Yes—Steam Deck can now finish active downloads with its display off. Valve calls the feature Display-Off Downloads: the Deck stays active in a low-power state while downloads run, then enters ordinary sleep when they finish. It is not downloads continuing during full sleep.
The feature is available in the Stable channel. It is enabled by default while the Deck is plugged in; to use it on battery, enable the option under Settings > Power. On battery, the Deck enters full sleep if its charge falls below 20%.
What Display-Off Downloads actually does
Ordinary sleep suspends the Deck, so downloads stop. Display-Off Downloads is different: the screen turns off, while SteamOS remains active enough to process the current download queue. When that work is complete, the Deck goes to sleep.
That makes “downloads while asleep” an easy shorthand, but not a precise description. The Deck is not in its usual suspended state during the download, and Valve does not describe this as a general background mode for Desktop Mode apps or other processes.

How to start a screen-off download
- Start or resume a download on the Deck.
- Press the Deck’s physical Power button while the download is active.
- If prompted, choose Continue to keep downloading with the display off.
- Leave the Deck to finish the active downloads; it should go to sleep afterward.
Valve’s December Stable update also added a prompt that may appear when you choose Sleep from the Power menu while Display-Off Downloads is appropriate. The wording or prompt you see can depend on the software version and situation.
If you press a button or move the Deck while downloads are running, a status screen can show their progress. From there, you can fully wake the Deck or let downloads continue with the display off.
Using it on battery
Plugged in, Display-Off Downloads is enabled by default. For battery use, open Settings > Power and enable the Display-Off Downloads battery option. Valve says the Deck automatically enters full sleep if battery charge falls below 20%.

Battery use is therefore best for a shorter download when you have plenty of charge left. A large game may involve Wi-Fi, storage activity, and installation or decompression work; the feature does not guarantee that a particular download will finish before the battery reaches the threshold. Valve has not published a battery-life estimate or power-draw figure for this mode.
When it became available
Valve introduced Display-Off Downloads to the Beta and Preview channels on November 4, 2025, then shipped it to the Stable channel in a Steam Deck Client update on November 17, 2025. A later Stable update on December 19, 2025 added the Sleep-menu prompt; Valve re-released that update on December 23 with additional changes. When it is useful—and what it does not guarantee
It is most useful when you want a game or update ready without leaving the display illuminated—especially for a download at home while the Deck is connected to power. It works as a software feature for Steam Deck generally; Valve’s announcement does not limit it to LCD or OLED models. The screen being off avoids unnecessary screen-on time, but Valve does not quantify any OLED lifespan or burn-in benefit.

The mode handles active download work, then sleeps. Do not rely on it to fetch future updates after the queue finishes, wake remotely, or keep unrelated apps running. Nor does it protect a download from Wi-Fi loss, lack of storage space, or other installation problems.

Storage type is a separate consideration. Steam Deck supports microSD expansion, but Valve does not specify different Display-Off Downloads behavior or completion times for internal SSD and microSD storage. A nearly full or problematic card can still affect an installation; the power mode does not resolve storage issues.

The Deck sleeps immediately instead of offering Continue
First check that a download is visibly active in Downloads. If it is, connect the Deck to power and try the physical Power button again. Make sure Steam Deck software is up to date through Settings > System. If no prompt appears, the feature may not be available in the current client situation, the prompt may have been dismissed, or the Deck may be taking an ordinary sleep action. Restarting Steam and the Deck, then retrying with an active download, is a reasonable next step.

The download seems to stop
Wake the Deck and check the download status, Wi-Fi connection, available storage, and whether the title is still installing or decompressing. Also verify that the Deck entered Display-Off Downloads rather than ordinary sleep. The feature changes power behavior; it cannot guarantee uninterrupted networking or storage operation.
A controller or dock does not trigger it
Some users have reported inconsistent activation when initiating sleep from an external controller. These are anecdotal reports, not a Valve-confirmed limitation. If it does not trigger, use the Deck’s physical Power button while a download is active.

“Low power” does not mean zero power: the Deck is still doing download and possibly installation work. Keep its vents unobstructed, use the supplied charger or a compatible USB-C power source, and do not leave it running inside a closed case. Valve has not published thermal measurements for the feature.
Should you use it?
For an overnight download while plugged in, Display-Off Downloads is the straightforward choice: start the download, choose Continue when prompted, and let the Deck sleep when the work is done. On battery, enable the option only when the remaining charge is ample and you can accept that downloads may stop when the Deck reaches 20%. You do not need a dock or a new Steam Deck to use the feature.
