ssubtmr6.dll is a genuine third-party VB6 ActiveX/COM component, not a Windows system file. When ssubtmr6.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the application that installed it.
The file is the Subclassing and Timer Assistant from vbAccelerator. VB6 applications and controls use it for window subclassing, timers, and Windows message handling. It is associated with legacy VB6 applications, VBA projects, and some vbAccelerator controls, including software that uses ExplorerBar or S-Grid components.
What ssubtmr6.dll is
| Item | Identification |
|---|---|
| File | ssubtmr6.dll |
| Internal description | Subclassing and Timer Assistant |
| Component | SSubTmr6 |
| Publisher | vbAccelerator |
| File type | VB6 ActiveX/COM DLL |
| Usual architecture | x86, with no authoritative 64-bit build identified |
| Windows component | No |
| Included in Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET | No |
This is not a normal Windows runtime file. It is also not supplied by the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET packages.
The original component archive is named VB6 SSubTmr Binary.zip and contains SSubTmr6.dll. Because the archive is old and there is no reliable modern version matrix, compatibility with every current Windows or Office setup is not guaranteed.
#1 Best Overall
Match the error to the likely cause
| Error or symptom | Most likely cause | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because ssubtmr6.dll is missing” | File removed, quarantined, or omitted during installation | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| “ssubtmr6.dll was not found” | The application cannot locate the DLL | Check the application folder and reinstall from its vendor |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies is unavailable | Repair the application and inspect its prerequisites |
| “The program could not be loaded” | Corruption, missing registration, dependency failure, or architecture mismatch | Identify the application and check whether registration is required |
Runtime error 0 – vbalExplorerBarLib |
Missing or improperly registered related component | Repair the application, then conditionally register the correct DLL |
Runtime error 372 involving vbalExplorerBarCtl |
Missing or improperly registered OCX/DLL component | Reinstall the application and its matching controls |
| Error appears only in 64-bit Office | A 32-bit ActiveX component is being loaded by a 64-bit process | Use a compatible 32-bit host or obtain a vendor-supported replacement |
The wording alone does not prove that ssubtmr6.dll itself is missing. A dependency, COM registration entry, antivirus quarantine, or incompatible host process can produce similar messages.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs the file
This is the most reliable fix because ssubtmr6.dll belongs with a particular application or VB6 project. Installing a loose copy into a Windows folder can create a version conflict while leaving the application incorrectly configured.
Identify the parent application
- Note the name of the program shown in the error dialog.
- If the dialog does not identify it, close the message and start applications that were recently installed, updated, or repaired.
- Check the error’s title bar and the executable name in Task Manager.
- Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target to find the program’s installation path.
- Look in that application folder for
ssubtmr6.dll, related files such asvbalExplorerBarcomponents, or a vendor installation log.
Do not assume that a file found in another program’s folder is suitable for this application. Old VB6 programs can require a specific component build.
Repair through Windows Settings
For a desktop application that supports Windows repair:

- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair should preserve the application’s data while restoring missing files and registration entries. If the error remains, return to the same screen and select Reset only if you understand that the program may lose local settings or stored data.
Repair through Control Panel
For older programs:
- Press
Windows + R. - Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch the program again.
If no repair option exists, uninstall the program and reinstall it using the original vendor installer. Back up application data, templates, databases, and license information before uninstalling.
If the application came from an employer, software vendor, or specialist industry system, use that vendor’s installer rather than a generic DLL source. For a known VB6 or VBA project, obtain the matching SSubTmr package from the original vbAccelerator archive or the project’s documented distribution source.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair worked if the application starts without the DLL message and its affected controls load normally. A successful installation should also place the component in the application’s expected directory or register it as part of the installer.
If the same error returns immediately, continue with the checks below instead of repeatedly reinstalling the same package.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine and file provenance
Security software may remove or quarantine an old ActiveX DLL, particularly when it is unsigned or bundled with an outdated application. That does not automatically mean the file is malicious, but it also does not prove that every copy is safe.
To inspect Windows Security:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Check whether
ssubtmr6.dll, the parent application, or its installer was quarantined. - Record the detection name and file path before taking action.
Restore or allow the file only when you can confirm that it came from the legitimate application installer or the original component publisher. If the file arrived in an unexpected archive, email attachment, or unofficial installer, remove it and obtain the application again from its legitimate vendor.
After restoring a verified file, run the application’s repair process. An antivirus restore by itself may not recreate COM registration.

Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
ssubtmr6.dll should be treated as an x86 ActiveX component. Microsoft’s VB6 support information describes the VB6 runtime as 32-bit, and native 64-bit Office cannot load 32-bit ActiveX binaries.
This creates two common situations:
- A 32-bit legacy application runs on 64-bit Windows but needs the 32-bit DLL.
- A 64-bit Office process or 64-bit host attempts to load a 32-bit VBA ActiveX component and fails.
To check Office architecture:
- Open Word, Excel, or the affected Office application.
- Select File.
- Select Account.
- Select About next to the product information.
- Read whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If a VBA project requires ssubtmr6.dll and Office is 64-bit, registering the DLL will not make it load. The host process itself must support the component. Use 32-bit Office when permitted by the project’s requirements, or ask the project developer for a genuine 64-bit replacement.
There is no verified official 64-bit SSubTmr6 build to recommend. Do not replace the component with a file that merely has the same name.
Fix 4: Register the DLL only when the error indicates a COM problem
Registration applies because ssubtmr6.dll is an ActiveX/COM DLL. It is relevant to errors such as runtime error 0, runtime error 372, “failed to load control,” or a vendor instruction specifically requiring registration.

It is not a general remedy for every missing-DLL message. Registration will not repair a missing file, wrong architecture, corrupted binary, or missing dependency.
First place the verified matching DLL in the application’s own installation directory, unless the application vendor specifies another location. Avoid placing it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Register on 64-bit Windows
Use the 32-bit registration utility for this x86 DLL:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command, replacing the path with the actual file location:
%windir%SysWOW64regsvr32.exe "C:PathTossubtmr6.dll"
- Press Enter.
- Start the application again.
Register on 32-bit Windows
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
%windir%System32regsvr32.exe "C:PathTossubtmr6.dll"
A success message confirms that registration completed. It does not confirm that the DLL is the correct build or that all dependencies are present.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf regsvr32 reports that the module could not be found, verify the path first. If the path is correct, the message may refer to a dependency required by the DLL. If registration reports an architecture error, you likely used the wrong regsvr32 executable or have a host mismatch.
Fix 5: Restore missing VB6 prerequisites through the application vendor
Some legacy applications need ordinary VB6 runtime files in addition to ssubtmr6.dll. If the application separately reports a file such as msvbvm60.dll, follow the application vendor’s prerequisite instructions.
The Microsoft VB6 runtime does not include the vbAccelerator SSubTmr component. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET will not normally restore ssubtmr6.dll.
For a known application:
- Open the vendor’s installer or setup package.
- Select Repair, Modify, or Prerequisites, if available.
- Run the installer as administrator.
- Restart the application.
- Check whether the new error names a different missing prerequisite.
Do not install unrelated runtime packages simply because the error contains the word “DLL.”

Fix 6: Check Windows component health only when Windows has broader problems
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not normally supply a third-party vbAccelerator DLL. Use them when Windows also has damaged system files, failed updates, broken built-in applications, or other operating-system symptoms.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the affected application.
If you are repeatedly hunting for component versions or rerunning SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the parent application remains the definitive fix for this file.
If SFC and DISM complete successfully but the application still reports ssubtmr6.dll, return to the application repair and architecture checks. Windows repair did not restore a third-party application component.

Fix 7: Do not treat drivers as the normal cause
ssubtmr6.dll is an application ActiveX component, not a hardware driver. Driver reinstallation is not a standard fix for this file.
Use Device Manager only when the same computer also has a separate hardware problem:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected device.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
Do not remove display, storage, chipset, or other drivers merely because this DLL error appeared. If the application vendor specifically identifies a hardware dependency and you are tired of hunting through multiple device pages for stale versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; the full version performs driver installation, but it is not a substitute for repairing the application that owns ssubtmr6.dll.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only for a documented application requirement
Enabling Windows Features is not a direct fix for SSubTmr6. It may be relevant if the application vendor explicitly requires an optional .NET or legacy component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To inspect optional features:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for the prerequisite named by the application vendor.
- Install it only if the vendor documents it.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not enable random legacy features to replace a missing ActiveX DLL. The SSubTmr component must come from the application or its original component package.
What not to do
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not download a random DLL
Unofficial DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a build that does not match the application. Even a clean-looking replacement may fail because the COM registration, dependencies, or parent program installation is still broken.
Do not copy a random file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Prefer the application’s official installer, its repair function, or the original vbAccelerator archive for a known VB6/VBA project.
Do not register every DLL you find
regsvr32 is for COM self-registering libraries. It is not a universal DLL repair command. Registering the wrong file can create stale or conflicting COM entries.
Do not assume a successful registration proves compatibility
A success message only confirms that registration completed. A 64-bit Office process can still reject a 32-bit ActiveX DLL, and a missing dependency can still prevent the application from starting.
Do not blame Windows automatically
SFC, DISM, System Restore, and Windows Update are secondary steps. They will not normally provide this third-party file. System Restore is appropriate only when the issue began after a known change and a suitable restore point exists.
When to contact the application vendor
Escalate to the application developer when:
- Repair and reinstall do not restore the file.
- The application’s installer repeatedly removes or fails to register it.
- The program is 64-bit but requires a 32-bit ActiveX component.
- The error returns after every update.
- The installer reports a missing dependency that is not documented.
- The application folder contains several conflicting copies.
- The program is an old business application that no longer supports current Windows or Office architecture.
Give the vendor the exact error text, application name, executable path, Windows architecture, Office bitness if relevant, and whether repair or registration changed the result. Do not email an arbitrary DLL copy as the proposed solution.
FAQ
Is ssubtmr6.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party vbAccelerator ActiveX/COM component used by legacy VB6 applications, controls, and some VBA projects.

No. Those packages are not the normal source of this file.
Is ssubtmr6.dll safe?
A legitimate copy from the original application or vbAccelerator source may be genuine, but the filename alone proves nothing. Check its provenance, location, installer, and antivirus history before restoring or allowing it.
Should I download the file from a DLL website?
No. Use the application vendor’s installer or the original vbAccelerator package for a known project. A random replacement may be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete.
Does regsvr32 fix a missing file?
No. It can register an existing ActiveX/COM DLL when registration is the problem. It cannot create a missing, damaged, incompatible, or incomplete file.

Can 64-bit Office load it?
Not normally. Treat ssubtmr6.dll as an x86 component. A 64-bit Office process cannot load a 32-bit ActiveX binary merely because the DLL was registered.
Should I run SFC and DISM?
Run them when Windows itself shows broader corruption or update problems. They are not the primary repair for ssubtmr6.dll.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found” when the file is present?
That wording can indicate a missing dependency rather than a missing ssubtmr6.dll. Repair the parent application and check its documented prerequisites before replacing the file.
What is the definitive fix?
Identify the application that needs the component, then repair or reinstall that application from its legitimate installer. For a known VB6 or VBA project, use the matching original SSubTmr package and register the x86 DLL only when the application requires COM registration.
