If Steam’s CAPTCHA will not load, keeps resetting, or is rejected after you solve it, first try the same Steam page in a current, regular browser instead of the Steam client. Then test a clean session with extensions and VPNs off, JavaScript enabled, and cookies allowed. A CAPTCHA error alone does not show that you answered incorrectly or that your account is banned.
Identify what is failing
The next step depends on whether Steam cannot display the challenge, rejects the challenge, or rejects something else in the form. Look for the exact message before changing settings.

A CAPTCHA token can expire or lose its session before the form is submitted. Multiple tabs or repeated submissions can also make it harder to tell whether the challenge, code, or form is the actual problem.

Try Steam in a regular browser first
The Steam desktop client’s embedded browser does not necessarily behave like your normal browser: its cookies, extensions, and page rendering environment can differ. If the CAPTCHA fails inside the client, open the relevant page directly in a regular browser:

Steam’s client sign-in troubleshooting treats client and browser access separately and notes that connectivity, interfering programs, maintenance, or local network and ISP problems can affect access. Steam users have also reported CAPTCHA failures in the client that did not occur in a regular browser; those are community reports, not a Valve diagnosis (Steam Community discussion).
Run a clean-browser test
- Close duplicate Steam tabs. Keep one page open for the task you are trying to complete.
- Open a private or incognito window and navigate to the Steam page directly. Some browsers apply stricter cookie rules in private windows, so if this test fails, try a fresh standard profile as well.
- Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers, script blockers, anti-tracking or anti-fingerprinting tools, cookie managers, VPN extensions, and antivirus or corporate filtering extensions. If the CAPTCHA works, turn extensions back on one by one to find the conflict. Steam recommends disabling browser add-ons when they interfere with sign-in (Steam browser sign-in help); Google likewise notes that conflicting plugins can disrupt reCAPTCHA (Google reCAPTCHA troubleshooting).
- Check JavaScript and cookies. Enable JavaScript, allow cookies and site data, and make sure the browser or privacy software is not deleting site data immediately. If cross-site cookies are blocked aggressively, temporarily relax that setting for the test. Settings labels and paths vary by browser and operating system.
- Reload once, solve one newly generated CAPTCHA, and submit once. Do not keep clicking a stale challenge or resubmitting the same form.
Google’s guidance says reCAPTCHA works with current supported browser environments, recommends enabling JavaScript and updating the browser, and advises disabling conflicting plugins. Steam also warns that restrictive privacy settings and programs that remove cookies can lead to repeated authentication problems (Steam Guard and authentication help).
Turn off VPNs, proxies, and filtering for the test
Temporarily disconnect from any VPN or proxy, including a browser extension. If you use secure DNS, antivirus web protection, or a network filter, check whether it is blocking scripts or requests needed by the page; temporarily disabling a filter can help isolate the cause. Restore protections after the test, using a narrow exception only if you can identify a specific conflict.

CAPTCHA systems may challenge or distrust traffic from shared, heavily used, or VPN exit addresses. An error does not prove that your IP has been blacklisted or that you did anything wrong. Steam Community users have associated failures with VPNs, extensions, and browser changes, but those reports are anecdotal rather than official confirmation of a cause (Steam Community discussion).

Try a different browser, device, or network
Use a current, unmodified version of Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox, or Safari where supported. Google’s reCAPTCHA guidance covers the latest two major versions of several desktop and mobile browsers; browser support can change, so update rather than relying on an old version. Steam also recommends testing another browser when a browser sign-in flow fails (Steam browser sign-in help).
If another browser on the same device works, the original browser profile or one of its settings is the likely variable. If the CAPTCHA fails in multiple browsers, test another device. Then try a different trusted connection, such as a phone hotspot, if available.
- Works on a hotspot, not your usual Wi-Fi: focus on the router, ISP, filtering, proxy, or shared IP reputation on the usual connection. A hotspot is a diagnostic, not proof of a particular network fault, and it may use carrier-grade NAT.
- Fails on several devices on one network: the network or its filtering is a more useful next area to investigate than reinstalling Steam.
- Fails across browsers, devices, and networks: a temporary Steam or CAPTCHA-provider issue, an account-specific restriction, or a wider verification problem becomes more plausible. Stop repeated attempts, wait, and retry later.
Steam notes that maintenance, Steam-side issues, local network conditions, and ISP problems can affect sign-in; it does not publish a universal CAPTCHA retry cooldown (Steam sign-in troubleshooting).

Cookies and site data help maintain the session between CAPTCHA completion and form submission. If a fresh browser window and different browser do not help, clear site data for Steam rather than immediately wiping all browser history and saved logins.

- Close the Steam page and client window you were using.
- In your browser’s privacy or site settings, find stored site data for Steam and remove it. The exact menu path depends on the browser.
- Reopen the browser, navigate to the official Steam page, and complete one new challenge.
Clearing cookies can sign you out of Steam and other sites. Steam warns that cookie-cleaning or system-cleaning programs can trigger repeated authentication issues (Steam authentication help). Avoid random “Steam CAPTCHA fix” downloads and browser cleaners.
Separate Steam Guard problems from CAPTCHA problems
If the CAPTCHA succeeds but Steam rejects a code, use the newest Steam Guard code. Steam says mobile authenticator codes change every 30 seconds, and older codes do not work. For email codes, check spam and allow for provider delays; Steam advises contacting support if a verification email has not arrived after three hours. Its guidance also suggests adding [email protected] and [email protected] to trusted senders (Steam Guard code and email help).
Request a fresh code when appropriate, close duplicate forms, and submit with the newest code once. A rejected Steam Guard code is not evidence that the CAPTCHA itself failed.

If Steam Support’s CAPTCHA blocks your ticket
Use the browser-based official Steam Support site, not the client’s embedded window. Try a clean private session, disable extensions and VPN or proxy services for the test, and use another trusted network. If the page still will not accept a request, wait and retry rather than repeatedly submitting the same form.

When you can submit a request, include details that help distinguish an account issue from a browser or network issue:
- The exact error text and a screenshot, with account details and other private information redacted.
- Date and time of the failed attempt, plus your browser and operating system.
- Whether you used the Steam client or a regular browser, and whether another browser, device, or network worked.
- Whether a VPN, proxy, privacy extension, or web filter was enabled.
Steam directs customers to its official support channels for customer service and technical help (Valve contact information). Do not trust search-result phone numbers, remote-access “support,” account-recovery vendors, or anyone asking for credentials or Steam Guard files.
Is Steam CAPTCHA down?
A CAPTCHA error by itself cannot establish a Steam-wide outage. If the same task fails across clean browsers, devices, and networks, a temporary Steam-side or verification-provider problem is possible, but the available information does not establish a global CAPTCHA outage. Steam’s sign-in guidance recognizes that maintenance and connectivity problems can interfere with access; wait and retry later rather than assuming the account is banned.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Open the Steam page directly in a current regular browser.
- Use a fresh session, with extensions disabled for the test.
- Confirm JavaScript and cookies/site data are allowed.
- Turn off VPNs and proxies temporarily.
- Complete one fresh CAPTCHA and submit the form once.
- Try a second browser or device, then a different network if needed.
- If every test fails, stop retrying, wait, and use official Steam Support.
