Steam appears to be operating normally in the latest available status snapshots, but that does not rule out a regional connection problem or an issue affecting a particular Steam feature, account, or game. Check Steam’s service indicators and reports for your country first; if they look normal, use the symptom-specific steps below rather than reinstalling Steam.

How to check whether Steam is down right now
Compare more than one signal. SteamStat.us tracks components including the Store, Community, Web API, Connection Managers, regional endpoints, and game APIs. It is unofficial and unaffiliated with Valve. Downdetector shows user reports by country; a spike can point to trouble, but reports alone do not prove a complete outage. A separate status monitor, SteamStatus.app, also aggregates service indicators rather than providing an official Valve status.

A page loading in a browser while the client fails—or the reverse—can help narrow the problem, but does not by itself identify the cause. A normal global indicator cannot rule out ISP routing, DNS, regional service, or account-specific problems.

What is failing? Match the symptom to the likely cause

Steam is online, but one game is not
Steam can be functioning while a title’s matchmaking, login, inventory, or multiplayer API is unavailable. The game may depend on its publisher’s servers, an external launcher, anti-cheat software, or another platform service. Check the game publisher’s official status page and channels before treating a single-game failure as a Steam outage. Do not infer a cause such as a DDoS attack, cloud-provider failure, or maintenance unless Valve or another responsible operator confirms it.
What to do if Steam status looks normal
- Exit and reopen Steam. Exit the client completely; on Windows, check Task Manager to confirm it has stopped before reopening. If Steam is in the middle of an update, let it finish rather than deleting files. Steam recommends restarting for certain “game currently unavailable” errors: Steam troubleshooting guidance.
- Test your connection. Open another website, then compare Steam on another device using the same network. If possible, try wired internet or a phone hotspot as a diagnostic. Restarting a router may help identify or clear a local connection problem, but it is not a guaranteed Steam fix. Steam lists local network configuration, ISP issues, firewall interference, other programs, and maintenance among possible sign-in factors: Steam sign-in troubleshooting.
- Temporarily test VPN or security filtering. If you use a VPN, proxy, or traffic-filtering tool, briefly test without it. Confirm Steam is permitted by your operating system firewall and check whether security software recently changed. If you temporarily disable a firewall for diagnosis, turn it back on immediately. Steam notes that client or game updates can require firewall permissions to be authorized again: Steam firewall guidance.
- For download trouble, change the download region. In the client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads. Under Download Region, select the nearest region; if it is already selected, test the next-closest one and retry. This targets regional content-server problems, not login failures or a global outage. - Clear the download cache if downloads remain stuck. Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose Clear Download Cache, and confirm. You will need to sign in again; installed games are not removed. Steam’s instructions are at Clear Download Cache.
- If just one game is affected, verify its files. In the game’s Steam library properties, use Verify Integrity of Game Files, then retry. Check any required launcher or game service separately. Changing DNS is not a universal fix. Consider it only as a later diagnostic if the symptoms point to name-resolution or ISP problems; avoid changing several network settings at once, since that makes it harder to identify what helped.

Can you play in Steam Offline Mode?
Offline Mode is most useful when you prepare it before losing connectivity. Steam’s official setup sequence is:
- Start Steam while online and ensure the game is fully updated.
- Launch the game once online to confirm it works.
- In Steam > Settings > Security, make sure “Don’t save account credentials on this computer” is not selected.
- From the Steam menu, choose Go Offline.
Offline Mode cannot bypass a login prompt if Steam requires authentication. Games that need an active connection or an external launcher may not work, and neither Steam nor its games receive updates while offline. Steam Deck
A Steam-wide incident can affect the Deck’s online features, while a game prepared for offline use may still work subject to its connection requirements. A game-specific server failure can also disrupt Deck multiplayer even when Steam itself is available. Switching to Desktop Mode or reinstalling SteamOS will not fix a Valve-side service outage.

Waiting is usually more useful than changing local settings when multiple independent indicators show a broad issue, several Steam services are affected, and the same failure appears across devices or networks. A report spike is not proof that every user is affected, and status pages can disagree. Steam outages may recover without a public explanation or timetable, so do not rely on an ETA unless Valve publishes one.

- Contact Steam Support for persistent account, purchase, or client problems after service indicators have recovered. Being logged out during a suspected outage is not, by itself, evidence that your account was compromised; use Steam’s account-recovery process if there are specific signs of unauthorized access.
- Contact your ISP if Steam consistently fails on one internet connection but works through a hotspot or another network.
- Contact the game publisher if Steam works but one title’s login, multiplayer, or online features do not.
