ssdpapi.dll Missing: Trace and Repair the Windows Component

If ssdpapi.dll is missing, Windows or an application cannot access part of the operating system’s SSDP discovery stack. The safest fix is to repair Windows itself with Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What ssdpapi.dll is

ssdpapi.dll is the SSDP Client API DLL, a Microsoft Windows component published by Microsoft Corporation. SSDP means Simple Service Discovery Protocol, which Windows uses as part of its discovery and Universal Plug and Play, or UPnP, functionality.

Microsoft describes the SSDP Discovery service as handling device-presence announcements, cached device discovery, subscriptions, and callbacks. SSDP uses UDP port 1900, while related event notifications use TCP port 2869 on modern Windows. The file is documented in Microsoft’s Windows file inventories and update manifests:

This is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX package, .NET runtime, printer driver, or game-specific middleware. Reinstalling those packages generally will not restore ssdpapi.dll.

Where Windows normally stores the file

On 64-bit Windows, the usual locations are:

C:WindowsSystem32ssdpapi.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64ssdpapi.dll

The names are counterintuitive:

  • System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files.
  • SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system files used by 32-bit applications.

A 32-bit program can therefore fail because the 32-bit copy is missing even when a 64-bit copy exists. Do not move a file between these folders based only on the folder name. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.

Windows versions, architectures, editions, and servicing states can contain different file versions. Do not treat a version or file size from an older Windows inventory as a universal current value.

What the error actually tells you

You may see wording such as:

  • “The program can’t start because ssdpapi.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “ssdpapi.dll was not found.”
  • “Cannot find ssdpapi.dll.”
  • “ssdpapi.dll could not be loaded.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because ssdpapi.dll was not found.”
  • “ssdpapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages identify a loading failure, not necessarily the underlying cause. The file may be:

  • Missing from the expected Windows directory
  • Corrupted
  • The wrong architecture for the calling program
  • Blocked or quarantined by security software
  • Present but unable to load because another dependency is damaged
  • Found in an unexpected application directory because of DLL search-order or hijacking issues

If the message appeared after a Windows update, failed rollback, cleanup utility, antivirus action, application installation, disk problem, or suspected malware infection, that timing is useful evidence. It does not prove which event caused the problem.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then restart

A failed or incomplete Windows update can leave protected components inconsistent. Start with Windows Update before replacing anything manually.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Check Windows Update again after restarting.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates.
  6. Restart and check again.

Microsoft’s current procedure is described in its Windows Update installation guidance.

If Windows Update reports an error, repair the system image using the steps below and then run Windows Update again. Windows 10 reached the end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025, so systems that cannot receive normal updates may need a supported servicing route or an upgrade decision.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair sequence for a missing or corrupted ssdpapi.dll. Run DISM first because it repairs the Windows component store that System File Checker uses as its repair source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run DISM

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  3. Restart Windows when it completes.

Run System File Checker

After the restart:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Enter:
sfc /scannow
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  3. Restart the computer again.
  4. Test the application that reported the error.

Microsoft documents this DISM followed by SFC repair sequence.

How to interpret the result

SFC may report that:

  • It found no integrity violations. The file may be present and the failure may involve the application, architecture, or another dependency.
  • It found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart and test again.
  • It found corrupt files but could not repair some of them. Run DISM again, inspect the CBS log, and use a matching repair source if necessary.

If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, use installation media or another repair source matching the installed Windows version and edition. Microsoft describes the advanced /Source: and /LimitAccess options in its Windows image repair documentation. Do not point DISM at a random DLL archive.

Manually repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting slow. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows system issues, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the appropriate first repair path.

Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file

Antivirus software may remove or quarantine a genuine file after a false positive, or it may identify a malicious copy placed outside the normal Windows directories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start and select Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections for ssdpapi.dll.
  5. Open the detection details and note the file path, detection name, and action taken.

Do not restore the file simply because its filename is familiar. Consider restoration only when all of these are true:

  • The file was located in the expected Windows directory.
  • Its digital signature identifies Microsoft as the signer.
  • The detection appears to be a false positive.
  • A current Windows Security scan does not find an active infection.

If the file was in an application folder, a temporary directory, a download directory, or another unexpected path, do not restore it. Run Windows Security scans and let DISM, SFC, or Windows Update replace the protected Windows copy.

Microsoft explains Protection History in its Windows Security guidance.

Fix 4: Verify the path and Microsoft signature

A valid Windows DLL should be in the appropriate protected Windows directory and should have a valid Microsoft signature. This check is especially important if you found a copy in an application folder.

Check the file location

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Browse to:
C:WindowsSystem32
  1. Search for ssdpapi.dll.
  2. On 64-bit Windows, also check:
C:WindowsSysWOW64

Do not assume that every copy is legitimate. A file with the correct name in an unexpected folder may be unrelated or malicious.

Check the graphical signature

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Digital Signatures tab.
  4. Select the signer and choose Details.
  5. Confirm that Windows reports the digital signature as valid and identifies Microsoft.

The exact tabs can vary if the file is not a normal signed Windows component. If there is no valid Microsoft signature, do not copy or register the file. Run a security scan and repair Windows through DISM, SFC, or Windows Update.

Check with PowerShell

You can also inspect a file with PowerShell:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32ssdpapi.dll"

For the 32-bit location on 64-bit Windows:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSysWOW64ssdpapi.dll"

A file that is absent will produce a path-related result. A signature result that is not valid is a reason to investigate, not a reason to download another copy.

Fix 5: Determine whether only one application is affected

If Windows services and several applications work normally but one game or program fails, the application installation may be damaged even though the missing file belongs to Windows.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, use the program’s own repair option:

  1. Open the application’s launcher.
  2. Look for Verify files, Scan and repair, Repair, or a similar command.
  3. Run that operation.
  4. Restart the application.

If the program has no verification option, repair or reinstall it from its official installer or launcher. Do not replace ssdpapi.dll inside the program’s folder unless the application’s vendor specifically documents that action. A launcher’s verify function repairs application files; it does not repair the Windows component store.

For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Select the application’s menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the application.
  8. Use Reset only if repair does not help and you understand that it may remove the application’s local data.

If reinstalling the application changes nothing and SFC reports corruption, return to the Windows repair sequence. If the exact error names a different DLL, troubleshoot that dependency separately rather than assuming ssdpapi.dll is the real cause.

Fix 6: Check SSDP and network discovery services

ssdpapi.dll is associated with the Windows SSDP and UPnP discovery stack. A disabled service can affect device discovery, but enabling a service will not repair a physically missing or corrupted DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect the service:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
services.msc
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Find SSDP Discovery.
  3. Open its properties.
  4. Note its current status and startup type.
  5. If network discovery is required and the service is disabled, set an appropriate startup type and start it.
  6. Test device discovery or the affected program.

Do not change service settings merely to suppress a DLL error. If the service fails to start and Windows reports that a component is missing, use DISM and SFC instead.

You can also check network discovery settings:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Network and Internet.
  3. Select Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Select Change advanced sharing settings.
  5. Review the profile currently in use.
  6. Turn on Network discovery only when it is appropriate for your network.

Network discovery settings do not replace ssdpapi.dll, and they are not a substitute for Windows component repair.

Fix 7: Investigate architecture and dependency failures

A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application do not always load the same Windows copy. A 32-bit program may use the copy in SysWOW64, while a native 64-bit program normally uses the copy in System32.

An error saying that the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows” can indicate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A corrupted file
  • A mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit file
  • A manually replaced file from another Windows build
  • A damaged dependency
  • A DLL loaded from the wrong directory

Do not install arbitrary x86 and x64 copies. Windows servicing should maintain the correct files for the installed system.

If the problem began after a graphics, network, chipset, or other hardware change, inspect the related driver:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the failing hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Review the General tab for an error code.
  7. Open the Driver tab to review the provider and version.
  8. Use Update Driver, Roll Back Driver, or the hardware manufacturer’s official installer when appropriate.
  9. Restart and test again.

A driver is not the same thing as ssdpapi.dll, and updating a driver is not a general DLL repair. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan to identify stale drivers, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid and verify important drivers against the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent system change

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore point.
  6. Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs without changing personal files. It does not guarantee that every corrupted component will be repaired. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.

Fix 9: Check the disk when repairs do not hold

If ssdpapi.dll repeatedly disappears, SFC repairs it but the error returns, or Windows cannot retain other system-file repairs, investigate filesystem or storage problems.

First, back up important files. Then review:

  • Windows Event Viewer for disk or filesystem errors
  • The drive’s health information from the computer or drive manufacturer
  • Whether other files are becoming corrupted
  • Whether Windows becomes unstable during disk-heavy operations

A disk check may be appropriate, but chkdsk is not an ssdpapi.dll-specific cure. Use it as a conditional storage diagnostic rather than the first response to a single missing DLL message.

Fix 10: Escalate to a Windows repair installation

If Windows Update, DISM, SFC, security checks, and System Restore do not resolve the issue, use a supported in-place Windows repair with installation media matching the installed edition and architecture. Back up important files first and follow Microsoft’s current installation guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An in-place repair can refresh Windows system files while preserving personal data and, depending on the selected options, applications. If the installation is severely damaged or malware cannot be removed, a clean reinstall may be necessary. That is a broader recovery step and should follow a verified backup.

For support, collect:

  • Windows edition and build
  • Exact error text
  • Affected application
  • Whether one program or several programs fail
  • The file path where ssdpapi.dll was found, if present
  • Digital signature results
  • Relevant Event Viewer entries
  • DISM and SFC results
  • Whether the problem followed an update, driver change, cleanup, quarantine event, or installation

What not to do

Do not download ssdpapi.dll from a random DLL site

There is no official Microsoft standalone ssdpapi.dll download package. Random DLL sites can provide:

  • Malware
  • The wrong Windows version
  • The wrong architecture
  • A modified or unsigned file
  • A file that does not match the component store

Even a genuine-looking replacement may not repair the underlying Windows servicing problem.

Do not copy the file from another computer

A copy from another PC may differ in Windows build, edition, architecture, servicing state, or signature. Protected-file repair through DISM, SFC, and Windows Update is safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair command

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a generic method for restoring Windows DLLs, and it is not the normal repair method for ssdpapi.dll.

Running:

regsvr32 ssdpapi.dll

may fail because the DLL does not provide the required registration entry point, or it may complete without addressing the actual problem. Microsoft documents regsvr32 behavior and the DllRegisterServer requirement.

Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes first

Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not the normal source of this Windows component. Reinstall them only when the error identifies a DLL belonging to those packages or the affected application explicitly requires them.

FAQ

Is ssdpapi.dll a Windows file?

Yes. It is the Microsoft Windows SSDP Client API DLL, associated with SSDP and UPnP discovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is ssdpapi.dll a driver?

No. It is a Windows DLL, not a hardware driver. A network driver can cause separate connectivity or discovery problems, but installing a driver does not normally replace this file.

Why does a game or application report a Windows DLL error?

Applications depend on Windows components. The application may be the first program that attempts to load the damaged or missing component, even though the file itself belongs to Windows.

Should I copy ssdpapi.dll into the program’s folder?

No. That can create a mismatched version, architecture problem, or DLL-hijacking risk. Repair Windows and repair the application through its official tools instead.

What if the file is present but the error continues?

Verify its location and Microsoft signature, then run DISM and SFC. Capture the exact application, Windows build, architecture, and Event Viewer details. The displayed filename may be the first failed dependency rather than the complete cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does ssdpapi.dll need to be registered?

Normally, no. regsvr32 is not the standard repair method for this Windows component.

What is the safest first step?

Install pending Windows updates, restart, then run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Run both commands from an elevated Command Prompt, in that order.
