Steam’s Windows cutoff is already in effect: Valve ended support for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 on January 1, 2024. A Steam client update on November 5, 2024 made the break more concrete for older Windows installs. That update also excluded macOS 10.13 High Sierra and macOS 10.14 Mojave, according to contemporary reporting. This was not an instant deletion of games or purchases: an old client may keep working for a while, but Valve provides no guarantee, updates or technical support.
Which systems lost Steam support, and when?
| System | Cutoff and evidence | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 | Valve ended official support on January 1, 2024. Its November 5, 2024 client update would not run on Windows 7 or Windows 8, and legacy users did not automatically receive that client. | The installed client might continue to operate, but receives no Steam client updates or security fixes and is not guaranteed to keep working. |
| macOS 10.13 High Sierra and macOS 10.14 Mojave | Contemporary reporting said the November 5, 2024 client update also stopped applying to these versions. | The report identified macOS 10.15 Catalina as the then-minimum version. That 2024 figure does not establish Steam’s current minimum in 2026. |
Valve’s Windows support notice names Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 and sets January 1, 2024 as the end of support. The November 5, 2024 Steam client update describes the practical Windows client change. The macOS detail comes from TechSpot’s November 13, 2024 report; check Steam’s current system requirements before relying on any specific macOS minimum.
What “support ended” does—and does not—mean
Valve’s policy is about support for the Steam client on those operating systems, not an automatic revocation of game licenses. Valve says existing installations may continue working for some time, but it gives no end date or promise. The distinction matters: an old client that launches today can still lose access to features or services later.
- No client updates: unsupported systems no longer receive Steam client updates, including security updates.
- No guaranteed service: Valve does not guarantee continued functionality or provide technical support for problems related to these operating systems.
- No promise that every game works: a game already installed may run if its own requirements and Steam dependencies are met. Individual games can require a newer OS, drivers, runtimes or online services.
- No instant disappearance of purchases: the policy does not say that games are removed from accounts. However, access to downloads, authentication, cloud saves or other client features is not assured on an unsupported installation.
Steam is therefore not necessarily “blocked” the moment a system reaches the cutoff. But a client that still opens is not a dependable long-term way to use a library.

Why Valve dropped the older Windows versions
Valve says core Steam features rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome that no longer works on Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Future Steam client versions also depend on Windows features and security updates available only in Windows 10 and later, according to Valve’s explanation.
There is a wider security issue too: unsupported operating systems do not receive ordinary security fixes from their vendors. Valve’s notice cites the end of Windows 7 security support in January 2020 and Windows 8.1 support in January 2023. Windows 8.1 is the relevant consumer endpoint; Windows 8 should not be treated as if it had a separate, later support lifecycle.

What may still work—and what can fail
Steam client access, game compatibility and a game’s online services are separate dependencies. A game executable can remain compatible with old hardware while the launcher or a connected service becomes the obstacle.
- The client opens but the store does not: Steam’s embedded web components can fail independently of the basic launcher.
- Installed games launch, but downloads do not: an outdated client may no longer handle current delivery or authentication requirements.
- A game works offline but not online: multiplayer servers, anti-cheat, third-party launchers or account services may require newer software.
- Cloud saves stop syncing: local saves may remain on the computer, but do not assume Steam Cloud will remain accessible. Back up saves manually.
- A game fails after an OS upgrade: older DRM, 16-bit installers, obsolete codecs or unsupported drivers can cause problems even when the new operating system itself supports Steam.
These are possible failure modes, not a claim that every unsupported installation will encounter each one. The outcome depends on the client, game and services involved.

What affected players should do
- Confirm the exact OS and device. On Windows, identify whether the PC runs Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 and check whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit. On a Mac, confirm the macOS version and model; upgrade eligibility varies by Mac.
- Back up personal files and game saves. Copy local saves before changing operating systems or hardware. Do not treat Steam Cloud as the only copy while using an unsupported client.
- Check compatibility before upgrading. Confirm the PC meets the requirements of a currently supported Windows release and that drivers exist for its hardware. Windows 11 has stricter hardware requirements than Windows 10. An older Mac may not support a sufficiently recent macOS, and forced upgrades can create driver or performance problems.
- Choose a supported path. Upgrade a compatible computer, replace hardware that cannot run a supported OS reliably, or consider Linux or cloud gaming if they suit your games and connection.
- Treat the old client only as a temporary bridge. If it still works while you prepare a move, do not depend on it for long-term access, security or backups.
Choosing an alternative
| Option | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade the existing PC to a supported Windows version | The machine meets the OS requirements and has suitable drivers. | Older hardware can fail Windows 11 eligibility checks or run poorly after an upgrade. Windows 10 should not be treated as a durable default in 2026: its ordinary support endpoint was October 14, 2025, though the applicable status can depend on edition and support arrangements. |
| Buy a newer or refurbished PC | The existing computer cannot run a supported OS reliably, or its graphics hardware is too limited for the games you want. | Hardware costs money, and old games may still need compatibility settings or community fixes on a modern system. |
| Switch to Linux | You are comfortable troubleshooting and your games work through native Linux support or Proton. | Anti-cheat, launchers, mods, peripherals and Windows-only tools can be decisive blockers. Linux does not guarantee compatibility with a whole Steam library. |
| Use cloud gaming | Local hardware is weak, but you have a stable connection and the service supports your games and region. | Latency, image quality, data limits and availability matter. A service may require a membership or separate game access and will not reproduce every Steam feature. |
For a Mac that cannot move beyond High Sierra or Mojave, first check whether that exact model supports a newer macOS. If it does not, a newer Mac, compatible PC platform or cloud service may be more practical than relying on an unsupported client.

Possibly, for an unspecified time—but that is a stopgap, not a supported workaround. An unpatched operating system and client leave both security exposure and account-access uncertainty. Do not rely on unofficial client workarounds or unsupported OS patches as a substitute for a supported setup.
