SRS on a Windows PC for YouTube Loop Streaming: Setup Guide

SRS can relay streams, but current official materials do not document a native Windows-to-YouTube setup. Learn the simpler direct workflow, settings, testing, and long-stream limits.

Short answer: the current SRS project README lists Linux and macOS, but not Windows, as supported platforms. The official material does not document a complete, native Windows SRS-to-YouTube loop setup. You can use Windows as the control PC and run SRS in a supported environment, but that adds setup and monitoring work. For one prerecorded YouTube loop, OBS or FFmpeg can publish directly to YouTube without SRS; SRS is useful when you specifically need a media server or relay.

What SRS, OBS or FFmpeg, and YouTube each do

  • The loop source is your prerecorded video and, if needed, its audio.
  • OBS or FFmpeg reads the source, encodes or packages it as needed, and publishes it.
  • SRS is a real-time media server. It can receive a publishing stream and provide a server or relay stage; it does not by itself make a prerecorded file loop.
  • YouTube Live is the destination. You create a live stream in Live Control Room and give the encoder its server URL and stream key.

The SRS README shows OBS configured with a custom service using rtmp://localhost/live and stream key livestream, and an FFmpeg example publishing a file to an SRS RTMP URL. Those are examples of publishing to SRS, not a full Windows-to-YouTube deployment recipe. The SRS v7 LTS getting-started page describes a Linux-oriented build workflow. The current project README lists Linux and macOS, not Windows, so do not treat a native Windows installation as officially supported by those sources. See the SRS project README and SRS v7 LTS getting-started guide.

Choose the architecture before configuring anything

Option What it does When it makes sense Main trade-off
OBS or FFmpeg directly to YouTube The encoder publishes the loop straight to YouTube Live. A single loop stream where you do not need an intermediate media server. Fewer components, but the PC and encoder must keep running and be monitored.
OBS or FFmpeg to SRS, then onward to YouTube SRS adds a media-server stage between the source and destination. You specifically need SRS’s relay or server role and can run it in an environment supported by the project. More configuration, another service to keep healthy, and a Windows-hosted end-to-end flow is not documented by the cited official sources.

For a Windows PC owner who only wants one prerecorded loop on YouTube, direct publishing is the simpler starting point. If you insert SRS, plan how the output reaches YouTube and how you will monitor and restart both the publisher and server. Do not assume SRS is required or that it will automatically handle a dropped YouTube connection.

Check YouTube access and prepare the loop

  1. Confirm live access early. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance before planning a launch.
  2. Choose a representative video. Check that the file plays correctly from beginning to end, including the audio. Test footage with the amount of motion and sound your real loop contains.
  3. Check rights and platform rules. Having a file does not establish that you have permission to stream its video or music. Review the rights to every element and YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules. A technical loop setup cannot make unauthorized material permitted.
  4. Decide how the loop will repeat. Confirm that your chosen source and encoder can repeat the file for the duration you need. The cited SRS material demonstrates publishing, not a Windows loop scheduler or a complete playlist workflow.

Set up the Windows publishing PC

For a direct workflow, install OBS on Windows and use its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic requirements, but meeting them does not guarantee streaming performance: CPU load varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the OBS system requirements and run a real test at the settings you plan to use.

  1. Open OBS and add the prerecorded video as a media source. Configure the source to restart or loop according to the available source options and your intended program.
  2. Set the canvas and output resolution to match the source and your connection. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution video unless you have a reason to do so.
  3. Choose an encoder your PC can sustain. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU demand when supported, while software encoding uses the CPU; neither is universally better for every machine and workload.
  4. Use YouTube’s encoder guidance for codec and stream parameters. YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Follow the encoder’s available options and YouTube’s current live encoder settings.
  5. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended at 1080p30, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended at 720p30. These are guide values, not guarantees. Pick a bitrate that suits the source, encoder, and stable upload capacity; allow the recommended 20% upload headroom rather than planning to consume all available upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

You do not inherently need a webcam, microphone, capture card, or dedicated hardware encoder for a prerecorded loop. YouTube says equipment depends on the production and that expensive equipment is not required to begin. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional practical choice for a stationary PC, not a documented requirement; reliable upload capacity and headroom matter either way. See YouTube’s streaming tips and YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the publishing encoder. For a direct OBS workflow, enter them in the stream settings and select the custom streaming service if prompted. YouTube’s documented flow is to configure the encoder with these values, start sending, inspect the preview, and then go live.
  3. Keep the stream key secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the new key.
  4. For the SRS architecture, first configure a publisher to send to the SRS address in the environment where SRS is running. The example address rtmp://localhost/live is for a local SRS example; it is not YouTube’s destination URL. Configure and verify the onward output to YouTube separately. The official material cited here does not provide a complete Windows-hosted relay configuration to copy safely.

Test, start, and monitor the loop

  1. Start the encoder or publisher and confirm that YouTube receives video and audio in the Live Control Room preview.
  2. Check stream health and listen to representative audio while watching representative motion. Look for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems, or a bitrate that fluctuates because the connection is saturated.
  3. Run a test long enough to reveal source-end behavior, repeat transitions, and any system sleep or restart issue. Keep Windows power settings from suspending the PC if it must publish continuously.
  4. When the preview and health indicators are satisfactory, use Live Control Room to go live. Keep an eye on the encoder, the network, and the YouTube status while the stream runs.
  5. If SRS is part of the path, monitor SRS and the publisher as well as YouTube. A healthy YouTube preview does not prove that your loop will recover after a source, server, PC, or network restart.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise indefinite 24/7 transmission, seamless restart, or preservation of a stream longer than 12 hours. For an extended loop, plan and test stream segmentation, restarts, monitoring, and archive handling rather than assuming one session will run forever. See YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
You cannot start a YouTube broadcast Channel eligibility or first-time activation Verify the channel, check for live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
YouTube receives no feed Destination URL, key, publishing state, or network Recheck the server URL and key in the correct encoder, confirm publishing has started, and inspect Live Control Room. Reset a key if it may have been exposed.
SRS does not accept the publisher Server availability or mismatch between the configured SRS address and publishing settings Confirm SRS is running in the environment you chose and that the publisher targets that server, not YouTube. The official examples do not establish a native Windows deployment recipe.
Video buffers or stream health is poor Upload instability, insufficient headroom, or encoder load Test the actual sustained upload, leave the recommended 20% headroom, and reduce output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if needed. Retest using representative motion and audio.
Playback stops at the end of the file Loop behavior in the chosen source or publisher Check the source’s repeat setting and test the transition before going live. SRS is the server stage, not a substitute for configuring a repeating media source.
The broadcast ends during a long run PC, publisher, SRS, network, or YouTube session interruption Identify which stage stopped, restore it, and test the restart procedure. Do not infer indefinite operation from YouTube’s archive behavior for streams under 12 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded video live without leaving a Windows PC on, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to operating a local publisher and SRS relay. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
