State of Indie 2026: Indie Game Economics and Pricing

Indie game economics are not captured by a single growth figure—or by predictions of an “indiepocalypse.” Andrew Johnston’s 2026 analysis for SUPERJUMP reports $2.3 billion in 2025 revenue for games carrying Steam’s “indie” tag, while estimating a broader $3 billion to $4 billion across untagged indie games, other storefronts, and console versions. Those figures describe different scopes, and neither establishes whether a typical studio can recoup its costs.

What do indie games earn as a market?

Johnston’s SUPERJUMP article reports that games with Steam’s “indie” tag generated $2.3 billion in 2025, compared with $1.8 billion in 2021. The article estimates total indie revenue at $3 billion to $4 billion after accounting for indie games without that tag, other storefronts, and console versions. The wider figure is an estimate, not an audited industry census, and should not be confused with tagged Steam revenue. Read Johnston’s market analysis at SUPERJUMP.

For context, Johnston compares the indie-tag Steam figures with direct video-game revenue, excluding hardware and services: $202 billion in 2021 and around $322 billion in 2025. Over that period, the article says indie-tag Steam revenue grew about 27%, while total industry revenue grew about 59%. The comparison suggests that tagged indie revenue grew more slowly than the industry total; it does not measure the financial health or profitability of individual games.

How much should you charge for an indie game?

There is no universally right indie price. The decision depends on development scope and cost, what the target audience expects from the genre, the game’s length and perceived value, and the alternatives players see at that price. A price should be tested against the actual product and audience rather than inferred from overall market growth.

Under $20 remains common, but it is not a ceiling

Johnston describes below-$20 pricing as common for indie releases and notes that more games returned to that range in 2025 and 2026. SUPERJUMP’s account of Gamalytic puts the share of indie Steam games priced above $20 at about 3%; the article does not give the underlying dataset or definition, so treat that as a reported estimate rather than a precise census.

At the same time, the article points to a middle tier between large AAA studios and small indie teams: developers with dozens to hundreds of employees releasing games regularly at roughly $20–$60. It argues that this segment may benefit when players face higher costs elsewhere and premium AAA prices move toward $80. That is the author’s interpretation of market conditions, not proof that a particular price point will succeed. The article also reports revenue growth since 2023 for games priced $30–$50, while emphasizing that they remain a small slice of the market.

Higher-priced games need to make the value legible to buyers. Production values, scope, length, genre expectations, and the audience’s sense of what a game in that category should cost all matter. As developer Christoffer Bodegard puts it in Johnston’s article, “But it will always come down to the vibe,” referring to perceived value, game length, and what a genre’s audience is used to spending. That is a qualitative judgment, not a pricing rule.

Use research to test a price, not to manufacture certainty

Johnston describes Pancake Studios’ pricing work for Sensory Overload, which used Gabor-Granger analysis—a method that tests willingness to pay at different price points—and arrived at a $10 ceiling for that game. That result belongs to that title and its research; it is not evidence that $10 is an appropriate cap for other indie games.

A useful pricing check is to compare several candidate prices against the game’s scope, costs, genre conventions, intended audience, and the value buyers can see in the store page and demo. Research can help expose where willingness to pay drops, but it cannot guarantee sales volume, cover development costs, or substitute for understanding the audience.

How do indie games make money?

Funding and monetization answer different questions. Funding is how development is financed; monetization is how a game earns money from players. The GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry report surveyed more than 2,300 professionals and reported a ±3 percentage-point margin of error. Its results describe respondents, not the full population of games or studios. GDC also cautions that survey changes mean reliable year-over-year comparisons generally will not be available until 2027. See the GDC State of the Game Industry report.

In that survey, 74% of respondents worked on premium games and 26% on free-to-play games. GDC warns that respondent composition may not reflect the industry: indie developers were more represented than AAA developers, and free-to-play prevalence varies geographically.

These options involve different product and audience expectations. A premium game typically sells access up front and may add paid content or cosmetics; a free-to-play game can use in-game purchases, passes, or other optional purchases. Survey frequency does not show which approach would be most profitable for a specific project.

How are indie games funded?

Among GDC’s surveyed studio workers and solo developers, 35% identified self-funding as their predominant funding source, while 20% named publishing deals or project-based funding. In the solo-developer subgroup, 86% of 36 respondents said self-funding was predominant; that small subgroup should not be treated as a precise estimate for solo developers generally.

Seeking a publisher can take work before a deal is even on the table. One anonymous GDC survey respondent, identified as a Director (Game Design) in Australia, said: “The competition is so fierce right now, so getting a really good demo is taking us a lot of time and money—but we need one before we go to publishers.” This describes one respondent’s experience, not a universal publisher requirement.

When weighing self-funding against outside funding, consider the project’s cash needs, the time and resources required to prepare a pitch or demo, and any obligations attached to a funding agreement. The survey figures describe which sources respondents relied on most; they do not tell developers what a deal’s terms should be or whether a particular route will suit their project.

What do platform trends tell a developer?

In GDC’s 2026 survey, 28% of surveyed developers said they were making or optimizing a game for Steam Deck, and 40% said they were interested in developing for it. These are developer activity and intention figures—not measurements of player demand, sales, or likely revenue for a particular game. Platform fit and discoverability are relevant to a business plan, but these survey responses cannot establish that targeting a device will make a game commercially viable.
