Steam Deck vs AYANEO 2: Which Handheld Is Right for You?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Steam-first players, the Steam Deck OLED is the better handheld to own; a discounted Steam Deck LCD is the value pick. The original AYANEO 2 makes sense if you need Windows-native games or apps, want its sharper 1,920 × 1,200 screen, or find one at a substantial used-market discount. It can deliver higher peak performance when given more power, but its Windows setup and age-related ownership risks are part of the price.

This is a comparison between Valve’s LCD and OLED Deck models and the original AYANEO 2, a 2022-era Windows handheld—not AYANEO’s newer models. Current price and availability vary by region and seller, so check the Steam Deck store page and the condition and warranty of any AYANEO 2 listing before buying.

Steam Deck vs AYANEO 2 at a glance

The biggest difference is not a spec-sheet number: the Deck runs SteamOS and is built around Steam, while the AYANEO 2 runs Windows. That changes game compatibility, setup, updates, battery management, and day-to-day use.

Which is faster for games?

The AYANEO 2 has more performance headroom than the original Steam Deck when it can run at higher power limits. That does not mean it will always deliver a proportionally higher frame rate: the result depends on the game, resolution, graphics settings, power limit, cooling, drivers, and whether the handheld is plugged in.

Compare at the same resolution

The AYANEO 2’s native 1,920 × 1,200 resolution is much more demanding than the Deck’s 1,280 × 800. For a fair performance comparison, use a common resolution such as 1,280 × 800 or 1,280 × 720, then consider each device’s native display separately. On the AYANEO 2, lowering resolution can improve frame rate and battery life; native resolution is more useful for lighter games, desktop text, and workloads where sharpness matters more than speed.

What older benchmarks can—and cannot—tell you

In testing published in January 2023, Engadget found the AYANEO 2 about 25–40% faster than the original Steam Deck depending on the game. At 800p, its reported results included 54fps versus 40fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and roughly 55fps versus 48fps in Elden Ring. Those are results from that review’s test setup, not guaranteed results for current software or every unit. See Engadget’s historical AYANEO 2 testing.

Match expectations to the game

  • Indies and 2D games: Both devices are more than capable for many titles; controls, battery use, and comfort usually matter more than peak performance.
  • Older AAA games: The AYANEO 2’s extra power can help, particularly at a shared lower resolution or while plugged in.
  • Demanding newer games: Neither device promises high settings and 60fps across the board. Plan for trade-offs in resolution, image quality, upscaling, and frame rate.
  • Strategy and management games: The Deck’s trackpads can make cursor-heavy play and menus easier even when its benchmark result is lower.
  • Competitive multiplayer: Check the game’s anti-cheat and operating-system requirements before prioritizing raw performance.
  • Emulation: The AYANEO 2’s Windows flexibility and the Deck’s large guide community are different advantages; compatibility and setup vary by emulator and game. Use games and software you are entitled to use.

Screen, controls, and comfort

Resolution versus OLED contrast

The AYANEO 2’s 7-inch 1,920 × 1,200 LCD has the highest resolution of these options, which can help with desktop text and lighter games. The Deck LCD is 7 inches at 1,280 × 800. The Deck OLED is larger at 7.4 inches and offers OLED contrast and deeper blacks, which are especially noticeable in dark scenes. The AYANEO 2 is the sharper-resolution choice; the Deck OLED is the contrast-focused choice. Neither distinction alone makes one screen best for every use.

Controls for different kinds of games

The Steam Deck has two trackpads, rear buttons, gyro, and deep Steam Input integration. Trackpads are particularly valuable for mouse-oriented games, desktop navigation, and menus that are awkward with sticks. AYANEO equips the AYANEO 2 with Hall-effect sticks and linear triggers, plus gyro and shortcut controls. Hall-effect sensing may reduce one common source of stick wear, but it does not make a control immune to mechanical or electronic failure.

Size and handling

AYANEO lists the AYANEO 2 at about 680g and its chassis is more compact than the Deck’s. Some players will prefer its smaller body and asymmetrical stick layout; others may find the Deck’s larger grips and trackpads more comfortable. Hand size, grip, and the weight you can comfortably hold matter more than a general claim that one is ergonomic.

SteamOS or Windows: which fits your library?

SteamOS is the easier fit for Steam-first play

SteamOS presents a controller-first interface, Steam library integration, compatibility information, and accessible performance controls. It also includes a desktop mode for applications outside the standard gaming interface. Valve’s compatibility documentation explains its testing categories and Proton, the compatibility layer used to run many Windows games on Linux.

A Verified or Playable badge is useful guidance, not a promise of a flawless experience on every update. Valve notes that Proton remains a work in progress; launchers, anti-cheat, performance, controller input, and readable text can still cause problems. Check the specific games you care about rather than assuming every Steam title works equally well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SteamOS is also the more natural option if you want to install a Steam game, pick it up later, and generally interact with the handheld like a console. Offline play is possible for installed games when the game itself does not require an internet connection, according to Valve’s FAQ.

Windows gives the AYANEO 2 broader native PC support

Windows is the straightforward choice for PC Game Pass and many non-Steam launchers, including Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, and EA app. It can also avoid some Linux/Proton anti-cheat limitations and is familiar for Windows utilities and peripherals. That removes some operating-system barriers, not every game-specific problem: controller support, drivers, launcher behavior, and handheld usability can still be frustrating.

Windows is designed primarily for PCs, not a small controller-only screen. Updates, pop-ups, touch navigation, launchers, drivers, and overlays can interrupt play. AYANEO’s control software is part of the experience for tuning power and device settings. Engadget’s 2023 review described Windows 11 touch friction and shortcomings in AyaSpace during its testing; that is historical evidence, not proof that every later software version behaves the same way.

Battery life and power use

The AYANEO 2 has a 50.25Wh battery. The Steam Deck LCD is approximately 40Wh, while the OLED model is approximately 50Wh. Capacity alone does not predict play time: the game, power limit, frame-rate cap, screen brightness and refresh behavior, wireless use, and—especially for a used AYANEO 2—battery health all affect runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In its January 2023 review, Engadget reported roughly two to three hours on the AYANEO 2 and three to four hours on the original Steam Deck, depending on the title. Those historical observations are not a current runtime guarantee or a controlled comparison of every power profile. The practical trade-off remains: pushing the AYANEO 2 harder can produce higher frame rates while drawing more power; low-power games and settings are more suitable for longer untethered sessions. The OLED Deck combines a larger battery than the original LCD Deck with platform refinements, making it the more appealing Deck for portable endurance.

Storage, ports, docks, and upgrades

Internal storage and microSD

The AYANEO 2 was offered in configurations up to 2TB, and some versions have 32GB of memory. More RAM can help particular games, emulation, and multitasking, but it does not guarantee higher frame rates, and it is not a routine user upgrade. The Deck’s internal SSD varies by model and can be replaced with careful disassembly; microSD is a simpler expansion route on either device.

Valve says Steam Deck formats microSD cards as ext4 with casefolding. A card formatted for another operating system is not automatically interchangeable without reformatting, so back up its contents before switching platforms. A larger internal drive is not automatically better value than adding a reputable card: compare the full device price, warranty, storage needs, and upgrade effort.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

USB-C and external displays

The AYANEO 2 has three USB-C ports, including two USB4 ports, which can make it easier to connect accessories while charging without a hub. It also lists Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, a headphone jack, microSD/TF expansion, and external-GPU support. Check the specific port, firmware, cable, dock, and display setup rather than assuming every USB-C port supports the same charging or video behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Deck uses a single USB-C port for charging, displays, and accessories, so a hub or dock is useful for a desk setup. Valve says docking is functionally similar to connecting a USB-C hub and does not increase gaming performance. A dock can add convenient connections; it does not turn the Deck into a faster GPU.

Long-term ownership and buying a used AYANEO 2

The Deck has the more established repair and community ecosystem. Valve points owners to iFixit for replacement parts and repair guides in its FAQ, and there is extensive user documentation. Repairs still require care, but parts and guides are easier to plan around than for a less widely supported older handheld.

The original AYANEO 2 is now most relevant as a discounted, refurbished, or used purchase. AYANEO’s product page confirms its specifications but does not show that every old configuration is in stock or supported in every region. Warranty coverage and return terms depend on country, seller, and purchase channel; verify them before paying. AYANEO’s product lineup has since advanced to newer hardware, including the AYANEO 3, so compare any premium-priced used AYANEO 2 with newer Windows handhelds before committing.

Used-unit inspection checklist

  • Ask for battery-health information and test whether the unit charges normally and holds charge.
  • Test both sticks, triggers, buttons, touchscreen, speakers, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and sleep/wake behavior.
  • Inspect every USB-C port and confirm the display output and charging behavior you need.
  • Check for screen damage, loose controls, unusual fan noise, and signs of impact or liquid exposure.
  • Confirm the SSD capacity, Windows installation state, included charger and accessories, return window, and warranty in writing.
  • Make sure the asking price reflects age, battery wear, support uncertainty, and the cost of any missing accessories or repairs.

Which one should you buy?

Your priority Better fit Reason
First handheld PC, mostly Steam games Steam Deck OLED SteamOS is the more console-like experience, with integrated library and strong community guidance.
Lowest-cost SteamOS entry Discounted or refurbished Steam Deck LCD It keeps the same broad platform advantages while avoiding a premium for OLED.
PC Game Pass or Windows-only software AYANEO 2 Windows supports those PC installations natively; buy only at a price that reflects its age.
Highest peak performance between these devices AYANEO 2 Its Ryzen 7 6800U has more headroom at higher power limits, particularly when plugged in.
Best handheld viewing in dark games Steam Deck OLED OLED contrast and black levels matter more here than the AYANEO 2’s higher resolution.
Sharpest display and Windows desktop text AYANEO 2 Its 1,920 × 1,200 LCD has more pixels than either Deck screen.
Strategy games and cursor-heavy controls Steam Deck Dual trackpads offer a useful input option the AYANEO 2 lacks.
Repair guidance and parts access Steam Deck Valve’s iFixit relationship and larger support community make ownership easier to service.
Several directly connected USB-C peripherals AYANEO 2 Its three ports can reduce the need for a hub in some setups.

If the AYANEO 2 costs nearly as much as a newer Windows handheld, its older design is difficult to justify unless its particular size, ports, screen, or configuration is essential. For Windows compatibility, compare current alternatives as well as the Steam Deck; for Steam-first play, the Deck OLED or a meaningfully cheaper LCD model is the safer fit.
