Star Wars: Episode I: Racer is a podracing game rooted in the famous race from The Phantom Menace. Star Wars: Galactic Racer is an upcoming game about a broader, unsanctioned Outer Rim racing league, with several kinds of craft. The announced games differ in premise, vehicles, and what is known about their features; there is not yet a fair basis to compare how the new game handles or performs.

Is Galactic Racer a sequel to Episode I: Racer?

Official announcements present Galactic Racer as a new take on Star Wars racing, not as a direct sequel to Episode I: Racer. Its story centers on an unsanctioned Outer Rim league and characters including Shade, Darius Pax, and Kestar Bool. The older game recreates and expands on the podracing spectacle associated with The Phantom Menace. StarWars.com’s reveal discusses the new game’s place in the franchise’s racing legacy, but does not identify it as a continuation of the 1999 game’s story.

How do the vehicles and racing differ?

Episode I: Racer is focused on podracers

The classic game puts podracing at the center: twin-engine racers, hazardous courses, and shortcuts to learn. Its 2020 rerelease announcement lists 25 playable racers and tracks across eight worlds. Aspyr described the original game’s simulated speed as “over 600 mph”; that is a depiction of in-game speed, not a real-world vehicle measurement. The rerelease feature list and Aspyr’s PlayStation Blog feature overview provide those details.

Galactic Racer mixes several craft types

The new game’s official gameplay announcement names landspeeders, skim speeders, speeder bikes, and podracers. It describes a league with multiple racing styles, rather than a game limited to the film’s podracing format. Its published materials say racers earn parts, tools, and upgrades, but do not establish a final vehicle or track count. The gameplay announcement is the source for the announced craft and progression details.

What is known about progression and course scope?

Episode I: Racer gives players pit-droid upgrades to speed and acceleration, while shortcuts reward learning each course. Its official rerelease description specifies 25 racers and eight worlds. For Galactic Racer, official materials establish parts, tools, and upgrades as rewards, but do not give comparable final counts for vehicles, racers, or tracks. A count-for-count scope comparison would therefore go beyond what has been announced.

What multiplayer features are confirmed?

The modern Episode I: Racer rerelease supports split-screen; the Switch announcement also lists LAN multiplayer. Galactic Racer’s editions page refers to online-multiplayer cosmetics, but that reference does not confirm full multiplayer modes, player counts, cross-play, or local play. Those specifics should not be assumed from the cosmetics mention alone. StarWars.com’s rerelease announcement lists the older game’s supported play, while the new game’s editions page describes the cosmetic items.

Can you compare gameplay quality or value yet?

Not on the basis of the published descriptions alone. Galactic Racer’s announced features establish its premise and intended systems, not how its handling, performance, or overall quality compare with the older game in practice. Those are judgment calls for play after release, not facts that can be inferred from a trailer or feature list.
