Choose the Steam Deck OLED for its OLED screen, SteamOS interface, trackpads, advertised quick suspend/resume and lower published weight. Choose the ROG Ally X if you prefer Windows 11, a higher-resolution, higher-refresh display with VRR, more listed memory, an 80Wh battery and USB4 connectivity. Neither is the universal winner: check your games and current local prices before buying.

Which screen is better for your games?
Steam Deck OLED: prioritize panel type and size
The Deck OLED has the larger listed panel at 7.4 inches, and it uses HDR OLED technology. It runs at 1280 × 800 with a refresh rate up to 90Hz. That combination makes it the fit to consider if OLED is your first screen priority; it does not have the Ally X’s stated resolution or refresh ceiling.
ROG Ally X: prioritize resolution, refresh rate and VRR
The Ally X’s 7-inch IPS-level display is 1920 × 1080, supports 120Hz and includes FreeSync Premium VRR. It offers more pixels and a higher stated refresh ceiling than the Deck OLED. Those specifications do not establish which screen will look or feel better to you: OLED, resolution, refresh rate and variable refresh rate are different qualities.

Does the Ally X have better gaming performance?
On paper, the Ally X has the higher listed CPU and GPU specifications: a Zen 4 eight-core/16-thread Ryzen Z1 Extreme and RDNA 3 graphics with 12 compute units, compared with the Deck OLED’s Zen 2 four-core/eight-thread APU and RDNA 2 graphics with 8 compute units. It also lists 24GB of memory versus the Deck’s 16GB.
These specifications alone cannot tell you the frame-rate difference in a particular game. A fair performance comparison would need the same title, resolution, graphics settings, power profile and software versions. No such matched benchmark is established here, so treat component specifications as a buying consideration, not a promise that the Ally X runs every game faster.

How do SteamOS and Windows 11 affect game compatibility?
Steam Deck OLED: SteamOS 3
The Deck runs SteamOS 3, an Arch-based operating system. Valve advertises suspend and resume: pressing the power button suspends a game, and pressing it again wakes the Deck where you left off. That is a stated product behavior, not a guarantee about every game or situation.
ROG Ally X: Windows 11 Home
The Ally X runs Windows 11 Home, making Windows the defining software distinction between these devices. If your decision depends on a particular game, launcher, anti-cheat system, mod workflow or subscription, check current support for that exact use case before choosing. Do not assume Windows guarantees that every title works, or that SteamOS is limited to Steam, without verifying the game and service involved.

What about Game Pass and Steam games?
For Game Pass, Steam games or another service, the answer depends on the specific title and how you access it. Confirm current compatibility for the games and launchers you actually use rather than buying on the operating-system label alone.
Battery capacity is not the same as play time
The Deck OLED has a published 50Wh battery, and Valve lists 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on content. ASUS lists an 80Wh battery for the Ally X but does not provide a directly comparable runtime on the cited specifications page. Capacity alone cannot establish which handheld lasts longer during your games; the available manufacturer figures do not provide a matched runtime test.

Controls, weight and expansion
Trackpads and input
The Deck OLED includes two 32.5mm trackpads, which may be useful for mouse-like input or configurable menus, alongside four assignable grip buttons and gyro. ASUS lists two assignable grip buttons and gyro for the Ally X but no trackpads. This is a functional difference, not a verdict about which layout will be more comfortable.
Weight and storage
Valve lists the Deck OLED at approximately 640g, while ASUS lists the Ally X at 678g. That is about a 38g difference by the published figures; weight by itself does not establish ergonomic comfort. The Deck is listed in 512GB and 1TB NVMe configurations with UHS-I microSD. ASUS lists the Ally X with a 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 drive and UHS-II microSD. Confirm the exact model and regional configuration when comparing storage or expansion.
