Star Wars Zero Company and XCOM 2 share turn-based, squad-focused tactics, but the documented emphasis differs: Zero Company spells out a three-action-point turn built around operator choices, assists, overwatch and Advantage-powered actions, while XCOM 2 foregrounds guerrilla missions such as ambushes, VIP rescues and extraction. The distinction is about their described systems and priorities—not proof that either game lacks a feature the other has.
How does Star Wars Zero Company combat work?
In Star Wars Zero Company, combat pauses while you choose an action for each operator. The action resolves immediately; then the opponent takes its turn. Each operator has health and three action points (AP) to spend on movement, attacks and abilities, according to the StarWars.com getting-started guide.

Spend AP to move, attack and set up reactions
Movement costs AP and can bring an operator into cover. Attacks can be ranged or melee, and the game indicates which target offers the best chance to hit. A nearby teammate can assist an operator’s strike by adding an attack. Operators can also spend remaining AP on overwatch: during the opponent’s turn, it triggers a reaction attack if an enemy acts or moves through the targeted area.
Build toward special actions and manage injuries
Damaging enemies earns Advantage points, which can be spent on powerful special actions. Rally can get a downed operator back on their feet. Permadeath is optional: with it enabled, an operator dies after receiving three injuries. Mission objectives determine success, so eliminating every enemy is not necessary unless the objective calls for it.

What does XCOM 2 emphasize in its tactical missions?
The XCOM 2 Steam listing describes its combat as tactical guerrilla warfare. It specifically highlights using concealment to ambush enemy patrols, looting enemies for gear and artifacts, rescuing VIPs, and carrying fallen comrades to extraction. It also points to varied maps, mission types and goals, plus five soldier classes, each with a skill tree.
Those official descriptions make mission setup and mission-specific tasks especially visible in XCOM 2’s pitch. By contrast, Zero Company’s getting-started guide gives unusually concrete attention to what each operator can do with AP, how teammates can assist, and how overwatch and Advantage work. This is a contrast in documented emphasis, not a complete rules comparison.

What is different about Zero Company and XCOM 2’s squad decisions?
Zero Company ties combat choices to a team of authored and customizable characters. The game’s official announcements describe customization of Hawks and squadmates’ appearances, loadouts and abilities; squadmates can form bonds that unlock combat synergies. Those bonds give squad relationships a stated tactical payoff, alongside the moment-to-moment decisions about AP and coordination.
XCOM 2’s store description instead frames development through its five classes and their skill trees, as well as upgrades made through the campaign’s research and headquarters systems. The available descriptions support a difference in framing—bonds and coordinated actions in Zero Company, classes and skill trees in XCOM 2—but do not establish that either game lacks the other’s broader kinds of squad development.

How the campaign changes the rhythm of combat
Zero Company: choose deployments from The Den
Zero Company operates from The Den, a decommissioned cargo freighter docked at the Ring of Kafrene. At its Holotable, Hawks chooses tactical missions and noncombat operations for the current cycle. Tactical missions use experienced operators and can advance the story. Noncombat operations cost Intel and may reward items, credits or influence, or affect squad bonds. Since you cannot take every available mission or operation, deployment is a meaningful campaign choice. The guide recommends completing Den activities before deploying because a mission advances the game to the next cycle.
XCOM 2: manage the resistance from the Avenger
XCOM 2 is set in an alien-occupied Earth, where the resistance operates from the mobile Avenger headquarters. Its store listing describes an open-ended map layer for choosing where to guide the strike team, resistance recruitment, and rooms and research that improve battlefield capabilities. The two campaigns therefore put combat in different strategic frames: cycle-based deployments and Intel-funded operations from The Den, versus resistance management and upgrades aboard the Avenger.

Is Zero Company like XCOM 2?
Yes, in its broad turn-based squad-tactics foundation, and the comparison has a direct development connection. In a June 9, 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Bit Reactor Creative Director and CEO Greg Foertsch and Lead Designer James Brawley discussed their work on XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2, War of the Chosen and Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Brawley said the team retained familiar mission and encounter structures and tactical pressure while adding distinctive features. That shared design lineage helps explain the resemblance, but it does not make Zero Company simply Star Wars with XCOM 2’s rules.
Brawley described the turn-based tactics challenge this way: “the enemy units present a puzzle every turn that you get to think through – with a big canvas of possibilities and actions and figuring out who does what and in what order – in order to orchestrate the results of each turn.” Foertsch described the team’s narrative goal as: “It’s really trying to push narrative, married with visuals, married with gameplay, with no sacrifices that people have come to expect for strategy games.” These are the developers’ stated aims, not independent judgments of how well the finished game achieves them.

Release status and comparison limits
As of October 7, 2026, Star Wars Zero Company is available for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. EA announced its availability on August 27, 2026, through digital stores and retail; the official guide lists Standard, Deluxe and Collector’s editions. XCOM 2’s Steam listing gives its release date as February 4, 2016.
The available official descriptions do not provide a full side-by-side rules manual or a controlled comparison. They do not establish comparative figures for difficulty, hit percentages, cover bonuses or enemy behavior, so those are not reliable grounds here for declaring one game harder, deeper or mechanically superior.
