The “Can’t reach the Steam servers” message does not point to one specific fault. Your Deck may have Wi-Fi but no internet, internet access but a Steam-only problem, a stale connection after sleep, or a network that blocks Steam. Start by checking whether Steam is down, then compare the Deck on another network before changing settings or considering recovery.
Try first: Check Valve’s Steam connectivity guidance and test Steam Store or Community on another device. If those also time out, wait before troubleshooting the Deck. Otherwise, restart the Deck and router, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and test a phone hotspot if available.
What the error means
A Wi-Fi icon only confirms a connection to a wireless network; it does not prove that Steam’s services are reachable. A browser may work while Steam login, Store, downloads, cloud sync, or multiplayer do not. Conversely, Steam can work while one game’s own online service is down.
- No Wi-Fi or internet: The Deck cannot join the local network or reach the internet.
- Steam-only failure: General browsing works, but Steam authentication or another Steam service does not.
- Client stuck offline: The connection may be available, but Steam has not restored its session, often after sleep or a network change.
- Steam outage: Steam services fail from multiple devices or connections.
- Game-server failure: Steam works, but one game’s online service does not.
Use the tests below to isolate the cause before attempting OS recovery. The general Valve guidance applies to both LCD and OLED models; menu wording can vary by SteamOS release.

Check whether Steam is down
Check Valve’s Steam status page, then try Steam Store or Steam Community on a phone or computer. Also compare devices on the same Wi-Fi: if Steam fails everywhere on that connection, the router, ISP, or Steam itself is more likely than a Deck-specific setting. Valve says timeouts when accessing Steam sites can indicate a system-wide issue (Valve connectivity guidance).
If Steam sites fail across devices and connections, wait and check again instead of repeatedly changing Deck settings. This article does not report a live outage status.
Restart the Deck and reconnect
- In Game Mode, press the Steam button, choose Power, then Restart.
- After it restarts, open Steam > Settings > Internet, disconnect from Wi-Fi, then reconnect. If the network remains unreliable, forget it and add it again, if that option is available.
- Confirm that the Deck joined the intended network. If your router uses separate names for its bands, try the other one.
Valve recommends restarting and installing available updates as basic troubleshooting, and documents the Internet settings path in its Steam Deck troubleshooting guide. If the interface is frozen, holding the power button for about 10 seconds can force a shutdown; use this only as a recovery measure because unsaved data may be lost. Follow Valve’s current guide for model-specific power-button behavior.

Restart the modem/router according to its manufacturer’s instructions, wait until the connection is fully back, and reconnect the Deck. This may clear a temporary routing, DHCP, or wireless problem; it will not resolve a Steam outage or an ISP restriction.
Try both Wi-Fi bands
If available, test 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band can reach farther and work through obstacles more reliably; 5 GHz may be less congested and faster nearby. Neither is automatically better. Walls, distance, interference, and router settings matter. Valve recommends trying both bands (connectivity guidance). If your router combines bands under one network name, it may steer the Deck automatically; separating names temporarily can help identify a band issue, but use the router maker’s instructions.

Use a phone hotspot as an isolation test
Connect the Deck to a phone hotspot and try Steam. If Steam works there but not on home Wi-Fi, focus on the home router, DNS, filtering, ISP, or local wireless conditions. If it fails on both, a Steam outage, Deck software, account session, or another issue remains possible. Hotspots are not definitive: carrier filtering, NAT, or data limits can affect results.
Read the result
- Works on hotspot, not home Wi-Fi: Inspect the home network and its settings.
- Works on Ethernet, not Wi-Fi: Investigate wireless interference, band, router compatibility, or coverage.
- Fails on multiple networks while other devices work: Continue with updates, time, client, and software checks.
Install SteamOS updates
Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install available updates, restart, and test again. Valve includes system updates among its basic troubleshooting steps (Steam Deck troubleshooting guide).

Valve released SteamOS 3.8.14 on July 3, 2026; its release notes describe a Wi-Fi speed issue on certain routers advertising incorrect MCS requirements. That is relevant only to affected router behavior, not a general fix for Steam-server errors. Check the Steam Deck release notes for current availability and channel before relying on a version number. Do not switch to a beta channel just to address a generic connection error.
Check the system clock
An incorrect date or time can interfere with secure connections and authentication. In Desktop Mode, open the desktop’s Date & Time settings, enable automatic synchronization if possible, and verify the time zone. Then return to Game Mode and test Steam. Controls can change between releases; Valve’s SteamOS troubleshooting information covers date/time troubleshooting. Automatic synchronization needs a working connection, so try another network or correct the clock manually if synchronization cannot complete. Treat this as a cause only if the clock is actually wrong.
Undo custom network settings
If you or a network administrator changed DNS or filtering, temporarily restore the previous/default configuration and test again. Valve recommends reverting custom DNS settings as a troubleshooting step; it does not promise that switching to a particular public DNS provider will fix the problem (Valve connectivity guidance).

- Record current settings so you can restore them.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy.
- Revert custom router DNS to automatic/default settings.
- Temporarily disable network-wide filtering, parental controls, or ad blocking if you control them.
- Retest after each change rather than changing several things at once.
Also consider Desktop Mode firewall or VPN software, modified hosts files, and third-party network utilities. Do not leave protections disabled after testing unless you understand the consequences.

Handle captive portals and restricted networks
Hotels, airports, libraries, schools, and workplaces may show Wi-Fi as connected before granting internet access. They may require accepting terms or signing in through a browser. Try completing the portal in Desktop Mode with a browser, then return to Game Mode. Do not enter Steam credentials into an unfamiliar portal or third-party page.
Some university or business networks and proxies block ports Steam needs. Valve notes these restrictions and says Steam’s required ports cannot be remapped to HTTP or changed to a custom range (Valve connectivity guidance). Ask the network administrator whether Steam is permitted rather than trying to bypass workplace or school controls. For current requirements, see Valve’s Required Ports page.
Test wired Ethernet
If you have a compatible USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter or dock, connect the Deck directly to the router and test Steam. Valve recommends a wired test where possible and notes that additional USB-C Ethernet hardware may be needed (connectivity guidance).
- Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not: Focus on wireless coverage, interference, band selection, router configuration, or compatibility.
- Ethernet and Wi-Fi both fail: Check Steam status, DNS/filtering, time, client state, and SteamOS.
Ethernet is an optional diagnostic, not a required purchase or guaranteed repair.

If the error appears after sleep
If Steam disconnects only after waking the Deck, restart it, install available stable updates, and note whether switching networks restores the session. Track whether it happens after every sleep, only after a long sleep, or after moving between a hotspot and home Wi-Fi. Historical community discussion of a beta update reported a fix for a resume-related server error, but that report does not establish that the same bug affects current stable SteamOS (historical beta-update discussion).
Test without third-party modifications
Temporarily disable Decky Loader plugins, custom themes, performance utilities, network tools, overlays, or Desktop Mode VPN/firewall software, then retest. Valve’s basic guide recommends exiting or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode while troubleshooting (Steam Deck troubleshooting guide). This is an isolation test, not a reason to permanently remove software that is not involved.
Use Offline Mode only if it was prepared
Offline Mode is a fallback for compatible games, not a way to restore online service. It is useful only if Steam has stored credentials and the games are ready for offline use. Before travel, while online, update the client and games, launch each intended game at least once where required, enable Offline Mode, and exit Steam normally.
Offline Mode disables features that need a connection; multiplayer, updates, Store access, and cloud sync will be unavailable. Games requiring a live connection or an external launcher may not work. If Steam requests a fresh login and credentials were not saved, Offline Mode may not get you past that screen. See Valve’s Offline Mode guidance.

Optional Desktop Mode diagnostics
Advanced users can open a terminal in Desktop Mode and check network addressing and name resolution. These commands inspect the connection; they do not repair it.

- No default route points toward a local network or router issue.
- An IP ping that works while hostname lookup fails suggests DNS trouble.
- If DNS resolves but Steam remains unavailable, consider an outage, firewall/proxy, blocked ports, client session, or a Steam-specific service problem.
A failed ping alone does not prove Steam is down: networks may block ping traffic.
When to consider rollback or recovery
Recovery is for broader OS problems, not a temporary server error. Consider it only if the problem began after an update, SteamOS repeatedly fails to update, Game Mode or Steam will not start, or connectivity fails across multiple known-good networks alongside other system problems.
Valve’s recovery options include rollback, factory reset, erasing user data, and reinstalling or re-imaging SteamOS. The reinstall option may need an active internet connection; rollback is an option when a recent OS change is suspected. Follow Valve’s current Steam Deck recovery instructions. For rollback, Valve’s instructions say to power down, hold the … button while pressing power, keep holding it until the SteamOS boot menu appears, then select the previous SteamOS version.
Back up important files in Desktop Mode first when possible. Factory reset and re-imaging can erase local games, saves, settings, and user data. Do not assume every save has synchronized to the cloud. Do not reset solely because Steam is temporarily offline.
When to contact Steam Support
Contact Steam Support if the Deck fails on multiple known-good networks while Steam works on other devices, if updates or Game Mode show broader failures, or before attempting recovery when you are unsure about data loss. If the problem is limited to a school, workplace, hotel, or ISP network, contact that network’s administrator or provider instead.
