is spxcoins.dll a Microsoft Windows file?
It is a legacy Specialix and Perle driver component. It has appeared in historical Windows XP-related file listings, but it should not be treated as a standard current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL.
What hardware uses spxcoins.dll?
It is associated with Specialix multi-port serial hardware and related Perle products. The exact card model must be identified before selecting a driver.
Is spxcoins.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot answer that. A legitimate copy should be associated with the expected driver installation and path. An unexpected copy in a temporary or unrelated application directory should be investigated and scanned.
Should I download spxcoins.dll separately?
No. Obtain the complete original Perle or Specialix driver package for the hardware. A standalone DLL may be malicious, incompatible, or insufficient to repair the installation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records point to a legacy 32-bit Windows build, but the exact binary used by every historical package is not established. Check Windows architecture and use the matching vendor driver package.
Why does the message say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
The message can refer to a dependency of spxcoins.dll, not necessarily the DLL itself. Check the complete driver package, architecture, installation logs, and Device Manager status.
Can SFC restore this file?
SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It may not restore a third-party Perle or Specialix driver component. Run DISM followed by SFC for broader Windows corruption, then reinstall the vendor driver if the file remains missing.
What if the hardware is no longer installed?
Do not restore the DLL just to suppress the message. Remove the stale device or startup reference after confirming that no current application depends on the serial card.
What to collect if the error remains
If the repair fails, record:
- The complete error text
- The executable or installer displaying it
- The full path where Windows expects
spxcoins.dll - The Windows edition and architecture
- The serial card model and hardware IDs
- Device Manager’s error code
- Recent antivirus detections
- The results of DISM and SFC
- Any relevant Event Viewer entry
- Whether the issue began after an upgrade, restore, disk migration, or hardware removal
That information distinguishes a missing driver package from a blocked file, missing dependency, incompatible architecture, stale startup entry, or wider storage problem. The correct next step is then a targeted driver repair rather than repeated DLL replacement.
