Starfield has two overlapping recruit pools: companions who can travel with you, and crew members you assign to ships or outposts. The four central Constellation companions join through the main quest; other hires are found across the Settled Systems, while several additions require specific updates or the Terran Armada story. This guide covers the recruits and routes established through Bethesda’s April 2026 update announcement, but it is not a verified, exhaustive list of every possible hire.
Companions and crew are related, but not the same thing
A companion can follow you on foot and can also serve as crew. Crew is the broader category: some recruits are useful for ship or outpost assignments but are not established here as followers. Bethesda describes crew as hired help encountered during your travels and/or Constellation companions. Crew members provide passive bonuses when assigned, so check each candidate’s displayed skills before hiring and choose assignments that suit those skills.

For a follower recruited through Constellation, you can progress their associated companion quest when it becomes available. The four central Constellation companions are also the four romanceable companions identified by the StarfieldDB guide; that does not mean every recruitable crew member can be romanced.
Recruit the four central Constellation companions
Bethesda lists these four companions with their main-quest gates. Follow the quest sequence before travelling to their listed locations; arriving early does not bypass the required mission.
#1 Best Overall
- Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits
- Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets
- Pilot and command the ship of your dreams.
| Companion | Recruitment gate and location | Further companion quest |
|---|---|---|
| Sarah Morgan | Complete The Old Neighborhood; find her at the Lodge. | In Memoriam |
| Sam Coe | Complete Empty Nest; he becomes available through the Constellation story. | Family Matters |
| Barrett | Complete Back to Vectera. He appears earlier in the story, but Bethesda says he cannot become a companion until this mission is complete. | Breach of Contract and Worlds Apart are listed by Bethesda. |
| Andreja | Complete Into the Unknown; meet her during that mission. | Not stated in Bethesda’s cited companion listing. |
Bethesda’s companion listing does not establish individual hiring prices or skill details for these entries. Use the in-game dialogue and crew interface to review available skills and assignment choices.
Find and hire other crew members
Potential hires appear around the Settled Systems, particularly in bars. StarfieldDB also points to bars and hotels in major cities. Speak to a candidate and review the skills shown in the dialogue interface before committing. Some named hires require credits; others may respond to a sympathetic conversation or a persuasion check. The exact gate depends on the individual, so do not assume one hiring method applies to everyone.
Examples included in StarfieldDB’s broader directory are the Adoring Fan, Amelia Earhart, Andromeda Kepler, Marika Boros, and Heller, alongside numerous skill-specialist hires. These are examples, not a complete roster or a guarantee that every candidate is available under every quest state. StarfieldDB displays 39 crew entries in its guide; that is the guide’s directory count, not an independently verified total for the game.

Bethesda explicitly warns that its own miscellaneous crew list is incomplete. Neither that list nor the directory count should be read as proof that all possible hires, randomized candidates, or quest-dependent cases are covered.

Recruit the 2026 update and Terran Armada additions
These additions have different availability requirements. Muria is presented by Bethesda as an Elite Crewmember added in the 2026 update; Delta, Roxanne Bourreau, and the ModelG mini-bot are associated with Terran Armada content or its related quest details.
| Recruit | Content and route | Cost or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Muria Siarkiewicz | 2026 update addition. Bethesda says she can be added as Elite Crew at her usual spot near Galbank in New Atlantis. GameSpot’s April 8, 2026 guide says to find her in the Galbank lobby after her interview sequence. | GameSpot reports a 15,000-credit hire cost after the interview sequence. This is secondary-guide information, not a price stated in Bethesda’s announcement. |
| Delta | Terran Armada companion. GameSpot’s April 8, 2026 guide says Delta joins after being rebooted during the second Terran Armada quest, Lost Luxury. | Terran Armada story access; the detailed quest step is reported by GameSpot. |
| Roxanne Bourreau | Terran Armada recruit. GameSpot says she joins after being found during Into the Void. | Terran Armada story access; the recruitment step is reported by GameSpot. |
| ModelG mini-bot | Bethesda says the Spare Parts quest in The Well can add a ModelG mini-bot as Elite Crew. | Complete the relevant quest; Bethesda’s announcement does not state a price. |
Bethesda’s April 7, 2026 announcement identifies Delta as a companion encountered in the Terran Armada story and describes the ModelG as an Elite Crew option from Spare Parts. GameSpot provides the more specific Delta, Roxanne, and Muria recruitment steps above. Confirm those individual quest outcomes in your current game if a step does not match your quest state.

- TELL YOUR STORY - In Starfield the most important story is the one you tell with your character. Start your journey by customizing your appearance and deciding your Background and Traits. Will you be an experienced explorer, a charming diplomat, a stealthy cyber runner, or something else entirely? The choice is yours. Decide who you will be and what you will become.
- EXPLORE OUTER SPACE - Venture through the stars and explore more than 1000 planets. Navigate bustling cities, explore dangerous bases, and traverse wild landscapes. Meet and recruit a memorable cast of characters, join in the adventures of various factions, and embark on quests across the Settled Systems. A new story or experience is always waiting to be discovered.
- CAPTAIN THE SHIP OF YOUR DREAMS - Pilot and command the ship of your dreams. Personalize the look of your ship, modify critical systems including weapons and shields, and assign crew members to provide unique bonuses. In deep space you will engage in high-stakes dogfights, encounter random missions, dock at star stations, and even board and commandeer enemy ships to add to your collection.
- DISCOVER, COLLECT, BUILD - Explore planets and discover the fauna, flora, and resources needed to craft everything from medicine and food to equipment and weapons. Build outposts and hire a crew to passively extract materials and establish cargo links to transfer resources between them. Invest these raw materials into research projects to unlock unique crafting recipes.
- LOCK AND LOAD - Space can be a dangerous place. A refined combat system gives you the tools to deal with any situation. Whether you prefer long-range rifles, laser weapons, or demolitions, each weapon type can be modified to complement your playstyle. Zero G environments add a chaotic spectacle to combat, while boost packs give players freedom to maneuver like never before.
Assign crew to a ship or outpost
- For a ship: land the ship first. Bethesda’s instructions say crew assignments can only be made to a landed ship.
- Open the Crew Roster: use it to manage crew assignments, then select an available ship or outpost destination.
- For an outpost: build a Crew Station there before trying to assign crew.
- Choose for the job: compare the candidate’s displayed skills with the passive benefits you want. StarfieldDB recommends prioritizing technology-focused crew for ships and science-focused crew for outposts; treat that as its selection advice, not a Bethesda assignment rule.
Understand ship crew capacity
Your ship’s usable crew limit is the lowest of three separate limits, not simply the number of people you have recruited:
- The combined crew capacity listed on Reactor, Weapon, Engine, and Shield modules.
- The number of Crew Stations available in the cockpit and other modules.
- Your active-crew allowance from the Ship Command skill.
Bethesda lists the following active-crew allowances for Ship Command:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Ship Command rank | Active crew allowed by the skill |
|---|---|
| Rank 1 | 4 |
| Rank 2 | 5 |
| Rank 3 | 6 |
| Rank 4 | 8 |
Those are skill limits only. Your ship may still support fewer crew if its modules or Crew Stations impose a lower limit. Bethesda also says Outpost Management rank 3 allows additional crew at outposts.
What this roster does—and does not—cover
The confirmed central companions, named hire examples, and update or DLC recruits above give you the routes and prerequisites established by Bethesda’s support and update material and the cited StarfieldDB and GameSpot guides. They do not verify every entry in a broad directory, randomized hire, or quest-condition edge case. Bethesda’s miscellaneous crew list is explicitly incomplete, and the StarfieldDB count of 39 entries is a directory count rather than a definitive in-game total. Treat the roster as a practical guide to these documented recruits, not a promise that no other crew can be recruited.
