The “mysterious” Steam Controller 2 is no longer unreleased. A render discovered in SteamVR-related data in November 2024 showed an in-development Valve controller reportedly codenamed Ibex; Valve’s second-generation Steam Controller launched on May 4, 2026. The $99 U.S. product broadly preserves the render’s unusual combination of dual sticks, dual trackpads and rear controls, although the image never proved final specifications, price or release timing.
What the 2024 leak actually showed
The image was a data-mined render, not a photograph of a retail unit or a Valve announcement. Valve-focused reporting connected it with the internal name “Ibex” after references and images appeared in SteamVR-related data. Tom’s Hardware’s original report also distinguished the controller from separate “Roy” renders associated with Valve’s Deckard virtual-reality hardware.
A prototype render can document an intermediate design. It cannot, by itself, establish a battery capacity, wireless protocol, sensor type, dimensions, trigger behavior, haptics, software support or a launch date. Later leak coverage added context but remained unofficial; PCGamesN’s report is best read in that category.

- Two analog sticks.
- Two trackpads.
- A conventional face-button arrangement.
- Controls on the rear of the shell.
- A layout broadly influenced by the Steam Deck rather than the radically asymmetric 2015 Steam Controller.
Those observations describe what was visible or reported, not a complete specification sheet.

Why the render mattered
Valve discontinued the first Steam Controller in November 2019. Its trackpad-centered design offered mouse-like precision, gyro aiming and extensive Steam Input remapping, but it was less immediately familiar than an Xbox or PlayStation pad. A successor that combines two sticks with trackpads and rear inputs could make that flexibility easier to approach without abandoning it.
The timing also fit Valve’s hardware direction. Steam Deck introduced a large audience to Steam Input, while a standalone controller can extend that control model to desktop PCs, televisions, SteamOS systems and the broader Steam Machine ecosystem. That is an analysis of the design’s likely role, not a published Valve statement of strategy.

Leak versus shipping controller
The final product is called the Steam Controller, not Ibex. Valve’s official product material and images confirm that the broad concept survived, but the render should not be treated as a promise that every unseen component remained unchanged.

What happened after the leak
- November 26–27, 2024: Reports identified the Ibex render in SteamVR-related data.
- 2025 to early 2026: Further datamining and leak reports circulated, but did not replace official documentation.
- May 4, 2026: Valve released the second-generation Steam Controller.
- May 7–8, 2026: After launch demand overwhelmed immediately available stock, Valve announced and opened a reservation queue.
- June–August 2026: Valve continued using reservations and estimated fulfillment windows rather than promising universal immediate shipment.
Price, reservations and availability
The official U.S. listing shows $99. Valve’s reservation notice limited eligibility to one controller per user, required a Steam account in good standing and a Steam purchase made before April 27, 2026, and gave recipients 72 hours to complete a purchase after the order email.
Valve’s estimates varied by reservation position and availability: some orders were shown as due by September 2026, others by December 2026, and later reservations in 2027. Those are estimates, not guaranteed delivery dates. Availability also differs by region; Valve referred to the United States and Canada first, with the United Kingdom, European Union and Australia following in later weeks. Check the Steam Hardware group and the official community listing for current status instead of assuming that a displayed price means immediate shipment.

Who gets the most from it?
Steam Input users
The strongest case is for players who want gyro aiming, radial menus, mode shifts, touchpad mouse emulation, layered mappings or custom profiles. Steam Input can make games with weak native controller support more usable, although behavior varies by game, launcher, anti-cheat system and whether a title mixes mouse and controller input.

Steam Deck and couch-PC owners
Deck owners who like its broader input philosophy can carry that approach to a desktop or television. A first-party Valve controller also makes sense for a SteamOS or Steam Machine-style setup.

Players who want familiar sticks without giving up experimentation
The dual-stick layout is easier to recognize than the first Steam Controller’s arrangement, while trackpads and rear controls add options that ordinary console pads do not provide.
Who should skip it?
- Buyers who want an immediately available, plug-and-play Xbox-style controller.
- Players whose library already has excellent native controller support and who will not configure Steam Input.
- People who dislike trackpads, gyro or a more crowded grip.
- Users who mainly play non-Steam games and do not want to add them to Steam or use another remapping layer.
- Anyone unwilling to wait through a reservation queue.
- Buyers who require extensively documented third-party repairability or accessory support.

Valve has also released CAD files for the controller and its puck, which may encourage custom stands, mounts and other accessories. PC Gamer reports on those files. They do not make any particular dock, adapter or charging accessory mandatory.
Verdict
The Ibex render was unusually predictive: the sticks, trackpads, rear controls and overall direction all carried into Valve’s 2026 Steam Controller. Its real limitation was not accuracy but scope—the image never told readers the final price, launch date or supply situation. At $99, the shipping controller is compelling for Steam Input enthusiasts, Deck owners and couch-PC players who will use its extra inputs. It is a poor value for someone seeking a conventional pad today, especially while Valve’s reservation queue can push fulfillment into 2027.
